Ken Vierling update

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Most of you will know by now that ISC II UiC Ken Vierling was involved in a severe single-car accident back in April that claimed the life of his friend and passenger and has left Ken paralyzed from the chest down. Ken’s family have been providing virtually daily updates on his progress toward recovery. You can follow along by clicking here.

Ken’s friends have created a web site to assist with fundraising efforts. If you can find a way to help, either by buying tickets, attending the events or providing support in some other way, please do so.

Please visit www.kenvierling.org to find out how you can help.

Pride is back in Decatur

Team doesn’t miss a beat in return

By Mark Tupper – H&R Executive Sports Editor

DECATUR – There’s no telling how many men’s fastpitch softball games Don “Doc” Boyer has witnessed at Borg-Warner Field. Maybe all of them from 1980 through 1995.

As the former trainer for the ADM and Decatur Pride softball teams, he has tended to more sore muscles, bloody contusions and overheated pitchers than he could ever count.

He cherished the camaraderie with the players and for the years of tireless work all he ever asked in return was a simple thank you.

But like so many of the players, coaches and fans of the game, Doc had slipped into the shadows, vanishing along with the sport that all but disappeared when the Pride ceased operation in 2001.

Then on Wednesday night – a night so glorious in its warmth and summer-like spendor – there he was again, one of the many ghosts of summer’s past strolling through the gates of Borg-Warner Field to welcome back an old friend.

Welcome back, softball. Welcome back, Decatur Pride.

And there was Arnie Gross, back again to operate the scoreboard. And Jim Cairns, back again to man the microphone, stumbling over a pronunciation or two because, he claimed, he missed out on spring training.

And there was Dick Cain, the longtime poet/proprietor of Tom’s Grill, stopping by to check on this curious collection of players old, young and in between.

When the decision was made to bring men’s fastpitch out of mothballs, someone had the good sense to assemble the new Pride with a mix of players who helped Decatur win four national championships in the 1980s and 1990s along with a group with young, fresh legs who have a chance to write another success story.

Wednesday was the home opener, the first Decatur Pride softball game in eight seasons, and in an eerie way, some things looked and felt exactly the same.

When Rick Minton drilled a home run to center in the second inning, it was a sight many of us had seen for parts of a quarter-century.

When David Boys pranced around at shortstop, it was a reminder that for years and years there was no slicker glove in the game.

When 60-year-old Larry Moffett raced home and side safely across home plate, it was a reminder that if you truly love the game, it ignites a passion that may not die until the legs do.

When Brent Stevenson pitched the Pride to a 7-0 victory in the opener, it was a reminder that very few men who have ever thrown the ball underhand have made it look so easy. His bedazzling changeup still comes in looking like a beach ball and leaves hitters looking like a beach bum.

And no matter how many years have passed, a look around the lush, green ballpark proves that kids still love to chase foul balls and that adults still seem to enjoy a cup of cold beer, which at $2 for 14 ounces makes major league suds seem like armed robbery. Doc Boyer came out to see some softball, but mainly he came to see old friends.

“I miss the people,” he said. “Every once in a while I bump into people I used to see at the ball park and I feel blessed to have known them.”There were a couple hundred fans at Borg-Warner Wednesday night and there may never again be crowds in the thousands that turned out for some memorable national tournaments in the 1980s.

No matter. Those who came cheered enthusiastically. They renewed friendships, munched popcorn and enjoyed the warm night air.

After a wait of eight years, it seemed more than enough.

Best of the West – Santa Barbara, CA – May 30-31

Monday, May 18th, 2009

We’ll be posting more info shortly on the upcoming Best of the West Tournament in Santa Barbara, May 30-31, 2009, including the schedule of games. In the meantime, a few “notes on my scorecard”:

Tournament director David Blackburn told me yesterday, that he has sixteen (16) teams lined up for the tournament (May 30-31) in Santa Barbara, the largest field of team ever in the tournament’s longstanding 18 year history.

Among the teams headed to the beautiful coastal city in 2009 are the Pueblo Bandits and Innovative Communications (the 2007 BoW champs). Last year saw a couple of classic pitching match-ups between Lucas Mata (So Cal Bombers) and Sebastian Gervusutti (Team Rainey). Mata and the Bombers won the Saturday round robin game, while Sebastian and Team Rainey came away with the win on Sunday in the playoff round, and went on to capture the 2008 title.

The tournament was started in 1991 by Long Beach Painter’s GM Allan Ruegsegger, and held that first year as the “Best of the West Shootout” at Joe Rodgers field in Long Beach. That one featured the two Salt Lake City powerhouses of the day, Larry Miller Toyota, with Peter Meredith, and Page Brake, with Neil Chadwick, the Guanella Brothers, the Painters and Vista Bombers. (held so long ago, that I played in it).

The image above is from an old T-shirt from the 2nd Best of the West in 1992.

Since then, the tournament has made the rounds, being held in places like Soboba, Winchester, but seems to have settled into a home in Santa Barbara the past few years. David Blackburn has been the tournament director for most of the tournament’s history and now getting a big assist from the tournament’s Santa Barbara host, Clyde Bennnett. The tournament has been up and down in terms of the number of teams (down to a half dozen a few years ago), but the most reliable event on the So Cal schedule for nearly two decades, thanks to Dave’s hard work.

Kitchener to Host 2011 ISC World Tournament and ISCII T of C

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Sunday, May 10, 2009

The International Softball Congress (ISC) is pleased to announce that Kitchener, ON will host the 2011 ISC World Tournament and ISC II Tournament of Champions.

Normally, bidding for the 2011 tournaments would occur during the ISC Board of Director meeting in August in Quad Cities. However, we have talked to each prospective host city for 2011 and all have withdrawn except Kitchener. It was therefore decided we would award the 2011 tournaments early, to allow Kitchener maximum time to plan and prepare.

Peter Hallman Ballyard

Kitchener has successfully hosted 3-prior ISC World and ISC II tournaments in 2002, 2006 & 2007 and we have every confidence their 2011 tournaments will be equally successful.

It is expected that Duncan Matheson will again serve as tournament director for the World Tournament and Rick Boyd as tournament director for the ISC II Tournament of Champions.

The contract with Kitchener will be signed later this summer after the Midland contract for 2010 is signed.
