USA Jr. Men’s Camp – Jan. 24-28, 2007

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

[Chula Vista, CA] – The USA Softball Jr. Men’s National Team will be holding an evaluation camp at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. from January 24th to January 28th, 2007. During this time, 28 young men will be vying for a position on the final roster of 17 which will represent the USA in Whitehorse, YT, Canada in 2008. Those players represent 7 different states and the District of Columbia. Their selection is the result of a three year canvas of the country for the best softball talent available. Over the past several years, the USA Jr. Men’s Coaching Staff has attended the ASA Boys National Tournament, the Missouri High School State Tournament, and the 19-under ISC World Tournament. In addition to attending these tournaments, the coaching staff has also conducted numerous pitching camps each year to identify and train pitchers for this and future USA teams.

The coaching staff is very excited about this group of players and feels that the level and depth of talent exceeds that of any prior USA Jr. Team and they should be ready to compete for a spot on the medal stand once they arrive in Whitehorse.

The following is a list of players that will be participating in the January evaluation camp:

1. BJ Hunhoff (Harrisburg, SD)
2. James Hartman (Hartford, SD)

New So Cal League to Host Tournament at Mayfair Park, Lakewood, CA – Jan 20-21, 2007

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

So Cal Fastpitch returns to one of its legendary fields, Mayfair Park in Lakewood, former home of the Lakewood Jets, and rival of the Long Beach Nitehawks. The field is one of the nicest facilities in Southern California, and hosted many top flite tournaments and teams in the 1970’s through the 1990’s. The vice-commish for the new Southern California Independant Fastpitch League, Ron Rupp provides information below on the new leagues’ first tournament. (Ron Rupp has a long history at Mayfair Park, having served as the batboy for the Lakewood Jets, run by his late father, Lanny Rupp. Rupp went on to play for the Jets, and continues to play locally. )

The newly formed SCIFL plans to hold a pre season tune up Fastpitch Tournament on January 20th & 21st at beautiful Mayfair park in Lakewood, Ca. Since the League will begin early this year on the weekend of Feb 17th, League officials thought there might be some interest in a pre season Tourney to give the players some work before the League begins. This Tourney will be open to the “B” and “C” teams, we suspect up to 10 teams will want to participate in this SCIFL event? The fee will be $300 and will be played in the round robin format with each team playing a four game minimum. Since the SCIFL is a soveriegn or independent League, we plan to offer our teams the option of National bids from both the ASA and NAFA in 2007. If your Team is interested in participating in this SCIFL pre season event, please leave a message @ 562-989-3339 or Email FHANKER@aol.com

Ike Pursell to Head up Central Cal Travel League

Friday, December 1st, 2006

From Ike Pursell of the Central California ASA:

Gentlemen,
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ike Pursell and I was the Fresno Metro ASA Commissioner from 1973 to 1984. I have been the President of the Fresno Senior Softball league from 1999 to 2003. I have plenty of experience in running leagues and organizations. Many of you might remember the old travel league were we actually played home & home doubleheaders between teams from Chowchilla to Bakersfield and from San Louis Obispo and Atascadero.

Things have really change this past year what with no qualifiers for National tournaments and the fact that anyone wishing to go can do so. This means that it is important for each team to get the best possible competition during the season to prepare themselves for the Nationals. I have accepted the position as CCASA Travel League director.

We are opening the league up to a maximum of 14 teams, running two divisions with 23 games guaranteed. The top two teams will have their entry fee paid to the National and the winning team will receive a $50 per team travel money. The league is opened to the Central California teams first and then to first come first serve from out of our metro.

Ike Pursell
Travel League Director

Cal Cup III – Update – Saturday, October 28th, 2006

WOW! HAPPY HALLOWEEN that’s the best way to describe the opening day of Saturday’s Cal Cup III tournament in Hayward. The weather in beautiful Hayward, California was absolutely perfect and the ball fields were primped to perfection.

Dave Jordan and the Cardinals rolled in to Larry Standley Field to start the tournament off with a 9:00 game against Romie’s Angels of Hayward. After all pleasantries were exchanged Dave handed the beautiful CAL CUP Trophy to me for safekeeping. He stated that he would be back to claim it on Sunday. Rick Appiano manager of Romie’s Angels stated that he had 1 pitcher for the day and that they will see what happens he also wished me good luck in figuring out all of the tiebreakers for the first round of play. Of course I responded with the usual “hopefully that would be the least of my worries.” At the Hayward Sports Complex 3 fields were being used by the NSA girl’s fastpitch program and they were already well into their first games of the day (they start at 8 a.m.), what a great way to recruit x-fastpitch dads back into the game….more on that later! The Bay Area Merchants and Fat City teams were gearing up for the start of a long day!

CAL CUP III CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
OCTOBER 28 & 29, 2006

To all Tournament Team Managers:

Attached you will find the tournament game schedule and special rules for the 2006 Cal Cup III tournament to be held in Hayward. We have registered 7 teams for this tournament and will be using 2 fields (the Larry Standley Softball Field and 1 Field at the Alden Oliver Hayward Sports Complex) with games starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Driving directions to the fields are also attached.

The tournament format will be slightly different that the normal 3 game guarantee round robin, single elimination format.

The format that we will be using is as follows: each team will play 2 games on Saturday morning to determine their seeding into a 7 team double elimination championship bracket that will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. The 1st place seed will receive the first round bye. Standings after the 1st 2 games on Saturday will be computed on the basis of 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 for a loss. Tiebreakers will be as follows: win/loss record, least runs allowed, total runs scored, coin flip or card draw if more than 2 teams tied after all other tie breaker procedures have been exhausted.

*Note: Any team having forfeited a game for ANY reason will lose all tie-breakers in standings.

Games 1-4 of the Double Elimination bracket will be played on Saturday, 2 games at 5:00 and 2 games at 6:45 p.m. Games 5–13 will be played on Sunday with the championship game scheduled at 5:00 p.m. and the “IF” needed game immediately following. See attached schedule for more information.

I would also like for all managers to please e-mail a complete listing of your team’s player roster and positions ASAP as we will be awarding a Most Valuable Pitcher and a Most Valuable Player award along with the Champions Cal Cup Trophy and 1st and 2nd place individual t-shirts.

If you have any questions or are in need of any more information please do not hesitate to contact me by e-mail at SCSAHAYCA@aol.com or by phone at:
