Red Rock Ends with a Twist

[ST. GEORGE, UT-5/12/05]-Now in its sixth year, the Red Rock Tournament at the Canyons Complex in St. George, Utah has become one of the premier events west of the Rockies, earning a reputation for a top notch facility, spectacular scenery, and attracting top caliber teams and players, including some colder climates like Canada who look to get their season started earlier than the weather back home permits. This year, an entire team from Minnesota, Vannelli’s decided to “go west” and play at Red Rock. For the second year in a row, some of the games were broadcast live on the internet, on Ballparkradio.com. (more…)

The tournament boasts a strong field of teams, with 4 of the 12 in the current Top 10, and ten teams in the Top 25. Here are the teams entered, and their current spot in the ISC preseason rankings:

ISC #18 Albaugh, Inc. sweeps opening weekend of ISC Qualifier, Omaha Nebraska

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Albaugh, Inc. sweeps opening weekend of ISC Qualifier, Omaha Nebraska (eScribe: Al’s Fastball List)

On the weekend, #18 Albaugh defeated #27 ranked Team Iowa, the squad that Sonny Perkins plays for, behind the pitching of Terry Luster. So Cal readers will recall that Luster pitched for Houston H.I.S. at the 2003 ISC World Tournament and was the only pitcher able to beat Team Rainey. Both Houston and Team Rainey finished pool play with 3-1 records, and Luster beat them again in a playoff game for the final “Sweet Sixteen” spot in the playoff bracket.

ISC #9 Midland Michigan Explorers Run Their Record to 7-0

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Explorers Weekend Results (Al’s Fastball) Two of the wins over the weekend were against Communiquest, Michigan, which finished third in the 2003 NAFA “A” World Series. For SoCal trivia buffs, Communiquest was the team that outsted 4th place finisher Anderson Homes of Wisconsin, the team that the Rounders’ Andy Lawry used to play on.

ISC #28 Aurora Dolan and Murphy take two from Rockford

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Aurora Dolan and Murphy take two from Rockford (Al’s Fastball) Pitcher Jason Iuli, who previously played in SoCal, picked up the win in the first of the two games, striking out 6 and going the distance.

ISC Out-of-Area Players List Posted

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005

The ISC has posted its “Out of Area” players lists for 2005. The ISC rules require listing of players from outside the geographic region of the team. It makes for interesting reading. Not surprisingly, last year’s top teams lead the list in the number of OOA players, reigning champion Broken Bow (NY) and runnerup County Materials (WI) with 15 and 13, respectively. The Farm Tavern (WI) also has 13 OOA players. Patsy’s, a new team from the Northeast with New Zealand great Marty Grant has a dozen.

Southern California teams, the So Cal Bombers and Team Rainey have four OOA players each:

SoCal Bombers
Mendibles, Albert CO-NM-AZ-NV
Ormsby, Glenn WA-OR-BC
Waltier, Dean WA-OR-BC
Underhill, Nick WA-OR-BC

Team Rainey
Anderson, Bricklin WA-OR-BC
Hardesty, Chad CO-NM-AZ-NV
Smith, Rick WA-OR-BC
Whiteford, Daniel WA-OR-BC

Observant readers will note that Sonny Perkins, who pitches with Team Rainey during part of the season, will be with Team Iowa at the ISC World Tournament, while Rick Smith will bolster the Rainey squad. Nick Underhill pitches with the Vancouver Grey Sox during the season, but will pitch with the SoCal Bombers at the World Tournament, as the Grey Sox are not bidding to go, electing instead to compete in the Sr. Canadians.

For those of you not familiar with another of Team Rainey’s new additions, Dan Whiteford, he’ll also be with the Vancouver Grey Sox for the Sr. Canadians. Here’s what Vancouver’s Conrad Margolis had to say about him:

“Dan Whiteford, a versatile IF/OF from Duncan, BC has joined the Grey Sox after playing the last two seasons with Victoria Travellers Inn. In 2004 Dan was the starter at 2B for Victoria, but he also plays 3B, SS and OF. “Whitey” hits the ball hard from the left side and is a welcome addition to the team.”

Feel free to post a comment here if you note any other player movement of interest to our readers.
