Midland’s Dresch going into softball hall of fame

of the Midland Daily NewsMidland’s Gary Dresch was on his way to becoming a professional baseball player when an inopportune injury forced him to switch sports.
But the change turned into a boon which, 44 years later, has culminated in his election to the Michigan Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame.
“I had been drafted by the New York Yankees,” said Dresch, 61. “But in 1965 during my senior year in high school, I broke my shoulder playing football. At that point, the Yankees dropped me.”
This Saturday, at the Midland Holiday Inn, Dresch will be recognized for his outstanding abilities on the diamond as he is inducted into the MASA Hall of Fame. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.
“The award means everything,” said Dresch. “All the travel, playing and coaching for 25 years was worth it.”
Love of softball ran in the Dresch family, and Gary’s first exposure to the sport came at a young age.

Editor’s note: The 1992 ISC World Tournament was hosted at the Cottonwood Complex, as well as a long string of Pioneer Days Tournaments, into the early 1990’s. The latter was considered the premier tournament in the “West” for many years, thanks to the work of current ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister.
Carl Hansen, for whom this tournament is named is the longtime sponsor of Page Brake, which was the arch rival of their Salt Lake City counterpart, Larry Miller Toyota, in the days when two giants (literally) of the mound would square off, Page Brake’s Neil Chadwick, and Larry Miller’s Peter Meredith.
Great to see SLC back on the radar.

2009 RED ROCK is Back!
After being forced to take a year off in 2008 due to the late withdrawal of our ball park by the City of St. George, Utah, we are pleased to announce that your Red Rock Tournament Committee, after nearly two months of negotiations, have signed a deal with the Carson City Recreation Department and the Carson City Convention Visitors Bureau to operate the very popular Red Rock International Invitational for 2009 and beyond! Update, November 7, 2008:
Due to the number of teams participating this year, here are some of the changes we had to make:
Team Registration: Wednesday January 21st 7 pm to 9 pm at the Clarion Hotel Maingate West. ( Coaches Only )
Coaches meeting: Thursday January 22nd 9:30 AM. @ the Clarion Hotel Maingate West.
Game Time: Thursday January 22nd @ 1:00 PM.
** Eight teams will have to play two games on Thursday 22nd and every team will play at least one game that date.
Editor’s note: The AAU tournament started in 2000 with just 8 teams. It grew quickly to 16, 24, 28, and finally a full 32 team bracket for the past several years. Fastpitchwest, Maddysphotos and Ballparkradio have had the privilege of covering the event since 2004, and we’ll be there in 2009, our sixth consecutive year, for the biggest AAU tournament ever, bursting at the seams with forty (count ’em, 40) teams. The broadcast program on Ballparkradio grew dramatically last year, to a ten game schedule, with the Kyle Smith, Blair Setford and Billy Hillhouse in the booth. Haven’t drawn the broadcast schedule for 2009 yet, but we’ll post when we do. Forty Teams !

[Vancouver, B.C.] – The Vancouver Grey Sox are pleased to announce that pitcher Travis Price has joined the team. Price is from British Columbia but now resides in California and was recently selected for the second consecutive time to play for Team USA in the ISF World Championship. Travis pitched the last two seasons with Minndak Millers and in previous years was with SoCal Bombers and Team Rainey.
Field Manager John Stuart comments on the signing: “Travis Price is an accomplished pitcher who will be a great addition to the Grey Sox staff. And he has BC roots, which is a big plus for usâ€.

Derek Mayson Returning Full-time in 2009

The Grey Sox are pleased to announce that Derek Mayson of North Vancouver is returning to the program on a full-time basis next season. Derek is expected to pitch regularly as well as play in the I/F and bat in the middle of the order.
Derek was the starter at 1B for Broken Bow in 2008, after spending the previous two seasons with the Grey Sox. In 2007 Derek was an ISC 2nd Team All-World selection and the MVP of the Canadian Nationals with the Grey Sox. Derek is also a member of Team Canada and a leader in the BC fastpitch community.

The ISC has released its Roster Forms for the 2009 season.
Roster Forms for both ISC and ISC II teams has been posted to the ISC website At http://www.iscfastpitch.com select “Rules and Forms” from the side bar. Under “Forms” you will find a 2009 ISC World Tournament Roster form and a sample form as well as a 2009 ISC II Roster form, along with a sample form. All of these forms including the samples are downloadable Excel spread sheets.
Changes include minor design changes and the full list of email addresses where rosters are to be sent.
