Editor’s note: The ISC streaming media program has been around so long now, that we almost take it for granted, that we can sit down to our computer and pop on a game. That is what the viewers see — the game. What they do not see, is all of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into making it happen, in large part, through the efforts of ISC Streaming Media maven David Blackburn.

As noted in the blog post belong, ISC-TV video operation suffered through some technical problems this year that were beyond their control. Sometimes the stream worked wonderfully, but oft times not, due to a trenching operation that cut a line that feeds the internet lines.

Since Dave invited me along on his very first (audio) test broadcasts back in 2001, I have seen firsthand the long hours he has put in for the benefit of fastball fans all over the world. This year, to make matters more worse, David was fighting the flu all week long, and due to a schedule conflict for his job, had to fly from Los Angeles to Kimberly Wisconsin, set things up, then fly back to Los Angeles, and then returned to Kimberly, Wisconsin again, and worked round the clock to get things things working.

So we tip our cap to Dave and say thanks for going above and beyond, so that the fastball community could watch the ISC World Tournament games. We’re sure you’re looking forward to an easier, smoother time in 2009, but in the meantime, for anyone wanting to catch the action they might have missed — including players in the games — there is a library of links above for you to enjoy.

A trenching operation cut through a critical AT&T T-1 Feeder Cable in Kimberly last week, which severely hampered ISC TV’s access to the appropriate bandwidth required for streaming live video from the Sunset Park Press Box. During the first 5 days of the ISC World Tournament, the live streaming was very problematic. It was very frustrating that the problem, and the solution, were completely out of the control of our ISC TV operation.

The feeder cable was repaired sometime on Friday Aug 15, and the final two days of ISC TV live streaming, went quite smoothly. Viewers who weren’t already alienated, enjoyed those final 6 – 8 games, as the tournament wound down to the Championship Game on Saturday evening.

There are now over 50 hours of the 23 game videos from the ISC TV coverage of the 2008 World Tournament archived on the Spirtsjuice.com / ISC page. These games are now available for viewing, on demand, for the next year. With a high speed Internet connection, the games can be viewed throughout the world. Other than an initial 10 seconds of buffering when the game is initially selected, the videos should play without any delays or buffering that plagued the first 5 days of our live broadcasts.

Hopefully there won’t be any trenches dug in the Quad Cities during August of 2009.

We are pleased to share Bob Otto’s blog with you. (Click banner above or here for story and photos) You know if his name attached, there are plenty of great fastpitch photos to go with the story. Bob was the official ISC photographer from 1995 to 2000. We have been honored to share many of Bob’s photos here at fastpitchwest. It was Bob’s work that provided the inspiration for Maddy to get serious about fastpitch photography. (Maddy’s photos from this year’s tournament due out soon, watch here for more info)

Be sure to scroll down to see a young(er) Todd Martin picking up the Outstanding Pitcher’s Trophy to go with the ISC World Title that his team, the Smokers, won in 1998.

Ten years later, he is standing in front of the same scoreboard at Sunset Park in Kimberly, Wisconsin, once again, winning the Outstanding Pitcher’s trophy to go with an ISC World Title, this time with the Kitchener Rivershark Twins. Two titles, two outstanding pitcher awards, ten years apart. Remarkable.

All Canadian Final at ISC World Tournament

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

O Canada !

Aspen Interiors rebounded from their tough 10-9 winner’s bracket final loss to the Kitchener Rivershark Twins, to defeat the defending champions, The Farm Tavern in the loser’s bracket final. Aspen advances to the championship game in a rematch of perhaps the tournament’s most exciting game.

The final marks the first time ever that two Canadian teams will meet in the championship game.

Kitchener Rallies, Wins 10-9 in 13 innings in ISC Winner’s Bracket Final

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Kitchener Rallies from Down 8-3 to Advance to Title Game

The Kitchener Rivershark Twins of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada rallied to tie the game in regulation, then again in extra innings, and finally, winning it in the bottom of the 13th inning, 10-9 to advance to the ISC World Tournament championship game. Ryan Wolfe singled home the game winner with the bases loaded in the 13th, in the 3 hour, 45 minute marathon. Aspen led in the game at one point, 8-3, in the top of the 4th inning, but could not hold the lead.

Steve Mullaley hit a big three run homer for Kitchener, to pull them them to 8-7 and turn it into a ballgame in the 5th, then doubled and scored the tying run in the bottom of the 7th. After Aspen’s Dale Levy homered to give Saskatoon the lead, Jody Eidt hit a homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game again, with Wolfe driving home the game winner in the 13th. It appears that Kitchener has suffered a huge loss in the game, however, as Mullaley was injured sliding into first in the 11th, and was seen after the game with a sling on his arm.

Todd Martin picked up the win in relief — coming back into the game in the 11th after giving way in the 3rd. Aspen starter Trevor Ethier suffered the loss, re-entering the game as well.

Pitchers for Kitchener were Martin, Scott, Cox, and Martin. Pitchers for Aspen were Ethier, Holoien, Smith and Ethier.
