May 24-25 Central Cal Travel League Fresno, CA

A Helping Hand for Russ Snow

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

We pass along a note from Craig Heberer, a friend of Russ Snow’s who is organizing a helping hand for Russ:

With input from Dave Itano, Ben Meyer, Russ’ wife Cindy, and myself…Glenn Itano has developed a webpage to provide information on how you can help brother Russ Snow get his ranch back up and running after he suffered a heavy loss from the devastating Witch Creek Fire.

One of the great benefits we get from running the Humboldt Fishin’ Lumberjack Charters every year is the time spent with friends and the tight bonds that have formed. Please do what you can to help out one of our own during this time of crisis and recovery. Russ is one of many small farmers in the area trying to keep a tradition alive. We support US businesses at the consumer end, we also need to support them on the producer end. I thank you in advance for whatever level of support you can provide. We will be back up at Russ’ ranch tomorrow to continue with the rebuilding process. Anyone who is in the immediate area is welcome to join the work party.

Please pass this email and weblink on to any friends and associates who would like to contribute to the effort.

Regards,
Craig

Here’s the link to the webpage:

Scroll down the page on that website and you will see photos of the damage to Russ’ property.

The email below was written by one of Russ’ neighbors and printed in the Los Angeles Times;

A Note from Russ Snow

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Editor’s note: A postscript on the So Cal Fires notes from last week, a note from Cindy Snow, pitcher Russ Snow’s wife. We are sorry to report that Russ’s home and business was in the path of the fire, but grateful to report that he and his family are fine. Somewhere in my batch of old photos are some of the Vista Bomber team BBQ on his ranch, amidst the the fish, firewood and Russ’ familiar trailer. It was a special place, an oasis amidst the city life. Sad to hear of the news, but knowing Russ, he will bounce back. A number of you had asked if/what we had heard, and so, with their permission, we have posted this note to family and friends:

Dear Friends and Family,

Here is the update on the Snow ranches. Wonderful news! John and Nancy Snow’s beautiful home is safe. We are so very happy and are counting our blessings. Several of the houses near their home, including one on their private ranch road and four on their old ranch, across the street, are gone. We feel very fortunate. Russ’ situation is different. Tuesday morning, We waited until about 10am and then headed back up to his ranch in Highland Valley. Roadblocks were everywhere, but with Russ’ local knowledge and ability to charm Cal Trans employees, we got to his ranch about noon. There is no other way to put it, but “we took a hit”. Russ’ home is gone; his mobile home caught fire and melted. With it went most of his personal items, he will miss among other things, his grandfather’s tackle box, a lifetime collection of reels and poles, his golf clubs, a Rolodex with his entire wood client list, his baseball card collection, photos and his wedding and world championship rings.

So Cal Bombers Head to Mexicali for Copa Dum

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Designated Hitter par excellence Charlie Pena will be with the So Cal Bombers this weekend in Mexicali, Mexico for the COPA DUM tournament. Charlie is shown above as a member of the Baytown Hawks, picking up the hardware at this year’s Latin tournament in Texas where he was named Most Valuable Player.

Reports have it that Rob Schweyer (currently on the cover of fastpitchwest.com) will pitch for the Bombers, along with Sean Whitten, while Sebastian Gervasutti and Jeremy Manley will land in San Diego today and head south east to Mexicali to suit up for a rival team. Sonny Perkins is also reported to be headed to the tournament, though no word yet on who he will be pitching/playing for. A tournament slated for the Dominican Republic was pushed back to a later date, to enable players to attend both events.

We hope to receive reports on this one and will update readers as information becomes available.

Mexicali, Mexico, is just across the US border from Calexico, about 2 hours east and a bit south of San Diego, as shown in the map below. (The Team USA Olympic Training Facility West is located in Chula Vista, just south of San Diego and also shown on map)

A-1 Bombers?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

The rumor mill is churning again. The latest, from a reliable source:

A1 BOMBERS—-MORE TO COME IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

Others note the absence of the Hunt brothers, Chris and Tim, from the recently released Taylor Farms Lumberking roster and speculate about what that means.

Taylor Farms Lumberkings Unveil 2008 Roster

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

See update below, added September 26, 2007

The California LumberKings and Taylor Farms have joined forces for the upcoming ISCII season. LumberKings Manager, Dave Weldin and Taylor Skipper, Ron Guzman has concluded talks that were started some years ago.

To continue to play at the ISC-ISCII level, we felt it was in the best interest for both the California LumberKings and Taylor Farms to combine. Without this fusion of the two teams it was doubtful that either team would be able to compete at this level.

The LumberKings looked hard into competing at the ISC level and fell short of the funding goal needed to compete. In addition to finances, both teams are losing players from their 2007 rosters for a variety of reasons.

The newly formed Taylor Farms LumberKings have finalized their roster for the upcoming 2008 season. The roster will consist of one of the top pitching staffs at the ISCII level. In addition to pitching we feel that our offense and defense has improved from the 2007. All of the players on this year’s roster come from two of the top three teams from last years ToC. Again, we would like to thank all of our players that played with us the past few seasons. Each and every one made our team a success!

Here is the 2008 roster for the Taylor Farms LumberKings:

P-Mike Egerdeen
P-Darren Strang
P-Dave Drotzman
C-Jeff Twist
INF-Eddie Martin
INF-Greg Hicks
INF-Pat Fuentes
INF-Shawn Ching

LB Deadwood Wins 2 at NAFA 50+ Masters

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

The Long Beach Deadwood team won both of their games Saturday, a study in contrasts. The ‘Wood scratched out one run and made it stand up in a 1-0 win over Hellman Motors of Colorado, than won a slugfest, 15-11 against Nevada Power of Reno, CA, to finish 2-0 on the day, win their pool, and capture a first round bye Sunday. The squad will play a 1:15pm semi-final game in the single elimination bracket Sunday, against the winner of the 9:45am quarterfinal between Seattle Fastpitch, WA and Hellman Motors of Colorado.

Paul Castillo provided the offense for Deadwood in the first game, reaching on a base hit, stealing second and coming around to score the game’s lone run. Dan Zupp went the distance, pitching a 5 hit shutout for the win. Castillo also made a game-saving catch for the final out of the game, spearing a liner down the right field line, with a runner aboard.

In their second game, Deadwood staked starter Joe Salcido to a 10-2 lead, but Nevada Reno joined the slugfest, scoring 5 to cut the lead to 10-7. Dan Zupp came on in relief in the fourth inning, and nailed down the win, despite Nevada Reno’s continued scoring. Dan Regas was four for five, including a two out, bases loaded double. Regas had a triple, double and two singles, while Bernie Lopez, a Las Vegas addition to the club, had three RBI. Everyone for the ‘Wood got into the act, with everyone in the lineup getting at least one hit. Dean Bettencourt and Paul Castillo scored three runs each, from the leadoff and nine-spot, respectively. Bettencourt was 3 for 5 in the game.
