Ballparkradio transmitirá el ISC World Tournament en Español

2010 ISC Hall of Famer to be – Alan Rohrback – CA

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

One of a series of profiles for the ISC Hall of Fame Class of 2010. Induction ceremony on Sunday morning, August 15, 2010 in Midland, Michigan.

Alan Rohrback, Lakeside, CA

In 1981, Alan Rohrback was named as “rookie of the year” in the Western Softball Congress with the San Diego Vista Bombers. His youthful skills resulted in his being added to the Camarillo Kings roster for his debut ISC World tournament in Saginaw, MI. The Kings won that memorable tournament, and Alan was selected ISC 1st Team All-World player, with team-mates Larry Nolan (ISC HoF 2002) and Floyd “Blue” LaVergne (ISC HoF 2008). In 1983, Alan joined the Lancaster, CA Chameleons, where he won the WSC batting championship (.411) and MVP honours. The Chameleons won the ISC tourney and the following year placed third, when Alan was named to his second ISC All-World team. Two years later, with the new-look Lakewood, CA Chameleons, he acquired his third ISC All-World Selection. Alan continued to play with various competitive teams in California, highlighted by an ASA championship ring in 1991 with Santa Rosa CA Guennella Brothers.

Editor’s note: I knew Alan as a opposing hitter ands teammate, on the 1983 Lancaster Chameleons and the 1987 Hilltop Tire Eagles. As a pitcher, I can tell you that the latter was always an easier experience. Two tournaments stood out in ’87, when we drove to Redding on back-to-back weekends in 1987 for the ASA “A” Qualifier and ’87 ASA “A” Nationals where we finished ninth with a 10 man roster. We were always a better team with Alan’s bat in the heart of the batting order, as were the Kings and Chamelons when he earned All World Honors. Congratulations, Alan.

Midland gears up for ISC Softball World Tournament

Geoff Mott | The Saginaw News

MIDLAND — Fastpitch softball enthusiasts from around the globe will be watching the 63rd annual International Softball Congress World Tournament when play starts Friday at Midland’s Emerson Park.

“We began audio streaming games over the Internet in 2001 and added video streaming in 2005,” ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister said.

“We’ve had an outstanding response to it, particularly overseas. We take e-mails from viewers and listeners and it’s amazing to see how they come from the different corners of the world. New Zealand, Argentina, Europe, Australia … they are from everywhere.

“Midland will get a tremendous amount of exposure worldwide.”

Hotels in Midland are full and spilling over into the Great Lakes Bay Region to accommodate 48 teams from all over North America. Midland is just the second Michigan city to host the ISC tournament — the first was Saginaw in 1981.

The tournament, a double-elimination format that includes the ISC II tournament for teams quickly eliminated, wraps up with championship games on Aug. 21. The inaugural Legends Tournament and ISC 19-under World Tournament also will take place in Midland.

“Midland is the perfect place to host a tournament like this,” said Kyle Beane, co-host of the tournament committee who’ll play in his 16th ISC World Tournament. “I know the Explorers will do well in front of the hometown crowd.

“There’s always been good support here. The actual number has dwindled as the sport has fallen out of the amateur sporting eye, but we sold 300 tournament passes before it started. Compared to other hosts, that’s a good number. Other tournaments haven’t sold a third of that.”

Action will be aplenty in Midland all week, including times when six softball games will be going at the same time. Two separate free clinics are available to boys up to 18 years old, a Special Olympics and ISC exhibition game takes place Wednesday night and fans can meet stars from yesteryear at the ISC Hall of Fame breakfast Sunday.

Postscript from Erie

A postscript from Erie, courtesy of Al Doran of Al’s Fastball

Thanks from Bill Hillhouse, tournament director of the Erie tournament which featured 6 of the top 8 teams in the world

Thanks to everyone who came to Erie this past weekend to make the tournament a success. It takes a lot to put on any kind of tournament but hosting a tournament with the teams we had in Erie this weekend takes it to another level. Without the teams and fans coming in from all over, the weekend would not have been a success. The weather was absolutely perfect, which was one of my goals when switching from the old Erie dates of Memorial Day to now. The other goal, obviously, was to attract the best teams possible as many teams are starting later in the year now. Hosting a tournament in May means having fewer top notch teams and very “iffy” weather.

I want to thank the ISC umpires who came to town, Rich Silva, Chris Techonica, and Jay Hart. Having some ISC level umpires was an absolute must for a tournament with these teams and you guys were great.

Thanks to BallParkRadio (Kyle Smith and Jim Flanagan) for making the weekend’s games possible over the airwaves. I know the folks around the world appreciate listening to them when they cannot be in attendance so it was an honor to have the games covered. Thanks Kyle for coming.

Thanks to Al Doran for coming and keeping everyone up to date with scores. I know everyone wants to know results in a timely manner and having you here to handle that aspect meant I had one less thing to worry about. And it’s always great to have Al at the ballpark.

I want to thank PA Power’s Eric Fogel for coming in and running the Budweiser All Star team. Getting that team assembled was a bit difficult but your willingness to run it for me was a huge relief.

A special thanks to the fans who were in attendance from different parts of North America. ISC President Dean Oscar came from Wisconsin for the weekend, as did fans from all over the region.

Obviously a special thanks to all the teams for attending. Without the teams, it doesn’t make for much of a tournament. A few surprises in Saturday’s round robin games led to some unexpected match ups Sunday. Thanks to all the teams for coming.

Erie Beer and Budweiser
helped me with some of the costs associated in this tournament. I am EXTREMELY grateful to them for that. Budweiser supports fastball here in Erie in so many ways, I can only hope that players and fans will support Budweiser too. The game is in dire need of sponsors and we are lucky to have the one we have here. Thanks Budweiser.

A final thanks to my girlfriend Jamie Clark, who was supplying Al Doran with scores from the NYC Peligro tournament over July 4th weekend. She supported and helped me do this tournament so many ways. I’m not sure I could have done this without her. Hopefully her photos will be up from the weekend’s games on her site soon, I will post a link to her Hot Shots Photos site when it’s ready.

Ballparkradio Archives (from Erie and more)

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Did you miss the Erie tournament broadcasts over the weekend? Perhaps you were working but want to catch the reply. Or maybe you were busy on the field actually playing in the games, but want to hear how the game(s) sounded to fans?

You can catch all the action “on demand” at the Ballparkradio archives. (click the blue “Archived” buttons after you click the link)

The “instant archives” are part of the newly designed Ballparkradio website, which permit us to get the games up moments after the final out is recorded. Hope you enjoy them. For those who have asked, we will be working, at season’s end, on getting many of the broadcasts from prior years posted to the archives.

Editor’s notes: The broadcasts featured our lead play-by-play man, Kyle Smith. Judging from the emails we received from listeners, his work on the four games was well received. I listened to the games from California, getting a “fan’s ear view”, and thoroughly enjoyed them. Kudos to Bill Hillhouse as well. Bill is one of the best color men around, and somehow found the time to wear three hats over the weekend – pitcher for the NY Gremlins, color commentator on Ballparkradio when he wasn’t playing, and, tournament director. Some of his behind the scenes work may not have been noticed, but was appreciated. Bill listened to the teams when they said they want 6 teams, not 4 to advance to Sunday’s championship bracket, incurring the extra cost of making that happen. Additionally, he made several trips to the field to test out our Rovair.com internet card, to make sure that we could connect for the broadcasts in a place where no internet existed. The little things often make the biggest difference.

Kyle Smith is fresh off of anchoring the broadcasts at three major tournaments in past month with top flite teams – Legends of Fastball in Kitchener, the Tavistock tournament in Tavistock Ontario, and the Erie Tournament in Erie PA. No rest for the weary though, as he will be right back in the broadcast booth on Tuesday night, where will anchor four nights of broadcasts from the Canadian Midgets youth tournament in Stratford, Ontario. Keep an eye out for the schedule of games, but last we heard, Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 8pm EDT was the first broadcast. A half dozen or so broadcasts, culminating in the championship game at week’s end. On Ballparkradio.com of course. The Stratford tournament will be the seventh tournament of the year carried live, starting with the AAU International tournament in Orlando, Florida, back in January.

And, last, but anything but least, Kyle will be sitting in the anchor’s chair for the upcoming ISC World Tournament from Midland, Michigan, August 13 through the 21st.

Here’s to another fastpitch tournament like 1979

Friday, July 30th, 2010

From the Midland Daily News

By Don Winger

Thirty-one years ago, thousands of softball fans descended on Currie Stadium in Midland’s Emerson Park to watch the Amateur Softball Association Men’s National Fastpitch Championship that featured 22 teams.

Starting on Aug. 13, fans will have the chance to see the top men’s fastpitch teams again when the Midland Explorers and Mickey’s Sleds play host to the International Softball Conference World Tournament.

The 1979 tournament turned into a special event when Midland’s McArdle Pontiac-Cadillac captured the national title.

A crowd of more than 9,500 packed Currie Stadium that Saturday night in September to watch as McArdle defeated reigning champion York Barbell of Reading, Pa., to claim the championship.
McArdle, emerging from the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tourney, defeated Reading 1-0 in 10 innings to force the “if-necessary” game.

Bob Ryan and Owen “Fog” Walford teamed up to pitch McArdle to a 3-1 win in the title-clinching game. McArdle was managed by Terry Collins, who later went on to manage baseball’s Houston Astros of the National League and the Anaheim Angels of the American League.
McArdle was made up of the top fastpitch players in Michigan. Prominent among the Midland players on the roster, in addition to Ryan, were second baseman Jack Starling, first baseman Jim Wright and catcher Nelson Cronkright.

Both Starling and Cronkright played key roles in the game-winning rally of the first game against Reading. Starling had a single and Cronkright drove in the winning run with a fly ball.
McArdle then went on to Tacoma, Wash., in July 1980 to represent the United States in the ISC World Tournament, which McArdle won by beating Canada 3-0 in the title game.

The 1979 ASA tourney was hosted by the Midland Redcoats, a group of local softball enthusiasts who worked tireless hours before and during the event to make it a success.

For those of us in the media, it was a fun time. We got to watch and write about some of the top fastpitch players of that era. Among them were pitcher Ty Stofflet and slugging first baseman Jeff Seip of Reading. Also notable were outfielders Bill Stewart of Seattle and Ray Allen of Santa Rosa, Calif.

In perusing the Daily News archives, I found stories we did about the Schlossers and their tasty French fries, about prominent ASA commissioners, about McArdle’s chicken mascot, and about hand-woven gloves.

There were interesting personalities such as umpire-in-chief Merrit Watson, ASA Executive Director Don Porter, McArdle’s statistics man the late Greg Bell, and Mitchell Mick, the radio voice of the ASA.

Helping me with coverage was Paul Neumeyer, then a college student and now sports editor of the Saginaw News, and Steve Griffin, now a longtime freelance outdoor writer for the Daily News.

This will be the ISC’s first trip to Midland. Hopefully, we will welcome these players and their fans as enthusiastically as we did those ASA players and fans in 1979.

It is true that men’s fastpitch teams are no longer as numerous as they were 31 years ago. But the elite teams coming in 2010 are just as talented as their predecessors.

So if you make your way to Currie Stadium during the tourney, I guarantee you’ll see some quality play and have a fun time as well.
