2007 AAU Roster – Florida Fastpitch

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

Looks like Dr. Larry and Steve Thurmer have put together another good roster for this month’s AAU International Tournament, an East Coast, West Coast, Midwest, Southern team with a Latin flavor. Coach Steve Thurmer is a St. Louis lawyer who played for the ISC World team, St. Louis GMAC for a number of years (and could still be playing according to some). Steve has a long history in fastpitch and the ISC — his father ran the St. Louis Browns team during the 1970’s. Dr. Larry Mastrogianakis is a longtime player and sponsor who always seems to land a talented group of players.

(the caption in Spanish says: Sebastian Gervasutti, of Argentina, one of the best pitchers at the Pan American Games, shown here with his bronze medal)

Gervasutti, Brown, Johnson, Palazzo, Darling, Gray, Brannin, Mastrogianakis and Felix all played on the ASA team that finished second at last year’s ASA Major National Tournament in South Bend, Indiana, with a 7-2 record, getting to the title game before falling to Circle Tap. Florida Fastpitch forced Circle Tap to the “if” game pounding out 16 hits and four homer enroute to a 15-3, five inning win in the first championship game. Florida Fastpitch has finished second in the last two ASA Major tournaments.

So Cal fans will recognize several of their players, including both members of their pitching staff — Sebastian Gervasutti (or “Seabass” as his teammates call him) is the young Argentine pitcher who pitched so well for Team Rainey in their final season, beating higher ranked teams along the way. Most recently, Sebastian pitched his home country’s team to a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Hermosillo, Mexico. He’ll team up at the AAU with Sonny Perkins, who pitched with last year’s AAU Champions, Team USA, and has also pitched for Team Rainey, as well as Albaugh, Iowa with fellow Team USA teammate Terry Luster. Another member of last year’s AAU champion will also join the Florida squad, Landy Rodriguez, who was recently named “Male Athlete of the Year” by USA Softball. Rodriguez, who hails from West Haverstraw, New York, had an outstanding 2006 AAU tournament, hitting .529 with five home runs, seven RBI and finishing near the top in MVP voting. So Cal Bomber fans will get a good look at Landy — he’s among the newest members of the 2007 team.

California Lumberkings Add Egerdeen to Staff for 2007

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

The California Lumberkings, the first team ever from California to compete in the ISC II Tournament of Champions resigned two of its pitchers from 2006 and added another, Mike Edgerdeen. The “twist” in the story is that the versatile Nimmo will put the gear and get behind the plate to catch in 2007. Edgerdeen had an outstanding 2006 ISC II tournament, while pitching for the JRW team from Yakima, Washington, and will give the Lumberkings a solid 1-2 punch in Strang and Edgerdeen.

The Lumberkings qualified for the playoff round at the 2006 ISC II Tournament of Champions in Kitchener, Ontario, and won their first round playoff game, before being eliminated in an extra inning thriller on a controversial call at home plate. The ISC II T of C returns to Kitchener again in 2007, in the Ontario province, a hotbed of talent at the ISC II level.

More from the Lumberkings’ David Weldin on the signings:

The California LumberKings (Bakersfield Ca) are pleased to announce the signing of

Darren Strang, Jon Nimmo, and Mike Egerdeen to their 2007 roster.

The LumberKings will play an ISC Schedule through the summer and then return to ISC II Championships in August. Strang and Egerdeen will share pitching assignments, while Nimmo will assume the catching duties.

The LumberKings are very excited to be adding these three quality players for the upcoming season and feel that they will be very instrumental in helping make a run for a top finish this year.

Latin Heat to Defend Beaumont Crown Dec 16-17

Friday, December 15th, 2006

From the Latin Heat Team Website

2006 Toys 4 Tots Tournament:

The HEAT are back in action this weekend (December 16-17, 2006) to participate in the annual Toys 4 Tots Tournament held in Beaumont, CA. LATIN HEAT return to Beaumont, CA to defend their 2005 Championship against a field of 14 teams, but the tournament motivation makes it obvious there are more lofty causes than the Heat’s finish. In addition to the entry fee, all players are requested to bring toys for donation to the Toys 4 Tots Foundation. The HEAT aim to contribute to the Holiday Cheer promoted by the tournament as well as bring about a few cheers when HEAT runners cross the plate.

In recent tournament action, LATIN HEAT finished 4th out of 14 teams at the Phoenix Winter Invitational Tournament. The HEAT offense burned opposing pitchers averaging 9.5 runs a game (38 Runs/ 4 Games). Championship hopes were eventually squashed by Utah Fastpitch (ASA “A” Classified Team), but not before the HEAT became the 1st team of the tournament to post a run against Utah’s Steve Morgan, the eventual Championship winning pitcher.

Recent Team News:

1. #6 – Mario Ramsey (3B/SS): Unavailable for the Phoenix Winter Invitational, Ramsey will rejoin the HEAT in Toys 4 Tots Tournament play.
2. #22 – Eddie Gonzalez (1B/DH): Gonzalez has been on a 3-month long hiatus from team play (Absent since September 2006). Unconfirmed reports suggest he may be in uniform for the upcoming weekend. His agent, Tonya Gonzalez, was unavailable for comment. Rumors are swirling that Gonzalez may tab Boras & Flanagan to take over his representation.
3. #28 – Ned Waters (1B/2B/3B/SS): #2 Hitter Ned Waters, known for years as one of the craftiest bats in Southern California, has recently expanded upon his arsenal. Waters is smashing the ball for power, totaling 2 HRs and 2 Triples over the last two tournaments, while maintaining his always-high On-Base %.

SCHEDULE: Double-Elimination Format

Saturday, December 16, 2006:

9:30 am Latin Heat vs. Pala Casino

Subsequent game times will be determined by Winner’s/Loser’s bracket position. Stay tuned for more news on the HEAT and tournament results from the Toys 4 Tots Tournament.

So Cal Bombers sign Darrell Tilley

Friday, December 8th, 2006

From Al’s Fastball:

The So Cal Bombers are pleased to announce the signing of pitcher Darrell Tilley for the 2007 season. Already boasting a stellar pitching duo of Sean Whitten and Tony Peeples, the Bombers are thrilled to add the hard throwing Canadian to the staff.

In 2006 Tilley threw for the Bloomington Stix at the ISC WT and had a strong performance that boasted one of the top strikeout/inning ratio’s (1.65) and with Whitten gives the Bombers two of only 10 pitchers clocked at 81+ MPH at the tournament.

Coach McGiffin:

“Darrell is a bit of a hidden gem and we’re excited to add that potential to our staff. He throws as hard as anyone in the world and having faced him a couple of times last year, we have first hand knowledge that he has great stuff beyond just velocity. With more support and less innings, we think he’ll take his place among the top throwers in the world this year.

With Darrell and Sean our staff now has two of the hardest throwers in the ISC and with the leadership of Team USA veteran Tony Peeples, who compliments them fully with great stuff and a bulldog approach, we’re very excited about the depth and quality of our pitching staff. We may be underrated in this regard going into the season but we believe in these guys and their ability to get people out. I think we’ll prove early on, we have the arms to make the run.”

Leaving two spots for last minute fill-ins, Tilley’s addition sets the So Cal Bomber roster for 2007 as follows:

1. Darren Box C/OF
2. Mike Butler INF
3. Greg “Scrappy” Crawford OF
4. Nate Devine OF/INF
5. Chad Ghostkeeper C/OF
6. Adam Lalonde OF
7. Albert Mendibles INF
8. Raymundo Parra INF/OF
9. Tony Peeples P
10. Steve Pinocchio INF
11. Jason Porto OF
12. Evan Potskin OF/INF
13. Landy Rodriguez C/INF
14. Marc Santillano INF
15. Darrell Tilley P
16. Sean Whitten P

So Cal Bombers sign Rodriguez & Lalonde

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

From Al’s Fastball

YUCAIPA, CA – The So Cal Bombers are pleased to announce the signings of Landy Rodriguez and Adam Lalonde for the 2007 season. Rodriguez is a current, and Lalonde a former, member of the USA National team and played last season with the NY Patsy club in the ISC World Tournament.

At the recent Pan Am Qualifier event, Rodriguez hit .294 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI, while leading the USA team with a .725 slugging percentage. He also hit .500 in the WT with a homerun and 2 RBI.

Lalonde is one of the games fastest players and has a combined average of .282 over the past two WT with 5 HR’s, and is widely regarded as one of the best defensive CF’s in softball. Adam is very familiar with many of the Bombers players and management, having helped them win a NAFA WT in 2004.

Head Coach Kelly McGiffin said he’s excited about these two additions and the Bomber’s roster as a whole.

“Going into the off season, one of our main goals was to add some hitters to the middle of our order and this really tops off that accomplishment. We’ve added key components like Potskin, Santillano and Crawford; and these additions really solidify our attack. Landy provides us another bat to complement the heart of the order and makes for a strong and deep offensive lineup.

Adding Lalonde to the top of our order allows us to use Ghostkeeper’s bat in other spots further solidifying the overall lineup. And with Lalonde and Pinocchio, it gives us what may be the two fastest men in softball.

Defensively we are very solid up the middle with deep catching (Ghostkeeper, Box & Rodriguez); great speed and gloves at middle infield (Butler and Pinocchio) and of course in CF (Lalonde). And our corners in both the outfield and infield are solid with any combination of Rodriguez, Mendibles, Devine, Porto, Santillano, Crawford, Parra and Potskin.

These two players give us great experience at the highest level and individuals that we think add value on and off the field.”

So Cal’s ownership, staff and players welcome Landy and Adam to the Bombers and look forward to a great 2007 season.
