Just Five of 50 States Represented in National Tournament

From the Illinois section of the Fastpitchwest Forum: A Nationals with a special thanks to forum member Epley21 for tracking down this information:

Sixteen teams at this year’s ASA “A” Nationals. A better turnout than in recent years. Unfortunately, just four from out of state. But for the great state of Illinois, they could hold this tournament in one afternoon. In 1991, there were 67 teams at the ASA “A”. What has befallen this once great tournament?

From Illinois
Cerro Gordo Broncos
Springfield Brandts
Mt. Zion Merchants
Nokomis Bud Light, Nokomis
Vandalia Freight, Vandalia
Lee’s Sports Falcons, Radom
Rudd’s Trophy, Peoria
The Heat, Villa Grove
Pete’s Blues, Mascutah
Wessel’s Coors Light, T-Town
West Central Bud, Jacksonville
Chicago Fastpitch, Chicago

From out of State:
Ashland, OH
New Image, WI
RPM Reasnor, IA
Rice Creek Homer, MI

As aptly put by Illinois Forum member Jeff Proffit:

“I really like the odds of an Illinois team bringing home a trophy or two. “

Or the more sobering note by Epley21:

“Nice ASA National tourney with 4 out of state teams.”

Here is the wealth of information on the ASA “A” National tournament available at the official ASA website.

Young Bucks Give Manager Clyde Bennett his First Ever National Title

From the So Cal ASA website:

2006 23 & UNDER NATIONAL CHAMPIONS – YOUNG BUCKS

The Young Bucks of Southern California finished the tournament 4 – 0 and ended two of the games via the run rule. Led by Clyde Bennett and Warren “Pinky” Allsup, this group of young men scored 33 runs while allowing only 4 runs, one earned. This was the second year that the Young Bucks appeared at the 23 & Under Nationals and have earned trips to the Championship game both years. In last year’s contest the Young Bucks defeated LeMay of Minnesota in the Championship game but had to forfeit the “If” game due to their flight back home.

This year Clyde made sure that the team could play the entire tournament as they have flights on the red eye Sunday night so that they would have no problem playing for the title. In this year’s Championship game, the Young Bucks had a rematch against LeMay who worked their way through the loser’s bracket, winning six games in a row. With Anthony Martinez in the circle, the Young Bucks took only the one game to prove that they were the National Champions and defeated LeMay by a score of 3 – 1. Anthony was on his game in the Championship as he pitched a no-hitter, allowing only one run on a walk and passed ball.

The Young Bucks were honored after the tournament as they received their Championship medallions and eight members of the team earned first and second team All-American Honors:

So Cal Players Shine at ASA Major

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

A couple of Southern Californians are playing for The Farm Tavern at the ASA Major. One is a regular, Todd Budke, and another, a pick up from Team Rainey, Stan Grebeck. They both played a key role in the Farm’s 2-1 squeaker over Keatings Thursday:

“The only run Gorreau would need came in the sixth inning when Todd Budke, a second-team All-America last year, singled, scoring Stan Grebeck. Grebeck walked to open the inning and advanced to second on a ground out before Budke laced an RBI single to right field.”

The Farm Squeaks Past Keatings on Day 1 at ASA Major

Thanks to Bill Plummer for this report from the ASA Major National Tournament at South Bend, Indiana:

FARM TAVERN EDGES KEATING FITNESS CENTER 2-1 IN ONE OF SIX OPENING GAMES IN MEN’S MAJOR FAST PITCH NATIONAL

SOUTH BEND, IN – Sometimes one run is the difference in an ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship.

It was Thursday evening at the Belleville Softball Complex as the Farm Tavern of Madison, WI, nipped Keating Fitness Center of Wilkes Barre, PA 2-1, in one of six opening round games.

Seventeen teams are entered in the annual major fast pitch championship, which was held at this complex two years ago when The Farm Tavern repeated as national champion after winning in 2003 and finishing third last year in Florida.

In its opener, The Farm got an outstanding performance from right-hander Korrey Gareau who fanned 12 batters and walked one before he was replaced after giving up a lead-off triple to Travis Wilson in the seventh inning.

After the triple, Farm Manager Rod Peterson replaced Gorreau with another right-hander, Dean Holoien, who was the outstanding pitcher in this event in 2004. Dean, who had surgery on his right shoulder in January, got the next three batters in order to close out the game. Wilson scored the only Keating run on a passed ball as Holoein fanned two of the three batters he faced.

Holoien doesn’t have any pain throwing but he still isn’t where he wants to be.“I still have a long ways to go with the shoulder,” said Holoien who threw a no-hitter in the 2004 championship game, striking out 14 as the Farm beat Broken Bow Spirit of Broken Bow, NE, 6-0. “Korrey threw a good game for us. It’s crunch time for us with the ASA Nationals and the ISC Tournament.”

Besides the triple, the only other hit Gorreau allowed was an infield single in the fourth inning by Justin Stock.

The only run Gareau would need came in the sixth inning when Todd Budke, a second-team All-America last year, singled, scoring Stan Grebek. Grebek walked to open the inning and advanced to second on a ground out before Budke laced an RBI single to right field. The Farm added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on second baseman Derrick Zechman’s one-out solo homer over the left field fence off losing pitcher Bill Hillhouse. It was the first homer of the tournament.

Hillhouse allowed three hits and fanned three in going the distance as Keating dropped into the loser’s bracket.

The Farm Tavern 000 001 1 – 2 4 0
Keating Fitness Center 000 000 1 – 1 2 0

Korrey Gareau, Dean Holoein (7) and Todd Twachtmann. Bill Hillhouse and Steve Sell.

W – Gareau. L – Hillhouse. HR: Farm Tavern – Derrick Zechman.

Editor’s note: Yes, that’s the same Derrick Zechman approved for play by PA ASA to play in last year’s ASA “C” Nationals.
