California A’s Win California Classic

The California A’s captured the first ever California Classic title at the Sportsplex USA, in Santee, California, a 7-0 run rule win in the championship game over Rude Pac of Sun Valley, California. Sean Whitten picked up the win, a 3-hit, 10 strikeout performance through 5 inning. Gerald Pyle took the loss with Cory Avery in relief.

The game remained scoreless until the 4th when the California A’s plated 4 runs, on two walks and four consecutive hits by Chase Turner, Jason Porto, Jeff Twist and Kevin Castillo. Cory Avery came on in relief, but the A’s pushed home three more in the home half of the 5th on a walk, and singles by Darren Box, Bob Rostenhausler and Chase Turner, for the 7-0 final. Chase Turner led the way for the A’s offense, going 3-for-3. For Rude Pac, Jason Obregon, Canyon Vance and Casey Pymm had hits against Whitten in the losing effort.

Rude Pac reached the final with a 3-2 win over Tow Pros of San Diego while the A’s topped Vancouver Meralomas, 2-1 in their semi-final matchup. Italian Athletic outlasted the Bakersfield Silverhawks 3-2 in the Consolation final.

Cap tip to co-hosts the A’s and the Silverhawks for their work in putting together a most enjoyable tournament.

From Maddy’s Photo blog:

(Panfilo Valdez of Santa Cecelia Mexicali Mexico)

This past June 6th, I dropped by the 2010 Best of the West fastpitch tournament being held in beautiful Santa Barbara, California. As always, this tournament did not fail to provide many gifted players and many an exciting play. Although, I was only there for one of the two days of the tournament, I think you will agree that there was plenty of action to go around as well as some unique moments. You can see the photos by clicking on the 2010 Best of the West gallery under the Sports/Fastpitch galleries or simply click HERE.

Early Arrival for the California Classic

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Petco Park, San Diego, CA, just 20 minutes from the Sportsplex, Santee.

Some players have all the fun. One of them, Derek Mayson got an early start on his trip to San Diego for this weekend’s California Classic from his native British Columbia. He’ll be down on the field at Petco Park during batting practice for the Toronto Blue Jays vs. San Diego Padres game tonight. Mayson, among the youngest members of Canada’s National Softball team will be in action this weekend at the California Classic tournament at the new Sportsplex in Santee, just up the road from Petco — unless of course the Jays decide to take him along on their road trip.

For more information on the California Classic, click here.

Editor’s note: For any players or fans headed to San Diego, and thinking about taking in a game at Petco, they have three with the Jays (M-W), are off on Thursday and a three game set with the Orioles (F-S-Su). Friday night’s Padre game starts at 7:05pm.

Players and fans might want to peruse the Sportsplex policies before the weekend. A $2.50 gate fee is charged for those 16 and older (though you’ll get a token in return, good towards that first beverage you purchase (sort of a “one-drink miniumum”). Also, no pets in case Fido is a fastball fan. Food, beverages, including beer are sold in the park, but you can’t bring it in.

Complete set of policies after the jump. (more…)

The tournament will feature seven nationally ranked teams (ISC World Tournament rankings) , including three in the top 20, four in the top 25, with likely pitching staffs shown below in parentheses:

# 5 California A’s (Sean Whitten, Travis Price, Derek Mayson) [Pool A]
# 11 Bakersfield Silverhawks (Sebastian Gervasutti, Andrew Putnam) [Pool B]
# 15 Portland (Bricklen Anderson, Mark Bennett) [Pool A]
#22 Italian Athletic Club* (Tony Peeples, Tyson Barkman, Matt Barnes) [Pool C]
# 26 Rude Pac (Cory Avery, Gerald Pyle) [Pool B]
# 29 Maccabi (Russ Snow, Dave Blackburn, Jason Gluckman and Ronnie Rupp) [Pool A]
# 34 Cal State Builders (Darren Strang, John Peterson) [Pool B]

*pre-season ranking; do not appear in June 8 rankings, after announcing that they would not be competing in the 2010 ISC World Tournament

The top two ranked teams, #5 California A’s and #11 Bakersfield Silverhawks finished 1-2 at the Best of the West tournament earlier this month at Santa Barbara, while #26 Rude Pac and #29 Macabbi tied for third. Macabbi up-ended a very good Mexicali Mexico team in that tournament, while Rude Pac gave the champion California A’s one of their toughest games, falling 2-0 in the semi-finals.

The California Classic will showcase some of the world’s best pitching, with a number hailing from across the continent or beyond:

Canada:
Sean Whitten (Cal A’s)
Derek Mayson (Cal A’s)
Travis Price (Cal A’s)
Andrew Putnam (Bakersfield Silverhawks)
Bricklen Anderson (Portland)
Cory Avery (Rude Pac)
Tyson Barkman (IAC)

Argentina:
Sebastian Gervasutti (Bakersfield Silverhawks)

Minnesota, USA:
John Peterson (Cal State Builders)

Mars:

Editor’s note: Cap tip to Blair Setford for getting the word out about the Ballparkradio broadcast of the championship game today. We were experimenting with a cellular wireless card for our broadcasts, and decided to turn out “test” into a regular broadcast. We were pleased with the results, in that it delivered a solid, stable connection with good sound quality. This bodes well for our ability to broadcast from locales without a permanent internet connection. We welcome additional feedback on the signal and sound quality from anyone that tuned in today.
