Approved Bats for ISC Competition

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Because of the number of International teams competing in the ISC World Tournament the ISC will continue to use the certified bat list provided by the International Softball Federation (ISF). This list can be viewed on the ISF web site, http://www.internationalsoftball.com/. Click on Rules and Standards and then on certified bats.

The ISF have determined and published notice that August 31, 2008 will mark the end of the period during which bats that complied with the previous ISF Bat Performance Factor (BPF 1.20) shall be permitted to be used in ISF play and the new BBS (Batted Ball Speed) will be the only standard that is official. This test is similar to the test being used by the ASA. The one difference is in the speed of the ball. There is also a difference between the ISF and ASA in how bats get on their respective lists. The ASA does the testing of bats for their list. (http://www.asasoftball.com/about/certified_equipment.asp

The ISF requires manufacturers who wish to have their bat listed to supply test result that show that their bats meet the standards set.

The ASA has a banned bat list. The ISF has a certified bat list.

We mention this now so anyone considering a new bat purchase for the 2008 season may want to check their choice with the ASA and the ISF lists first to eliminate the possibility of a bat purchased for 2008 may be non-approved for 2009.

Softball Canada uses the ASA banned bat list.

As a related reminder, by book rule, any player found to be using an altered bat will be ejected from the game and the balance of the tournament.

ASA 2008 National Tournaments

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Continuing the ASA theme of today’s posts, here is the list of 2008 National tournaments:

ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch
7/31/2008 – 8/3/2008 Stevens Point, Wisconsin

ASA Men’s 23-Under Fast Pitch
7/31/2008 – 8/3/2008 Brandon, South Dakota

ASA Men’s Class A Fast Pitch
9/4/2008 – 9/8/2008 Gladstone, Missouri

ASA Men’s Class B Fast Pitch
8/27/2008 – 9/1/2008 McAllen, Texas

ASA Men’s Class C Fast Pitch
8/27/2008 – 9/1/2008 Prescott, Arizona

ASA Men’s Masters 40-Over Fast Pitch
8/20/2008 – 8/24/2008 Minot, North Dakota

ASA Men’s Masters 45-Over Fast Pitch
9/11/2008 – 9/14/2008 Springfield, Missouri

ASA Men’s Senior* 50-Over Fast Pitch
9/26/2008 – 9/28/2008 Fort Worth, Texas

* ASA continues to refer to 50+ fastballers as “seniors”. Someone tell them that the “seniors” are over playing slow pitch.

Editor’s notes: Speaking of date changes, ASA has moved the 50+ tournament to the last weekend in September instead of the heat of the summer in early July. I wonder if the 40+ will follow, instead of continuing to lose teams and players because they are involved in the ISC World Tournament, and NAFA World Series. Readers will recall that last year’s ASA 40+ and 45+ Nationals in Alabama were canceled due to “lack of interest”.

Sites Announced for 2009 ASA Nationals

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

From the ASA Website:

Men’s Major Fast Pitch – Southbend, Ind.
Men’s 23U Fast Pitch – North Mankato, Minn.
Men’s Class C Fast Pitch – Pending
Men’s A Fast Pitch – Pending
Men’s Class B Fast Pitch – Prescott, Ariz.
Men’s Class C Fast Pitch – Hastings, Neb.
Men’s 40-Over Fast Pitch – Springfield, Mo.
Men’s 45-Over Fast Pitch – Fresno, Calif.
Men’s 50-Over Fast Pitch – Prescott, Ariz.

Editor’s Notes: This is the way it appears on the ASA website….showing Class C as “pending” and also as Hastings, Nebraska. Hastings, of course, the locale where Energy Link made their run to the title, with some of those players moving on to the present day Lumberkings, Brian Teeters among them. There were 70 teams that year. The boys from Raymar also had a great run at that one, finishing third that year behind the ageless “Papa Joe” Salcido.

South Bend Indiana seems to be a popular venue for the ASA Major tournament. Turnout was certainly better there, in the heart of the midwest than other spots, in recent years. Illinois area teams provide a solid base of support for National tournaments in the open and upper-intermediate divisions.

Prescott, Arizona, one of my own personal favorites, appears to be back in the game. In the 1980’s, Prescott hosted the very popular “A”/Open “4th of July Rodeo Days” tournament which drew teams from Phoenix, So Cal, Northern Cal and beyond. Many members of the legendary Guanella Brothers had a team that went by the name of the Morgan Hill Nine. The Prescott Mustangs, with Mark Higgins and Ronnie James were always in the hunt in those days. Cars and trucks cruised down the main street in parade fashion all day long, a bit of small town Americana, going right past the ballyard, which sits down below street level, allowing passersby to line the fence along the third base line and look down onto the field. More than 1000 attended the 1987 championship game between the Morgan Hill Nine and our San Diego Hilltop Eagles. The “Dugout” bar was directly across the street from the field, so players didn’t have far to go for refreshments after the game.

Prescott hosted the 50+ in 2005-2006, the women’s A and B National last summer, and will host the 2008 “C” Nationals. Prescott is about a 2 hour drive north of Phoenix, up into the mountains, so it is much cooler than Phoenix, and boasts some scenic vistas of the entire valley. The 50+ tournament was well run there, with the only criticism I heard was the lack of cover from the sun for the players and fans.

ASA to move A-B-C Nationals to July

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Courtesy of the ASA’s Vanessa Woodmansee:

Effective 2010 the dates of the Men’s A, B and C Fastpitch National Championships will be moved to the weekend that includes the last Saturday in July. This change submitted to the ASA Council by Oakland ASA Commissioner John Gouveia after receiving feedback from many of the dedicated players in the men’s fastpitch game was approved unanimously. The basis of the change submitted included the reasoning that it was getting increasingly difficult for participants to get time off around the Labor Day weekend and the recent drop in the number of teams participating in the Nationals. We hope that the change will be one that benefits the great game of men’s fastpitch

Editor’s note: The change from Labor Day to late July is a big one, in apparent response to the dwindling number of teams at their National tournaments. It follows a date change by the ASA Major tournament a few years back, when that tournament was down to a paltry half dozen teams, and seems to have increased the numbers, along with the rule change allowing foreign born players to compete.

Turner credits father for softball honor

STOCKTON – Pete Turner Jr. will address a group of about 450 people inside a hotel ballroom this evening in Louisville, Ky.

The Stockton native will speak about his lifelong love affair with fastpitch softball. He will thank his teammates and coaches, and the Amateur Softball Association of America, which is inducting him into its Hall of Fame.

“Pete is being honored for what he did on the field as a player and as a manager,” said Ron Radigonda, executive director of the ASA, the national governing body of softball. “And as someone who continues to give back to the game.”

At some point during his acceptance speech, Turner, 51, will look into the audience and try to compose himself as he thanks his father, Pete Turner Sr., who introduced him to the game and taught him how to excel at every position on the field.

Tonight’s ceremony honoring a true softball legend is very much a family induction. If it weren’t for the father, the son never would have succeeded in a sport that requires tremendous skill, but doesn’t receive much attention.

“I spent my childhood at Oak Park on weekdays and throughout the region watching my dad on weekends,” said the younger Turner, who ASA officials say is the first Stocktonian to be inducted into its Hall of Fame. “Other kids’ idols were baseball and football players. My idols were softball players.”

His biggest idol was his dad, an outstanding softball player during the game’s heyday in the 1960s and ’70s, whose travelingteams sent the family packing to tournaments throughout California, Canada, Mexico and Hawaii.

“I’d like to say I got his heart into it,” said the elder Turner, 71. “If you are in this game at such a high level this long, you really must love it.”

The skills and work ethic he passed on to his son helped pave a remarkable career.

As a player, the younger Turner was a five-time ASA All-American and an ASA national champion in 1991 with Guenalla Brothers of Santa Rosa. He competed in five U.S. Olympic Festivals, and played and coached in the Pan-American Games.

He coached women’s softball for 14 years at Delta College, and won two league titles in three years as its head coach from 2004-06. Turner now is in his second season as the head coach at San Jose State. Since 2001, he also has been the head coach of the United States men’s fastpitch team, which finished second at the International Softball Federation World Cup this summer in Prague, Czech Republic.

Softball has taken Turner all over the world, yet he has maintained a sales career in the high-tech and publishing industries and has raised a family with three children.

“That was always my dream, to do what I did,” Turner said. “I just didn’t think I would do it on this level.”

Turner was a standout football and baseball player at Franklin High and began playing high-level fastpitch softball on his dad’s teams when he was 16 years old.

“We’d have him fill in for us,” Turner Sr. said. “He could play almost any position well, and he was always a great hitter.”

Turner played baseball at University of the Pacific but lost his passion for the game his sophomore season. He transferred to Sacramento State intent on playing football, but he didn’t pass his physical because of a previous knee injury. Turner focused on his studies and made the dean’s list, graduating with a degree in sociology with minors in history and psychology. He earned a master’s degree in business from Hamilton University.

After college, Turner turned his competitive energy toward softball. He played on traveling teams based in California, Seattle, Midland, Mich., and Salt Lake City, and he played on the national team. Turner was a solid hitter and a strong defensive player in the infield, outfield and behind the plate. He also pitched. But what set him apart was his combustible internal engine that never quit.

“He was very competitive; he played on a high edge, just on the edge of anger,” said Mitch Munthe, a teacher and baseball coach at Beyer High in Modesto who played softball with Turner for nine years. “You wouldn’t see it on the outside because he always had a very professional demeanor.”

It will be quite a night for father and son.
