Long Beach Deadwood Heads to Carson City, NV for NAFA 50+

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Long Beach Deadwood will open up the NAFA 50+ Masters at Carson City with a 9:45am game Saturday morning against Hellman Motors of Colorado. Their second game is 1:15pm PST, with the two Saturday games determining their seeding for Sunday’s single elimination bracket.

The Deadwood Roster:

1. Dean Bettencourt
2. Paul Castillo
3. Joe Crawford
4. Jim Flanagan
5. Bernie Lopez
6. Mike Encinas
7. Steve Miner
8. Dan Regas
9. Alan Rohrback
10. Joe Salcido
11. Barry Woolery
12. Dan Zupp
13. Dale Zeller
14. Len McIver

Alan Rohrback is a three-time winner of First Team All World honors at the ISC World Tournament, earning the awards in 1981, as a member of the champion Camarillo Kings, hitting .375 in, again in 1983 as a member of the champion Lancaster Chameleons, hitting .409, and finally, in 1986 as a member of the runner-up Lakewood Chameleons. Rohrbach also earned several All American honors at the ASA Major tournament. Rohrback was one of the game’s premier hitters during the 1980’s. In his first year of 50+ play, he picked up where he left off, winning the batting title at the ASA 50+ at Prescott, Arizona.

Regas and Miner both played in the Western Softball Congress for a number of years, during the Long Beach Nitehawks era. Miner was a member of the 1979 Nitehawk team that finished 2nd in the ISC World that year, at Bakersfield.

Steve Miner, Danny Regas, Dean Bettencourt and the editor were members of the 1991 Vista Bombers, runners-up in the 67 team ASA “A” Nationals that year, a tournament won by the Boulder Springers. Rumor has it that some members of that 1991 Boulder team are on the Hellman Motors team, Deadwood’s first round opponent in this year’s tournament.

Miner will reprise his role as player-manager of this year’s squad, as he was in 2005, and on the 1991 Vista Bombers. This weekend marks the first time Regas and Flanagan have shared a dugout since that 1991 final. Miner has a long history in the game, and was recently signed as an assistant coach of the San Diego Aztecs women’s fastpitch team, sharing space, so-to-speak with the great Tony Gwynn, who heads up the men’s baseball team. Miner had a remarkable .710 winning percentage in 20 years of head coaching experience in San Diego high schools. The SDSU website notes:

At the national level, Miner was a four-time All-American (1979, 1988-90), a seven-time Western Softball Congress all-league selection (1975-81) and the 1975 AAA San Diego Player of the Year. In addition, he set the WSC batting average record in 1979 and batted a national tournament record .793 in 1988. Miner may be best known in the softball world as the first player to try the crossover slap-hitting at the men’s national fast-pitch level, a technique that is widely used in the women’s game today.

Bettencourt set a record at that 1991 ASA “A” National, with 20 hits from the leadoff spot. Bettencourt, Woolery and the editor were teammates on the Vista Rangers at the 1989 ISC World Tournament in Kimberly, WI.

Time flies, eh?

Update Friday night: Rohrback tore a calf muscle yesterday at his son’s soccer practice and will not be able to play Deadwood.

Golden State Renaissance

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Editor’s note: We’ve reposted this a third time, with the addition some additional high finishers in the ASA Nationals this weekend.

California teams are enjoying a resurgence of success at the national level in 2007 post season play:

1st: Rude Pac, NAFA A-Major Champions, Des Moines, SCIFL

2nd: So Cal Bombers, Palm Springs, runner-up at ISC World Tournament
2nd: Bakersfield Lumberkings, runner-up at ISC II Tournament of Champions

3rd: A-1/Taylor Farms, Castro Valley, CA, at ISC II Tournament of Champions
3rd: River City Rockers, Sacramento, CA at NAFA “AA” World Series;
River City Rockers, Sacramento, CA at the ASA “B” Nationals; and
Italian Athletic Club, Stockton, CA, at the ASA “A” Nationals
4th: Santa Rosa Fastpitch, at the ASA “C” Nationals

Judging from my email bag, the post season successes have renewed fan interest in California fastpitch as well. Waking up on the final day of the ISC World Tournament and ISC II Tournament of Champions, and seeing all three California teams (Bombers in ISC, Lumberkings & A-1/Taylor in ISCII) still in the hunt and then later in the day, a California team in each final was something to see.

This comment appeared in a story reflecting on the 2007 ISC and ISC II tournaments, by Dave Birnie, from Ontario Canada:

What’s up with California teams ? Although they didn’t win a title they had the SoCal Bombers in the ISC Final and the California Lumber Kings in the ISC II Final with another Cali team in the ISC II Semi Final, the A1 Taylor Farms. California well represented in 2007 !

NAFA “A” World Series Teams Battle Each other and Mother Nature

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

NAFA World Series Heads into Final Two Days

The NAFA “A” World Series in Des Moines, Iowa managed to overcome several rain delays and play back towards the original schedule, thanks to some fine work by the Des Moines grounds crew and patience and reworking of the schedule by Benjie Hedgecock and company. Hedgecock got high marks from team managers and players alike for use of a toll-free “Weather Hotline” that was updated every 30 minutes during the rain delays, keeping teams apprised of the latest field conditions at both complexes, as well as the latest rescheduling to keep the tournament moving forward. Des Moines, IA boast two of the nicer facilities that the editor has seen, one at Racoon River and another in Central Des Moines. Both were engineered to handle wet weather conditions.

The three Southern California entries in the “A” Division are still alive in the loser’s bracket, needing 8 or so wins to claim the title amongst 51 teams. The So Cal Hustlers and Panteras are 2-1, while Palm Springs is 1-1, having earned a first round bye.
The Panteras have a longer road, having dropped their second game, and will have to win two more games to get to the spot in the bracket occupied at present by the Hustlers and Palm Springs.

So Cal Hustlers

The Hustlers won their first game, 8-6 over Point Blank Tatoo of Wisconsin, with Joe Salcido picking up the win and Bobby Cole the save. It was a game of “3’s”, with Larry Watts, Jr. getting 3 hits, David Hess scoring three runs and young-just-turned 21 Casey Shaw hitting a 3 run home run over the right centerfield fence, his first of the year.

In their second game, the Hustlers had their finest offensive outpouring of the year, banging out 22 hits in the 4 inning, rain delayed, 18-0 win over Mac-O-Chee of Ohio. The Hustlers led 12-0 after two innings Thursday night when the rains came and halted play. The game resume the following morning and the Hustlers picked up where they left off, with seemingly everything they hit falling in. Ken Shaw led the barrage with 5 hits, while Daniel Roth, Steve Profitt and Luis Saldana had three hits each. Roth had a single, double and triple. Player-manager-relief pitcher Bobby Cole had a double and the Hustler’s second home run of the tournament.

In their third game, “Papa Joe” Salcido was spinning another gem, nursing a 1-0 lead into the 5th before a pair of home runs by a strong hitting USB Pirates team from Minnesota turned the tide, and sending the Hustlers to the loser’s bracket. The Hustlers suffered a bit of controversy early in the game, when Bobby Cole came flying around third, on the heels of Doug Shaw scoring the first run of the game. The plate umpire was retrieving a bat from the basepath and collided with Cole, who would otherwise have scored easily. In the end, the controversy forgotten when the Pirates padded their lead.

The Hustlers will return to play today at 1:15pm Central time, in hopes of winning four games to make it to Sunday.

Palm Springs

Graham Balog tossed a 2-0 shutout for Express’ first win, before they were dispatched to the loser’s bracket by Grumpy’s Bar of Iowa. More details as they become available. (Sorry, they were at the other complex) Palm Springs will play at 1:15pm today and need four wins to get to Sunday.

Panteras II

With hard-throwing Anthony Martinez and veteran Joe Edwards, the Panteras began their battle back from “level one” (aka the Long road) of the NAFA “A” bracket. After knocking off Hollywood Sports of Minnesota in their opener, the Panteras held a 3-1 lead when play was halted Thursday night due to rain. Clark Construction of Indiana ralled for 3 and the win, sending the Panteras to the loser’s bracket. The Panteras responded well, though, notching an 8-3 win over Cougar Lanes, Wisconsin, as Joe Edwards’ change-up kept hitters off balance all game long. Jay Obregon turned in several defensive gems to anchor the Panteras defense. The Panteras play The Bar of Appleton at 8am, and need six wins on “Survival Saturday” to make it to the final day.

(Editor’s note: No slight intended by not covering other teams in the NAFA World Series. I’m playing in this one, so just passing along a few notes for the local So Cal fans at home as time and internet connection permit. NAFA doing their own fine coverage of the tournament, so we recommend you click the logo to visit their website for all scores, updates and more.)
