Vote on Olympic Softball Was One Vote Short, With U.S. Delegate Abstaining

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

Revisiting the earlier announcement about the elimination of Softball and Baseball from the Olympics. The vote count – – though not the identity of the voters — is in. The vote was 52 in favor and 52 against, with one abstention, the United States delegate, Jim Easton. Four of the 52 that voted against softball were quoted as being “confused”, thinking that they were voting against baseball, not softball. (See story below).

From the Softball Canada website, citing a Los Angeles Times newstory.

Softball’s ouster from the Olympics last month came by one vote, according to totals made public Friday, and U.S. sports officials and softball leaders expressed hope that it could be restored for the 2012 London Games.

With 105 ballots distributed for the July 8 vote in Singapore, softball needed a simple majority of 53 to stay on the Olympic program. With an unidentified delegate abstaining, the 104 votes were evenly split, 52-52, ousting the sport.

The International Olympic Committee released the vote count to International Softball Federation officials, who had made a special plea to obtain it. No names were included.

So to all of you “B” players and teams — especially those who feel that there aren’t enough tournaments that include you — this is your chance !

It’s a great place to play ball in November !

With pitchers Cary Weiler, Russ Snow and Keith Frey, R & W Plumbing, CA took 2nd place among 28 teams at the ASA 45-and-over Nationals at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin this past weekend, pushing eventual champion Plannger’s Furniture to the “if” game. The California squad was 6-2 on the weekend, dropping the winner’s bracket final to Plannger’s, then knocking off Texas to get back to the final, winning the first championship game before losing the rubber match in the “if” game.

Former Long Beach Nitehawks Terry Canale and Cary Weiler of R & W Plumbing were selected First Team All Americans, as was teammate Bill Newell. Russ Snow, Pete Duenas and Pete Turner of R&W earned Second Team All American honors.

Where is Fond du Lac, Wisconsin you say? About an hour North and a bit west of Milwaukee, Wisconson. Did I miss something, or was there a news blackout during the tournament?

The Real Story Behind “Foxy 25”

Friday, September 9th, 2005

An earlier story below contributed to Fastpitchwest referred to the Penn Power cheerleader, Marley, as “Foxy 25”, owing to the name “Foxy” and number “25” on the T-shirt which she wore while cheering on eventual ASA “C” Champions, Penn Power. “Foxy 25”, we learned, actually refers to Rodney Fox, a Penn Power teammate who died tragically in an accident, and to whom the team dedicated the rest of the season.
