First Day of Spring

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

From MaddysPhotos Blog:

It is a sure sign that spring is here when the fastpitch fields are filled with players and surrounded by fans. This past weekend, and on the first day of spring, I found myself in Santa Fe Springs once again, sharing the ballfield with our local (and talented) Southern California players. Other commitments had kept me from shooting the first day of this their first tournament of the season but with camera in hand I went on Sunday to at least catch some of the action. As always, there was no shortage of action to be captured and friends to say hello to. So, although the gallery is not very extensive, I share with you what I consider the best rite of spring: playing fastpitch under sunny skies and sharing it with the best of friends. – Maddy Flanagan.

Liberty Prevails

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Liberty may not have prevailed in some parts of the country today, but it did in Santa Fe Springs California, as Liberty Fastpitch captured the top spot among 15 teams at the SCIFL League Weekend at Santa Fe Springs California.

Veteran Eddie Patterson (a former shortstop and catcher) was in the circle for Liberty Fastpitch in their 2-1 championship game win over the Colton Dirt Bags. Liberty Building Maintenance & Services, Inc. is the new sponsor for the former Flor de Cana squad headed up by centerfielder David Carrillo and skipper Tom Dudley.

As noted at the team’s website:

In 2009, the team posted a combined record of 37-22-1. The season was highlighted by a 3rd Place finish at the 2009 North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) – A Division World Series, which drew 67 teams from around the country.

A look at the Liberty lineup, after the jump.

The SCIFL has seen a growth in the number of teams from recent years, with many teams boasting solid pitching staffs two and three deep, including the likes of Mark Bennett, Matt Barnes, Mark Higgins, Lonnie Brooks, Billy Montana, Dan Zupp, Anthony Martinez, Darrin McCall, Randy Clay, Tommy Obregon, Brett Pobantz, David Blackburn, Ronnie Rupp, and Gerald Pyle to name a few.

Robert Hernandez, who has organized the So Cal leagues for the better part of a decade, continues as the president of the SCIFL (the So Cal Independent Fastpitch League. As other leagues have fallen by the wayside, the SCIFL continues to draw teams and players from Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and surrounding areas, providing a place for top-notch competition. (California’s other top league West Coast Fastpitch Association, located in Northern California, the other)

The format for the league is round-robin on Saturdays, the results of which are used to determine seeding for Sunday’s single elimination bracket play.

On this Sunday in Santa Fe Springs California, the final four teams left standing by 1:30 PM Sunday were the two finalists, Liberty Fastpitch, and Colton Dirt Bags, along with the Long Beach Black Sox, and San Diego Primetime. The Colton squad, a new team for 2010, upset some highly regarded teams enroute to their second place finish over the weekend. The Dirt Bags have a three man–err – three person pitching staff of Anthony Martinez, Brett Pobantz and Desiree Sorrano
.

(Trying to recall a female pitcher in men’s tournament? Robin Freels, Portland DeMarini Tournament, 2004-2005 comes to mind)

The Dirt Bag team has a nucleus of players from the Colton high school baseball team, also attended by Desiree Sorrano. Sorrano was one of the top pitchers in the Pac-10 win attending Arizona State, and has quickly won they respect of hitters in the SCIFL.

The next big event for the SCIFL will be the “Las Vegas Road Trip III“, April 10-11, 2010, with no less than 27 teams currently entered for that one.

(Click logo for official SCIFL website)

The third edition of the Road Trip is coming up quickly the second weekend of April. At this time there are 27 teams entered into the event. I am looking for one more AA-Major or AA team to compete in the upper division. Teams already entered into the event in this division are: CPI (NY), Cardinals(CA), Hooves (AZ), New Image (WI), Rude-Pac (CA), Si Senor, (AZ) and Sta. Cecilia (CA/MEX).

The brackets will be created shortly, if you wish to enter or would like additional information please contact me.

The two other division are set with the A-Major having 8 teams and the A coming in with 12. Unfortunately the current economy prevented some teams from participating this year but hopefully they will be able to join us next year. Complete bracket information will be posted shortly on the SCIFL web site: www.scifastpitch.com

California Classic brings open-level fastpitch back to Southern California

Written by Bob Otto on March 11th, 2010
“We are hoping to make the California Classic the premiere tournament in the Western U.S.” – Chris McGehee

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Once upon a time, Southern California was blessed with an abundance of open-level men’s fastpitch tournaments.

The Long Beach Nitehawks, The Lakewood Jets, the Vista Bombers, and the city of Oceanside hosted annual tournaments. These renowned tournaments drew world-class teams from throughout California and the southwest.

But those tournaments have long disappeared.

But three men have launched a Southern California revival of sorts. Dave Weldin, Chris McGehee, and Robert McCormick – all from Bakersfield – have banded together to create the “2010 California Classic.”

Their goal is to bring International Softball Congress (ISC) open-level men’s fastpitch back to the southland.

The California Classic will be held June 19-20 in Santee at Sportsplex USA – a professional softball park that opened early this year.

TOP-FLIGHT COMPETITION
12 teams have entered from California, Oregon, New Mexico, Nebraska, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament is shaping up to be a battle royal. For at stake is a coveted prize:

A berth into the 63rd Annual ISC World Tournament in Midland, Michigan, August 13-21.

Now why would three men from Bakersfield – located in central California – want to host a tournament in the San Diego area?

“We decided to host a tournament in San Diego mainly due to the location,” Said Weldin, who manages the California A’s out of Bakersfield.

“There are a lot of attractions in San Diego and Sportsplex USA and the hotel are approximately 15 minutes from the San Diego Airport. Therefore, our tourney should be completed with no one having to leave early to catch flights.”
Weldin and McGehee plan on the tournament becoming an annual event. A must-attend tournament in Southern California.

“We are hoping to make the California Classic the premiere tournament in the Western U.S.,” said McGehee, who plays for the Bakersfield Silverhawks.

“We want to grow this tournament to the point where we will be able to put together a field that would include the top teams in the world.”
McGehee added that future plans include a lower division of up to12 teams.

“That would allow some of the (lower division) teams the opportunity to play in a top quality tournament,” he said, “and hopefully, encourage those teams to move up and try to play at the next level.”

ISC II TofC CHAMPS
As the manager of the California A’s, Weldin realizes to compete at the ISC World Tournament and ISC II Tournament of Champions level, the A’s must tangle with top-flight competition.

But a look into the recent past reveals he’s already done pretty well.

Weldin managed the Bakersfield Taylor Farms Lumberkings to the championship of the ISC II Tournament of Champions in 2008. He’s had a taste of ISC competition. And he wants more.

Now the task is to get back to the 2010 ISC World Tournament.

A FANS DELIGHT
And with only one tournament berth allotted to the California Classic, the competition figures to be fierce. It also promises to be a delight for fastpitch fans.

“We want to put together an Open-level tournament that would be fun for the fans and the teams and their families,” Weldin said.

The response so far?

“The teams that have entered are all excited about the opportunity to play against other fastptich teams that are all trying to qualify for the World Tournament,” McGehee said.
