Click here to view the Thomson Area Merchants, Thomson Illinois team website. The site includes a few photos from last year’s ISC II Tournament of Champions, including this beautiful blue sky shot of the Merchants playing at Budd Park.

The team played in its first ISC II Tournament of Champions last year, and are headed to the ISC World Tournament this year as the # 25 ranked team. In last year’s ISC II Tournament of Champions, pitcher Jonas Mach from the Czech Republic broke the tournament strikeout record, only to be eclipsed later in the tournament by Micksburg’s Cory Costello, after the Merchants were eliminated from the tournament. Costello will be back at the ISC II tournament this year with the # 1 ranked Niagara Snappers.

The Thomson Area Merchants had their best tournament of the year at the AFSA Classic in Illinois recently, where they knocked off # 8 ranked Circle Tap. (more…)

Ellsworth continues to carry hot bat

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

From The Guardian, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

[ALLENTOWN, PA.] — Jeff Ellsworth of Alberton continued his recent torrid hitting, but it wasn’t enough as his Orillia Quaker Riversharks fell 4-3 to Patsy’s of New York in the final of the Bob Walsh/Tom Madl Memorial men’s fastpitch Sunday in Allentown, Pa.

Last year, Orillia lost in the final to the now-folded County Materials team. Last week, Riversharks defeated Patsy’s in the final of the World Series of Fastball championship in Orillia, Ont.

At Allentown, Ellsworth hit a home run, drove home three runners and scored five times as he hit 7-for-19 (.368) in six games.

Sunday in the final, Ellsworth was 0-for-2 with a walk after going 0-for-3 in the semifinal against the Broken Bow, N.Y., Gremlins.

In crossover action Sunday morning, the Sharks downed Keatings Fitness 7-2 and Ellsworth continued to play a vital role, hitting 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Friday, he went 2-for-4 in the opener with two runs scored and an RBI in a 6-0 win over Pennsylvania Power.

Saturday, he hit 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double as the Sharks blanked the St. Thomas Centennials 4-0.

Later that night against Patsy’s, Ellsworth went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the sixth inning that cut the score to 4-3, but that was all Orillia could muster.

Rosters were released for the 32 teams competing in the ISC World Tournament at Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, August 10-18, 2007 today, posted at the official ISCfastpitch.com website.

Editor’s Notes: The So Cal Bombers enter the tournament among the favorites, ranked # 4, the highest ranking of any team since the 1994 Long Beach Painters finished 5th at Prince Edward Island. The Bombers have captured several tournament titles, including Red Rock in May, and the Monkton Fastball Invitational in June, a tournament which boasted 7 of the top 10 teams in the world. Argentine pitcher Lucas Mata joined the club this year, and already owns two world championship rings, won as a member of the now defunct County Materials team from Wisconsin. Manager Kelly McGiffin’s team is a blend of players from California (6), Arizona (1), Michigan (1), New York (1), Canada (7) Mexico (1) and Argentina (1)*. * (Mata currently resides in Mexico, but hails from Argentina).

Grand slam helps Patsy’s hook the River Sharks

Brad Rona’s homer lifts Patsy’s to 4-3 win and Walsh/Madl title.

By Keith Groller

The Patsy’s men’s fastpitch team is officially considered to be from New York City.

But when you talk to many of the team’s stars, you won’t hear a Brooklyn, Bronx or Queens accent, nor will you hear anything close to resembling the Pennsylvania Dutch lingo commonly heard at Patriots Park.

That’s because Patsy’s, like most men’s softball juggernauts, are an international team and on Sunday it was a New Zealander and an Aussie who shined the brightest to help the team win the eighth annual Bob Walsh/Tom Madl Memorial Classic.

Against the Orillia River Sharks in the title game, Brad Rona, the New Zealander, hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a scoreless tie.

Then Adam Folkard, the tall, hard-throwing Aussie, gave up three runs in the top of the seventh, but escaped further damage for the 4-3 win, nailing down the first tournament title of the year for Patsy’s.

Vancouver Takes Two From Portland on Sunday

#10 Vancouver and # 12 Portland Split Four Game Series at Portland

[July 22, 2007 – Portland, Oregon] – After dropping a pair Saturday evening, the Vancouver Grey Sox came out playing hard, smart and together on Sunday taking both games of the double header to earn a split for the weekend in Portland. John Stuart changed his batting order, threw in some hit and run plays, bunted more and received some strong defense and execution from his players. Coach Stuart said they “needed these” after the games. I might add they earned it. Portland had their chances, but this was Vancouver’s day.

In the first game, Vancouver went up 2-0 in the first on an RBI triple by Derek Mayson who later scored on a wild pitch. Portland came back to tie it the second on a hard liner double by Rod Rainey which hit the top of the fence. The score was tied at 3-3, until Craig Halliday hit a two run double in the 6th inning for the Grey Sox. It was a long, long at-bat with several foul balls until Halliday hit what turned out to be the game winning rbi’s. Mike Piechnik threw well for Portland in defeat. A couple of miss played balls and a check swing call hurt the big lefty. But, it was Vancouver’s day. Nick Underhill picked up the win for the Canucks.

Game two had Derek Mayson shutting down the Portland offense except for a solo blast by Brian Ree in the sixth inning. Nick Underhill picked up the save throwing “gas” while striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh. Bryan Abrey hit a two run triple in the 4th to supply all the offense Vancouver needed. Bricklin Anderson threw well for Portland in defeat.

All in all it was a good weekend for both teams. The players all got some needed at-bats and the pitchers got their work in. While Portland leads the head to head play six games to three, anything can happen when these two Northwest powers play each other. Next weekend it is on to Vancover, BC for the Vancouver Challenge. Hope to see you there.

Thanks to the Vancouver Grey Sox for coming down to Portland this weekend and treating us to some good ball. Always a class act (almost always) and a pleasure to host.

Vancouver Grey Sox at Portland DeMarini – Erv Lind Stadium

Portland, Oregon – July 21, 2007

Portland DeMarini took the first two games of this 4 game super series against the Vancouver Grey Sox. Vancouver traveled down to Erv Lind Stadium in Portland for this second series of the season.

In game one, Mike “Peaches” Piechnik threw a perfect game for the host Portland club. Paul Reyes hit a two run walk-off homerun for Portland DeMarini. Nick Underhill shut down the Portland hitters for six innings before suffering a tough loss in the bottom of the seventh. The story of the night was “Peaches was perfect in Portland” winning 2-0.

In the second game, Bricklin Anderson shut down the Grey Sox winning 5-1. Kevin Rasmussen hit a two run homer to give Portland an early lead. Todd Garcia added a long solo shot a few innings later.

The teams resume the series tomorrow with games at 10am and noon. The two sets of 4 game series keep these two Northwest powers sharp between tournaments and helps them prepare for next weekends Vancouver Challenge and the ISC World tournament next month.

Z & Piechnik to Be Honored at Vancouver Challenge

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Vancouver, BC

Two of Canada’s all-time greatest pitchers will be playing in the Vancouver Challenge, set for July 27-29, and they will be honoured in a special ceremony immediately prior to the 4:30 p.m. game between Horse Lake Alberta and So Cal Bombers on Saturday, July 28. Darren Zack first rose to prominence while starring for the Vancouver Magicians from 1990-92, and as we all know went on to rewrite the record books while playing for several eastern teams, including Toronto Gators and Tampa Bay Smokers. Mike Piechnik hails from Victoria BC and has thrown countless gems at South Memorial Park, where the event will take place, for such teams as Victoria Payless, Broken Bow, and more recently Portland DeMarini.

We look forward to paying tribute to these two phenomenal pitchers and outstanding ambassadors for the game.

Conrad Margolis
Vancouver Grey Sox

Editor’s note:
I first saw Piechnik pitch at my first ISC World Tournament, in Kimberly in 1989, in an extra inning marathon against Peter Meredith. Piechnik was pitching for The Farm, while Peter Meredith was with Trans-Aire. A year late, our Vista Bombers were in Victoria, BC for the 1990 ISC World, Zack’s first with the Vancouver Magicians. If memory serves me, the Magicians finished 4th that year behind Zack. Nearly two decades later, they are both pitching at the highest level of the game. Remarkable.
