ISC/ASA Pitcher Development Status Release

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

One month into the joint ASA/ISC Pitcher Development program, we’re happy to report what appears to be an overwhelming success. On May 15th, USA Softball National Teams Director Ronnie Isham and ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister made the initial announcement on various softball related websites. Since that time, 26 individuals have signed up for the program. Those who have submitted applications range from age 6 to 28 and hail from all over the USA. Breakdowns of those who are now part of the program are as follows:

By Age:
Age 6-10: 2
Age 11-15: 6
Age 16-20: 9
Age 20-30: 9

By State:
MO: 5
MI: 4
MN: 3
NM: 3
MD: 2
CA: 2
IA: 1
OH: 1
KS: 1
SD: 1
PA: 1
MS: 1
CT: 1

The ASA and ISC would like to thank all those that have applied thus far and want to extend this invitation to any other male under the age of 30 who is interested in developing as a pitcher. Students have the opportunity to work with USA Jr. Men’s National Team Pitching Coach Gary Mullican or former USA National Team pitcher Michael White. The program at this time is strictly a video analysis program. Applicants will be asked to submit a videotape every 30-60 days, depending on age and skill level. One of the two Instructors will then evaluate the video and make corrections/suggestions, which will be communicated back to the applicant. The Instructors will also supply the applicant with drills that will help to improve their overall mechanics. This program is open to players of all skill levels, from raw beginners to more advanced pitchers. There is no cost for the program other than normal postage cost to submit the video. Funding for the program is being provided jointly by the ASA and ISC. For more information, please contact the program administrator, Scott Standerfer, at Standerfer@mchsi.com.

“We’re taking a team that has a mix of veterans and newcomers (five),” USA Head Coach Turner said. ‘’Our focus is not only to win but built the program (Men’s National Team) with new talent that has not experienced the international game. The (Men’s National Selection) Committee believes we can accomplish a great deal over the next few years taking this approach. I am looking forward to the event and believe we will have a favorable outcome.”

Following the World Cup, the USA National Team will compete next in the KFC American Challenge Series in Oklahoma City, July 13-15, which will be the first time an ISF men’s event has been held in the U.S. since the ISF Men’s World Fast Pitch Championship in Midland, Mich. in 1996. B.J. Hunhoff makes Team USA roster

Softball pitcher shines

By Aaron Swenson
For the Argus Leader
Published: June 7, 2007

Last month in Chula Vista, Calif., some of the nation’s top men’s fastpitch softball players gathered to try out for the 2007 USA Softball national team.

When the dust settled, Harrisburg’s B.J. Hunhoff was still standing.

“It’s a big honor,” said the 18-year-old lefty pitcher, the youngest player to make the cut. “Most of the guys trying out were 23 and 24 years old, so I have some big shoes to fill.”

The 17-player squad will represent the United States at the Men’s Fastpitch Softball World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic, beginning June 16.

During high school, Hunhoff switched between his softball exploits and playing first base in baseball. He was also named first team all-state in soccer after helping Harrisburg win a state title.

He will continue his baseball career at the University of Sioux Falls while playing fastpitch softball wherever he can play.

“I go back and forth every week between softball and baseball,” said Hunhoff, who has also played for the Team USA junior fastpitch squad. “It seems like one night I’m playing softball, and the next night I’m playing baseball.”

Hunhoff has been working hard since his father introduced the game of softball to him at age 7. But when his father passed away (when B.J. was in third grade), Hunhoff looked to others for guidance.

“I started working with my junior coaches on pitching since I was 12, and I have been working with them ever since,” he said.

Team USA won’t start practice until three days before leaving for the World Cup. To stay sharp, Hunhoff travels between California and South Dakota, pitching in random tournaments and leagues.

“You have to do it all on your own time, and you have to be dedicated,” he said. “Your results are from your own commitment and the work you put in.”

The World Cup runs from June 16-24 in the Czech Republic, giving Hunhoff his first taste of Europe. He has only traveled as far as Canada, where he played in the World Juniors in 2005.

After returning from overseas, Team USA will compete in the KFC American Challenge Series in Oklahoma City in July. It will be the first time in more than a decade that the U.S. has hosted an international men’s fastpitch event.

“It’s supposed to be an awesome place to play,”said Hunhoff of the ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City.

And Hunhoff has earned his chance to shine, according to Tim Lyon, head coach of the USA junior fastpitch team. He has worked with Hunhoff since 2003, seeing steady progress from the pitcher.

“He has done very well for himself,” Lyon said. “We always tell our kids that we will walk along with them until we can no longer be helpful, then they must do the rest.”

The coach said that making the men’s national team at age 18 is a remarkable achievement for Hunhoff.

“I don’t know how many people have made the team at his age, but you can probably count them on one hand,” Lyon said.

Finding good young players has been a problem in USA men’s fastpitch, so Hunhoff is part of the youth movement. If all goes well, Lyon said the pitcher can probably play well into his forties.

“We selected him for the present as well as the future,” said Lyon. “Playing at this age will put him into situations that will help him out down the road.”

Editor’s note: We got our first look at BJ Hunhoff in 2005, when he was the youngest player on the USA Jr. Men, when they played in the So Cal Alliance league weekend, to help prepare for the ISF Jr. Men’s Tournament on Prince Edward Island. While some of his teammates were getting out of high school, he was barely out of middle school. But even then, you could see the potential. We saw him again recently, in January 2007, at the U.S. Olympic Training Facility in Chula Vista, once again with the Jr. Men. He had grown and matured a great deal in a couple of years, and had gone from being the youngest, to one of the oldest players on the team. Many of the other fresh faced kids were now looking up to him as a leader on the team, the way rookies in MLB look up to veterans who’ve played in the World Series. He had “been there”, having competed on the international stage. He was someone they could count on to tell them what it was like. How it was to face the likes of Canada, New Zealand and Australia. To tell them just how good the players like Adam Folkard were. And how they’d better work hard to prepare.

And now, just six months later, BJ is packing his bags for “the Show”….for ISF competition in Europe as part of the Big Club, the men’s team. Once again, BJ Hunhoff is back to being the youngest kid on the block; the kid brother whom the older kids let play. Because he can.

After reading the above article in the Sioux Falls newspaper, I read it again. The kid’s words stayed with me:

“You have to do it all on your own time, and you have to be dedicated,” he said. “Your results are from your own commitment and the work you put in.”

Words to live by — for all of us. He gets it. He understands what it takes to succeed, even at the ripe old age of 18. Wiser than his years. We’re rooting for you, kid.

5 were about the men’s program.

I’m just saying…….

Santa Rosa Clinches National Berth at Tulare

Tom Dower Goes Off in Championship Game, Leads Team to National Berth

TULARE, CA — Santa Rosa Fastpitch defeated The Silverhawks 18-12 in the “if needed” game to win the 1st Annual Men’s Fastpitch Western Memorial Weekend Challenge held here at Prosperity Park May 26-27. Santa Rosa not only took home the $1,000 first-place money but qualified for the Amateur Softball Association’s Class C National Tournament in Killeen, TX.

Jeff Nystrom hung on to pitch Santa Rosa to victory in the championship game, thanks to a powerful hitting attack led by Most Valuable Player Mark Young and catcher Tom Dower. In the title game, Dower had a home run, two triples and a double, while both he and Young hit over .600 over the weekend.

Thanks to Herb Dower for the latest edition of “The Dower Report”

Editor’s note: If a single, double, triple and homer is “hitting for the cycle”, what do you call Tom Dower’s performance in the championship game — a “motor-cycle”?

ISC and ASA Launch Male Pitcher Development Program

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

The Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball (ASA/USA Softball) and the International Softball Congress (ISC) are joining forces to launch a pitcher development program that will focus on developing new pitchers under the age of 30 for the men’s and boys fast pitch programs. Scott Standerfer of Charleston, IL, an assistant coach with the USA Softball Junior Men’s National Team, will serve as the program administrator. Judd Berthiaume of Roseville, MN will serve as the ISC liaison, working with Scott. Judd is currently the ISC Pitching Clinic Administrator.

“The Amateur Softball Association and USA Softball are looking forward to this new partnership with the International Softball Congress in order to develop new pitchers throughout the country,” said USA Softball National Teams Director Ronnie Isham. “With all of the technology we have today this is a perfect way to assist new players in their pursuit of greatness.”

“The ISC has attempted various means of pitcher development over the years but unfortunately, none were satisfactorily successful,” said ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister. “In partnering with ASA and utilizing a pitcher development system with proven results, we feel we are entering into a program that should prove beneficial for not only ISC and ASA but more importantly, for the health of the game.”

USA Softball and the ISC have named Michael White of Eugene, OR, and Gary Mullican of Mission Viejo, CA, as the analysts for the program. White has represented the United States as a member of the USA Softball Men’s National Team since 1995 and is an ISC Player Rep while Mullican currently serves as an assistant coach for the USA Softball Junior Men’s National Team.

Players interested in being involved in the USA Softball/ISC Pitcher Development Program should contact Scott Standerfer at standerfer@mchsi.com. Applications are available for download on the USA Softball website at www.usasoftball.com and the ISC website at www.iscfastpitch.com under the Developmental and Rules and Forms links from the front page. These web site links will have a program application and a sample email analysis to review. There is no cost for an applicant to participate in the ASA/ISC Pitcher Development program. In a joint effort, the ASA and the ISC are working together to fund all expenses associated with this new program.

Once a player has submitted an application to the program administrator, he will be assigned to either Michael or Gary to begin the analysis process. The analysts will contact the players via email to explain the types of things they will need from each player. Each player will need to submit a video of their workout to their respective analyst and in turn the analyst will evaluate the video and will correspond with the athlete via email.

A player that progresses through the Development Program could have the opportunity to participate with a club team in an ISC World Tournament, ISC II Tournament of Champions, an ISC Developmental Championship or at an ASA National Championship tournament.

We have been asked by Kevin Quinn, Softball Canada President, to refer Canadian pitcher prospects to Don Bates. Don will accommodate the pitcher prospects in Softball Canada’s ongoing pitcher development program. The ISC and Softball Canada have a close working relationship and we want that relationship to continue. Any Canadian applicants will be referred to Don Bates.

This program was created to develop pitchers of all skill levels, from beginners to those already pitching. Prospects are cautioned that entering this program will require diligence and a video demonstration of progress. Those who begin and fail to properly apply themselves with acceptable progress, risk being dropped from the program. Being a video analysis process, this program is intended to literally be year-round. Video submissions can be taken outside in warm weather months and inside during cold weather months. Don’t pass up this opportunity to develop or to improve your game.

Both ISC and ASA extend their thanks to the original 4-man committee who discussed and recommended this specific pitcher development program: Pete Turner, Tim Lyon, Bill Hillhouse and Judd Berthiaume.

More complete details will be issued to those who apply for admission into the Pitcher Development Program.
