A-1 Bombers Sign Pitcher Marty Grant

Monday, May 5th, 2008

The Casa Trejo A-1 Bombers are very pleased to announce the signing of pitcher Marty Grant of New Zealand for the 2008 season. Grant is a long-time and highly respected member of the New Zealand National team and played this past season in the New Zealand club circuit. While unable to compete in 2004 due to an injury, Marty has been a star pitcher for New Zealand during their ISF Gold Medal run over the last several competitions and was a key pitcher for the Decatur Pride in the ISC a few years ago, twice being named All-World.

“We’ve been in discussions with Marty for a few weeks now and with his permission, we added him to our roster prior to May 1st, to enable this opportunity. Marty Grant has extensive International experience and is a world-class pitcher, and we’re obviously very excited to add his talent and leadership to our club.”

The Bomber’s ownership, staff and players welcome Marty and look forward to his contribution in 2008.

Rupp’s Worst Nightmare wins A Major in Palms Springs II

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

From the SCIFL News Blog:

Gerald Pyle puts together winner

In the finals of the Palm Springs 2 Upper Division The undefeated Long Beach Black Sox squared off against Rupps Worst Nightmare. It was only fitting that the two pitchers were Gerald Pyle and Ron Rupp who have been playfully sparring all year in The Fastpitch West Forum. The two teams on saturday played a thrilling 3-2 game in 8 innings which Long Beach prevailed. This game would be completely different as Rupp’s Worst Nightmare would win the championship scoring 11 runs.

The game was 0-0 after one as Gerald Pyle got out of a 1st and third jam in the first inning inducing Chris Minogue to hit into a double play after Fred Hanker and Andy Martinez singled. In the second Rupp’s Worst Nightmare would get on the board when Javier Fierro doubled and scored on a single. In the third Rupp’s Worst Nightmare got 3 off Sox ace Ron Rupp when Sonny Perkins singled followed by another single and a Javier Fierro RBI single. Gerald Pyle than tripled to left scoring 2 more making the score 4-0 after three. Fred Hanker pulled Ron Rupp after the inning and replaced him with Dave Blackburn. The Sox rallied in the 4th scoring 3 when Fred Hanker singled and Chris Minogue homered to left center. Ron Rupp than singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Dale Lopes than delivered an 0-2 pinch hit single driving in Rupp. Lopes made his 1st Sox appearance in 2 years in the at bat. The game was broke open in the bottom of the 4th off Dave Blackburn. Sonny Perkins led off with a walk and Troy Parker singled. Javier Fierro followed a triple with a RBI single his third hit of the game.

New Image WI, Caribbean Hit Jackpot in Las Vegas

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Update: 4/9/08
, from the official SCIFL website:

The first annual SCIFL Las Vegas Road Trip is in the books and New Image of Wisconsin and the Caribbean of California were crowned the winners in their divisions. While the tournament had some growing pains by being held in new venue, the weather was perfect for fast pitch. Twenty teams from four states were entered with two champions from last year’s NAFA World Series and two 23 and under teams. Not to be ignored, the rest of the entries had plenty of softball experience and there were some surprises and upsets.

In the Upper Division, New Image rolled to a perfect 4-0 record with wins over Team Lumpy’s of Utah, Rude-Pac and Amigos of California and Innovative Communications of Utah in the Championship game. Jeramie Holman and Josh Johnson each pitched 14 innings in the tournament. Holman struck out 12 with an ERA of 1.50 and Johnson struck out 18 with an ERA of 2.00. On offense, they were supported by Brent Holman who went 8 for 14 for a .571 average. Also Jerrod Johnson and Kris Agnew each hit .462 and scoring scoring 6 times. Jerrod also had 2 doubles over the weekend.

Innovative took the long way to the Championship game by playing 4 games in a row on Sunday to make it to the Championship game. Counting Saturdays late game, they made a clean sweep of five California teams in a row. Steve Black led the Innovative pitching staff with 13 innings and getting 13 strikeouts and not allowing a base on balls while posting a 2.15 ERA. Jody Osborne had the big bat for Innovative going .500 for the weekend with 8 hits, two of them doubles, and 4 RBI’s.

In the “A” bracket the Caribbean’s went into the Championship game as the undefeated team and faced another Southern California team, the Palm Springs Express. The game was scoreless into the bottom of the seventh until Palm Springs loaded the bases and “Big Hank” Prior brought home the winning run. But the Caribbeans were not to be denied of the their first Championship and came back to beat the Express behind four plus innings of relief pitching by Gilbert Joiner to earn the win.

Editor’s note: It should also be noted that besides pitching his team into the finals, Steve Black of Innovative Communications also somehow found time to drive 5 miles down the road to the complex where the lower division was playing, to help coach the Page Brake 18-and-under squad. All in a day’s work. A well deserved tip of the cap to Steve.

Update: 4/8/08: Quick results from SCIFL News blog:

The first SCIFL Las Vegas Road Trip is in the books with New Image of Wisconsin taking the upper division over Innovative Communication of Utah, who faced a tough day in playing five games in a row. In the “A” bracket, it was a So Cal final as the Caribbeans came back in the “If” game to take the championship over the Palm Springs Express.

4/7/08: Brief results in the “A” division: An undefeated Caribbean team was playing a once-beaten Palm Springs squad in the finals Sunday afternoon. Gilbert Joiner tossed a 3-0 gem against the So Cal Hustlers in the winner’s bracket final, while Graham Balog and his Palm Springs teammates held on for a 6-5 win in the loser’s bracket final over the Hustlers to get into the finals.

All results, including the upper division, at the official SCIFL website soon.

Maddy’s photos for both divisions later in the week.

Rude Pac Loads Up for ASA “C” Nationals

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Last year, the Rude Pac came away from the NAFA World Series with the “A” Major crown, behind the stellar pitching of Spud Barker. After improving their roster even more for 2008, they were at the head of the class on many pre-season pick cards, amongst the local So Cal teams competing in the So Cal Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL).

But in Palm Springs a couple weekends ago, the Pac was knocked off in a semi-final, having to watch the Panteras and Long Beach Black Sox square off in the finals, with the Black Sox coming away the winner. Worse still, the Pac was shutout by the Panteras in their semi-final.

Now comes the news that Rude Pac has their sights set on the ASA “C” National in Prescott, Arizona, over the Labor Day weekend, after getting pitchers Spud Barker, Gerald Pyle and Mark Bennett re-classified to the “C” Division.

We’ll let fastpitch fans draw their own conclusions on this one.

Las Vegas Roadie – April 5-6

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Next up for teams out west is the NAFA/SCIFL Las Vegas Road Trip.

From the official SCIFL website:

NAFA and SCIFL present the “Las Vegas Road Trip” Men’s fast pitch tournament the weekend of April 5th and 6th. This will be a NAFA sanctioned event with the participating teams separated in the following divisions:

A
A-Major/AA (depending on amount of teams)
AA/AA-Major (depending on the amount of teams)

The splits in the higher classifications will be based on the amount of teams that enter.

It is anticipated that 18 teams can be accommodated for this event and confirmation into the tournament will be based on the entry fee and roster being received. The entry fee for this tournament will be $375 and at the present time we will be using the NAFA 3-game guarantee bracket for all divisions. It is open to all NAFA registered teams. With a minimum of eight (8) teams in a division, the winner will have their 2008 NAFA World Series entry fee paid.
