Aurora’s Competiton Stiff
July 13, 2007
By John Sahly Staff Writer

John Sudges of the Dolan and Murphy fastpitch softball team said his team seems to step up its level of play for the bigger and better teams.

Considering the level of competition at the AFSA Classic at Stuart Sports Complex this weekend, Dolan and Murphy will need to in order to put up a good showing.

With over half the field ranked in the top 25 in the country, the tournament (which starts today at 7 p.m. with Dolan and Murphy taking on Thomson Merchants) will serve as a good opportunity for teams to measure up against possible postseason opponents.

“We’ve been playing good ball,” Sudges said. “We’re kind of on a roll. Our pitching has been solid and we’re hitting the ball pretty well.”

This eight-team tournament begins with pool play today, and bracket play will start Saturday night. The tournament will serve as an International Softball Congress World Tournament qualifying event. The top finishing team will earn a berth regardless of region.

Vancouver Grey Sox at the Rose Cup

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

[Vancouver, BC] – The Vancouver Grey Sox went 3-2 in Portland on the weekend, finishing tied
for 3rd with SoCal Bombers. In both losses the games were in doubt until the final inning. In the preliminary round Nick Underhill and Jeremy Manley of the Broken Bow Gremlins battled to a scoreless tie through 6 but the Gremlins scored an unearned a run in the 7th and won 1-0. Manley was dominant, throwing a no-hitter, while Underhill gave up only two two hits. In a 2-1 playoff loss to Portland the game was 1-1 after 7 and with the International Tie-breaker rule in effect the Grey Sox failed to score in the top of the 8th then Todd Garcia singled home the winning run off Rick Smith with 1 out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th.
