Saturday, May 8th, 2010

(click logo for their Facebook page)

Friday, June 25, 2010 at 6:00pm – Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 3:00pm

Location:
Peter Hallman Ballyard – Kitchener, ON

The 7th Annual Legends of Fastball Classic will move to a new date in 2010 and tournament organizers are hoping to expand with a new junior division as well. Legends has traditionally been held the weekend after Memorial Day but declining major level teams and late start up ofremaining teams has made it difficult to fill the schedule the last coupleyears. After much consideration the Legends weekend will move to June 25, 26 and 27, 2010 with the hope that conflicts in previous years can now be avoided. Peter Hallman Ball Yard in Kitchener will again be the host venue for this event.

The format will remain the same with 10 teams in two 5 team divisions. Each team will play a 4 game round robin schedule in their owndivision with the top 3 in each division advancing to the single eliminationplayoff round. The top team in each division will be given a buy in the preliminary playoff round.

With so many strong midget and junior aged teams throughout Ontario, organizers arehoping to attract 8 teams to compete in a similar format in the juniordivision. Details have not been nailed down yet in this regard but should becoming forth by the end of the year.

Entry fee for the men’s division will be $500 payable to Kitchener Fastball Promotions, c/o Larry Lynch, 206 Moore Avenue, Kitchener Ontario N2H 3S9

Any and all interested teams can contact Larry by e-mail at llynch9 (at) rogers.com or telephone , evenings at 519 579 2903.

Jarvis Now the Travellers

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Meet the new Travellers

The area’s top fastball team is hoping changes to this year’s organization will bring with it a world title.

The team formerly known as the Jarvis Gamblers has encountered some swift and immediate alterations to the organization this off-season. The first is a name change. With three primary owners — the team; 2009 sponsor Dave Anderson of Murphy’s Fish and Chips in Truro, NS; and a silent partner located in Broken Bow, Oklahoma — the group settled on the Travellers as their new moniker.

And with some new investors comes a host of new players, including three that will join the team as they merge with the now defunct Broken Bow Spirit, a former perennial top ISC team.
“We feel this is a great opportunity for our local guys and for the community,” said Travellers GM Clarke Staats. “With U.S. Steel back, there’s a positive vibe around the team and the town and this will give people the chance to come out to the ballpark and see some world class players in a country setting.”

Despite the changes the team will still remain very local, with over half the roster hailing from the Haldimand and Norfolk area. The local contingent includes brother combo Andrew and Allan Phibbs, cousins Ian and Will Fehrman, Pat Graham, Greg Cournyea and Chad Staats.

Headlining the newcomers is Aussie Adam Folklard, who Staats hailed as “arguably the best pitcher in the world right now.”

Folkard — the ace on Australia’s 2009 International Softball Federation World Championship club — will be joined by New Zealand national team third baseman Brad Rona, pitcher Trevor Ethier of Saskatoon and Denmark outfielder Freddy Terkelson.

“It’s a good mix, probably the best blend of veterans and young players,” said Staats. “The core group that we’ve developed is just hitting their fastball peak now. When you get to 28 or 29 to about 33, that’s the time when you get your best out of players. I truly believe this is a contender for the ISC Championship.”

The team will begin play May 22 in Owen Sound as part of the ISC Travel League. The team’s first tournament of the year will go in Niagara Falls on June 4. Jarvis will play host to the ISC Travel League Tournament July 24-25.

Being merged with Broken Bow, the club will play under that name for the American Softball Association Championships in South Bend Indiana the weekend of Aug. 5.

The “Big One,” also known as the ISC World Tournament, goes Aug. 14 in Midland Michigan, which is when the team hopes to be firing on all cylinders.

Editor’s note: Jarvis is located in the Ontario province, near the USA border, about an hour and a half from both Toronto and their cross-province rival Kitchener Rivershark Twins. With Kitchener coming off of back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009, and Jarvis’s signing of Australian pitcher Adam Folkard and New Zealander Brad Rona, many expect the two Canadian teams to be 1-2 in the ISC pre-season rankings due out later this month. In the 2008 ISC World Tournament at Kimberly, Wisconsin, two Canadian teams squared off in the title game, Kitchener and Aspen Interiors, the first time two Canadian teams competed in the final. Will 2010 see a repeat?

2010 California A’s roster

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

From the California A’s:

The California A’s are looking to improve from the 13th place finish at the 2009 ISC World Tournament. With the additions we have made to our pitching staff and offense, we fill we have completed our goals over the winter to compete for the 2010 ISC World Tournament Championship.

We look forward to attending the 2010 ISC World Tournament in Midland, MI. and doing a very best representing our fans, supporters, and sponsors.

2010 California A’s roster
(pitchers in bold)

Sean Whitten
Travis Price
Dave Drotzmann

Bobby Rosthenhausler
Jeff Twist
Derek Mayson
Todd Budke
Eddie Martin
Steve Pinocchio
Marcus Tan
Pat Fuentes
Glen Ormbsy
Kevin Castillo
Darren Box
Jason Porto
Chase Turner
Dave Kimura
Nate Devine

Coaches:

David Weldin
Ron Guzman

Editor’s notes: The California A’s were Best of the West Champions in 2009. At the ISC World Tournament, Todd Budke earned all world honors, and the award as the top hitter in the tournament with a .538 average. (The All World award was Budke’s fifth by my count, something that ought to ensure a spot in the Hall of Fame when he retires — though last year indicates he remains one of the game’s top batters) Veteran Eddie Martin also had a good ISC World Tournament for the California squad. The A’s came within a few outs of upsetting a top 10 team in their 2009 ISC World Tournament opener last year, taking a 4-1 lead into the final inning, but were unable to hold the Explorers down. Midland tied the game with 3 in the 7th and went on to win 5-4 in 9 innings. The A’s dropped their second game to a strong Dominican Republic team, 4-2, but then rebounded with wins over two higher ranked teams, 5-2 over the host Quad City Sox, and 10-2 over Dolan & Murphy. The A’s were finally eliminated by the same Midland Explorer team, finishing 13th overall, after coming into the tournament ranked as # 20.

Their ace from last year, Argentine Sebastian Gervasutti is gone, but in his place, California has signed Canadian Sean Whitten, who pitched his Midwest Stampede team to a 4th place finish. Whitten earned 2nd team all-world honors for his efforts. Whitten, one of the hardest throwers in the game, also played a key role in Team Canada’s bronze medal finish at last summer’s ISF World Championships at Saskatoon. Joining him on the staff will be fellow Canadian, Travis Price, who laced them up for Team USA in Saskatoon, having resided in California since his early days with Team Rainey. 2008 ISC II Most Valuable Pitcher Dave Drotzmann gives California a solid third, who will have the benefit of a year’s World Tournament experience under his belt. Two more Canadians additions are expected to make the batting order stronger still, last year’s 2nd team All World DH Darren Box, and youngster Derek Mayson, still in his early 20’s, but already recognized as one of the game’s premier hitters.

The question:
