It’s never too early to start thinking fastpitch. On the ISC page there are relatively few tournament posting for the 2008 season.

Wagar, Jackson Sign with Cents

From

St. Thomas Centennials Roster additions

The St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials are very pleased to announce the additions of pitchers Scott Wagar and Andy Jackson.

Wags is a workhorse who relishes the oppourtunity for a fresh start. He will be counted on to be a “go to guy’ for the Cents. The team is hoping he can add something to offensive side as well with his bat.

AJ is a veteran who has proven he can beat anyone at any given time. He will give us leadership on the field and help some of the young guys adjust to the open level. Andy is a very capable hitter and can play the outfield as well as 1st base. We welcome Andy back for his third stint in the St. Thomas area. He played with some of the Fingal teams in the ’90s and helped the Union Storm win the ’04 OASA Eliminations.

For more on this story, including other player signings by the Cents, see Al’s Fastball.

Team ceasing operations, can’t find a major sponsor

By Darryl G. Smart
Sports Editor

INNERKIP — The glass slipper the Innerkip Eagles wore during the International Softball Congress world tournament this summer has been smashed to pieces. “It is with great disappointment that I announce that the Innerkip Eagles are ceasing operations for the upcoming 2008 fastball season,” manager Jeff Whetstone said in a press release. “Due to the inability to secure a sponsor, we will be unable to operate.” Whetstone said for the team to survive another season, it needed $20,000. Despite that, the writing was on the wall.
“We could have waited until Christmas to make a decision, but it wouldn’t be fair to the players,” Whetstone said. “But we all knew that this would happen eventually.”

This end comes on the heels of the team’s best season, which included an eighth-place finish at the ISC world tournament in Kitchener. “Finishing eighth at this year’s ISC tournament was one of our team’s highlights,” Whetstone said. The Eagles began their journey in 2000, winning the South Perth Men’s Fastball League, the Ontario Amateur Softball Association eliminations, the North American Fastball Association ‘AA’ and eastern Canadian championships.

“We won everything possible so the guys wanted to try it,” Whetstone said. So the Eagles’ next obvious step was to senior. For seven years, the Eagles gradually began to make a name for
themselves on the world stage, moving up the world ladder. In league play, the Eagles captured the 2005 title and lost to the Jarvis Merchants in the season’s final.

“The Eagles have been a mainstay in keeping the ISC Travel League alive and it is the unsung effort of the Jeff Whetstones in the game that sadly gets lost when a team can no longer operate,” ISC Hall of Famer Larry Lynch said. “Take pride in the fact that you have given
a lot of players the opportunity to play at the highest level and continue at the highest level. Teams across North America have bolstered their own by recruiting from small- town Innerkip.” And that’s exactly what is starting to happen.

While catcher Pat Humphries recently signed with the current world champion Farm Tavern, the rest of the Eagles will try to latch on with another senior team. Unfortunately, the numbers game may play a factor, thanks to a merger between the Kitchener Hallman Twins and Orillia Riversharks. As part of the merger, it was agreed the new team will consist of players from both squads, meaning a full team’s worth of players will be looking for a place to play.
Despite the Eagles folding, Whetstone said there were no regrets. “If you see where we started, not many people heard of Innerkip,” Whetstone said. “Now they know most of our guys.”

From

[Denmark, WI USA] – The Circle Tap Fastpitch team is ready to announce the recent commitments for the 2008 season. With the recent transactions, the team feels confident that we have put together a team that will compete at the highest level and have an outstanding 2008 season. We look forward to playing in front of the home crowd in Kimberly at the ISC’s.

Here are the newest members of the Tappers.

Don Garvey
Jess Ellestad
Chris Miljavac
Kelly Wenstrom
Ryan Brand
Glenn Ormsby

Hope to see you all at the ballpark. Consider making a trip to Denmark, WI and take in the Boys of Summer Open which will be held July 11-13, 2008

Editor’s note: To date, Circle Tap is the biggest beneficiary of the Kitchener/Orillia merger. Four of the six come over from the Orillia Riversharks, following their merger for 2008 with the Kitchener Hallman Twins — Miljavic, Wenstrom, Brand and Ormsby. Ellestad was on the CT roster for last year’s ISC World. Garvey’s name does not appear on the preliminary rosters submitted for the 2007 WT, but has been a Tapper in the past. Garvey is among the best American players in the game, retired after the 2006 season, but will be back after a year layoff.

Last year’s Boys of Summer tournament
came down to The Farm of Madison, Wisconsin vs. the So Cal Bombers — the same two teams that would square off a month later in the ISC World Tournament championship game.

Midland Back in 2008

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

From

Midland, MI

The Midland Explorers are pleased to announce that pitcher Brian Urquhart will be joining the team for the 2008 season. pitching last year with Jarvis, and previously with Heflin and Fedlock, Brian has established himself as one of the top up and coming pitchers on the ISC circuit.

At this time, all starting position players have confirmed their return to the team, as have pitchers Grant Patterson and Mike
Joseph. Also, Scott Stasik has joined the team in a General Manager capacity as he will be helping manager Clint Beane and coach Del Benson in player recruitment and scheduling. Scott helped run the Frankenmuth team that made appearances at the ISC from ’02 to ’05.

Finally, outfielder Dave Frick has decided to retire from the Explorers. Patrolling centerfield since 2001, Dave has been one of the most underrated defensive center fielders in the game. The entire team wishes him the best on his post-Explorer career.

From

[Innerkip, On] – It is with great disappointment that I announce that the Innerkip Eagles are ceasing operations for the upcoming 2008 fastball season. Due to the inability to secure a sponsor, we will be unable to operate. We appreciate all the support that has been given to us through the ISC Travel League in Ontario and the ISC community. Finishing 8th at this years ISC tournament was one of our team’s highlights. Good luck to all teams and players in this upcoming year.

I. S. C. World Tournament Video Archives Now Available

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

I. S. C. Video Archives Now Available

The Streaming and Broadcast Committee of the International Softball Congress is proud to announce that video archives of 37 ISC World Tournament fastball games are now available for on-demand web viewing. Starting with the championship game in the 2004 ISC World Tournament from Fargo, ND, the archival video library includes three games from the final day of the ISC World Tournament in 2005 from Eau Claire, WI., and continues through games from the 2007 World Tournament.

The expanded coverage of World Tournament games began in 2006, made possible by the design and procurement of a live video tele-production system, and by the subsequent launch of ISC-TV. Fifteen games are archived from 2006, and eighteen games are archived from the recently completed 2007 ISC World Tournament in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

To view the games in the archive, go to the ISC Home Page, http://www.iscfastpitch.com/

and click the Sportsjuice / ISC icon at the bottom of the page.

To select a game from the video archive library, either select the most recent archive listed above the archive window, or click the down arrow in the archive window, and select the game of your choice. Viewers must have the Microsoft Windows Media Player installed on their computer, to play the ball game videos. To change between Full Screen mode, or other selectable video sizes, right click in the video image and then select. Once the game starts, to scroll to any point in the video, just click, hold, and drag the video progress slider button to any desired point in the time line.

The best news of all is that the on-demand archives do not appear to suffer from any of the buffering issues that plagued some fans during the streaming of ISC’s live broadcasts from the annual ISC world tournament.

“This public video archive of elite men’s fastpitch softball games is the largest collection in the history of the sport”, said Dave Blackburn, ISC-TV Producer. “It is the result of the hard work and collaborative effort of numerous dedicated ISC commissioners, specialists, and volunteers.”

“Our dual objectives are to satisfy the interests of fastball’s existing fan base while also exposing the sport to those who have not seen elite men’s fastball games of ISC World Tournament caliber”, Blackburn stated. “Hopefully, this exposure will help inspire a new generation of young male athletes to participate in the great sport of fastball,”

ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister was equally delighted. “The ISC is very happy to be able to provide this extensive video access to World Tournament games from 2004 through 2007. We are grateful to Dave Blackburn, and we commend his professionalism and dedication in making these archives a reality. In addition to greatly expanded sport exposure, these archived games could and should be utilized by teams as an outstanding player recruitment tool.”

In a related note, Dave Blackburn has announced that the number of hits for this year’s live broadcasts of I.S.C. World Tournament games totaled 58,963 a substantial increase from the 45,000 such hits during the 2006 World Tournament.

Kitchener Hallman Twins, Orillia Riversharks Merge

Monday, September 10th, 2007

“Rivershark Twins”

From

With the costs of sponsorships escalating and the ability toretain or entice premier players more difficult, two of the games most respected sponsorship teams have joined forces to keep a major fastball entity alive in Ontario .

Over the weekend the Kitchener management team and their primary sponsor Jim Hallman, and Bob Nydick long time major sponsor of the Riversharks club met in Kitchener. After hours of discussion it became clear that the principles and professionalism that both the Twins and Rivershark teams have been built on could only continue if there was a sponsorship partnering opportunity for each club. Both Hallman and Nydick are committed to make the Rivershark-Twins a continuation of their personal commitment to excellence.

“ It is very important to me to keep a major fastball team alive in the Kitchener – Waterloo area, “said Hallman, “ I can no longer do that on my own.” The Twins organization celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2007 and are widely regarded as Canada’s longest continually operating major men’s fastball team.

“ The opportunity to keep the Rivershark name alive is important to me,” said Nydick, “ but I am more excited about the lineup we can put together by partnering up with the Twins organization. I think our chemistry is going to be tremendous and that alone will translate to success in its own right.”

The roster has yet to be finalized and with a limit of 6 PRAWNS there are obviously going to be players gone from both 2007 clubs.“ It is more important to talk to the players who we cannot keep right now than it is to start announcing a new lineup,” said Nydick. “ We have all made some great friendships through this game, the last thing we want to do is to lose one of those.”

All indications are that there will be a very balanced split of both Twins and Rivershark personnel suiting up in the revamped lineup. While the roster is not complete as of now, Nydick did say the following players have made their commitment to the Kitchener team :

Todd Martin
Don Scott
Frank Cox
Patrick Shannon
Blair Ezekiel
Jody Eidt
Ian Fehrman
Ryan Wolfe
Jeff Ellsworth
Steve Mullaley
Derek Shackelton
Evan Boyd
Dan Loney
Dave Bailey

The remaining roster is expected to be finalized in the very near future. The coaching team sees ISC Hall of Fame managers Denny Bruckert and Larry Lynch joining Nydick, while former Twin head coach Doug Eidt is still making his decision on the future. Bruckert will fill the field managers position. While there are a number of details to be worked out yet the Kitchener based team will be looking to build on the experience and leadership of its veteran coaching staff to mould this club into something special for Ontario fans.

“ Denny and I have a long history of matching wits across the chalk lines” said Lynch,“ we have already talked philosophy and strategy for this group and we are absolutely on the same page.” Bruckert echoed Lynch’s feelings, “ Naturally we will have some work to get to know all the players but as far as working together we will talk lineups and strategies as a coaching team and let the players do the work on the field. There is a great deal of respect amongst the coaches, we areconfident this will spill over to each and every player on our ballclub.”

Twins spokesman Dave Bailey has been a key to keeping the local entity alive over the past 4 years and has been at the center of negotiations over the past week. “ When we had the sponsorship conversation with Jim Hallman prior to the World Tournament we knew there would be significant changes to our team make up in 2008. I don’t think anyone would have believed how fast things would fall into place, or for that matter how we would be able to keep it quiet. With the PRAWN limitations it meant some of my closest friends would not be able to be part of this team next year. The game will really break your heart sometimes.”

The Rivershark Twins will now focus on putting finishing touches on both a roster and schedule, “ We have sometime now to sit back and start the process, “ said a beaming Bob Nydick,“ I guess the season never does truly end.”
