Update

Joe Todd advises that Wellington Sox defeated Linwood Junior Chiefs in the “A” final in Mitchell.

Some notes from Joe Todd, of Ballpark Radio: Port Elgin did not have Scott Smith or Matt Hamilton, for pitching they had Scott Christie, Rob Fawcett, and Shaun Winship who showed up for their last game. Lead-off batter Darryl McKinnon had season-ending surgery on his shoulder about a month ago, he hurt it playing hockey a couple of years ago and his shoulder and collar bone kept popping out. Port Elgin lost to the Linwood Jrs. but Linwood brought in Danny Martin from Elmira Expos for this game.)

ISC # 6 Midland Knocks Off # 4 Chicago/NY

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Midland upset by Owen Sound, then upsets Chicago/NY

The Midland Explorers, who have beefed up their roster for a run at the ISC World Title in 2010, while hosting the ISC World Tournament, showed fastball fans that they are prepared to compete, knocking off the #4 ranked Chicago/New York team at the Boulevard Lounge tournament at Midland. The tournament will conclude tomorrow.

Click here for the Midland-Chicago/NY box score.

Click Als Fastball logo for all of the results and box scores and schedule of games for Sunday.

The game was the marquee matchup on Saturday, pitting two of the three highest ranked teams in the tournament against each other. (The NY Gremlins are ranked #3). Midland’s Mike Joseph picked up the win over Sean Whitten, on loan to Chicago/NY from last week’s Best of the West winners, the California A’s.

The game was a see-saw battle with never more than a single run plated in an inning by either team. Midland took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th, but Chicago/NY rallied to send the game into extra innings, on a solo home run by Chicago/NY third baseman Wilson Cabrrera.

In the international tie breaker, Midland scored one in the top of the 8th, on a Dan Loney sacrifice fly, only to have Chicago/New York answer back with one of their own on an RBI single by Steve Mullaley.

Midland notched the eventual game winner in the top of the 9th to take a 4-3 lead on an RBI single by Midland first baseman Steve Roberts. The game ended in dramatic fashion, with pinch runner Jordan Taveras thrown out at the plate trying to tag up on a fly out to left fielder Dan Skillings.

Midland was not the only upset winner of the day. They themselves fell to a lower ranked team, the Owen Sound Junior Selects, 1-0 in a late afternoon game, in another extra inning affair, with the game winning run coming home on ground out to third base hit by Owen Sound’s Jared Clancy. Owen Sound entered the tournament at the #13 ranked team in the ISC rankings released earlier this week, while Midland was # 6.

No-No by Jeremy Manley

Another Michigan team, # 24 ranked Marshal Lightning, also delivered an upset, knocking off the #13 ranked Owen Sound Junior Selects, 2-1 behind the pitching of Sean Kelly. The Lightning played the #4 ranked Chicago/NY team tough, falling 1-0, with the game’s lone run coming home in the bottom of the 6th inning on a sac fly. Chicago/NY pitcher Jeremy Manley tossed a no-hitter against the Lightning, striking out 15 while walking none. The lone base runner for the Lightning was Adam Saylor, who reached on an error in the 4th.

In their first game of the tournament, on Friday night, the Lightning competed well against the #6 ranked host, the Midland Explorers, falling 4-1. A three run outburst in the 5th by Midland was the difference in that game. With two wins over higher ranked teams in recent weeks (#23 Ashland, 9-2 over Memorial Day), and now the win over #13 ranked Owen Sound, look for the Lightning to move up in the next set of rankings.

Kelso Klassic draws some of nation’s best

# 9 Ranked Decatur Pride Headlines Field of Teams

(click banner for original news story)

Klassic draws some of nation’s best
By Marty Mishow ~ Southeast Missourian

It’s not difficult to pick the favorite in the 26th annual Kelso Klassic.

Although there figure to be several other strong contenders, the Decatur (Ill.) Pride should be tough to beat as they try to defend their title.

“They’re ranked ninth in the world. They’re the real deal,” tournament media coordinator Jerry Wolsey said. “They’re the favorite, but we’ve got several other teams right behind them.”

The popular 14-team men’s fastpitch softball event begins Friday night on two fields at Kelso City Park.

There will be four games Friday, including host Kelso Fastpitch facing the Belleville (Ill.) Stallions at 8 p.m.

First-year participant West End Tavern of Altenburg, the other local entry, also plays opening night, against Lee’s Sports Falcons from Pickneyville, Ill., at 9:30 p.m.

The double-elimination tournament continues through Sunday, when it concludes with the 3 p.m. championship. An if-necessary title contest would follow.

“We expect another great tournament,” said Wolsey, a former Southeast Missouri State baseball player who competes for Kelso Fastpitch. “The tournament has continued to grow. It really is one of the top tournaments in the nation.

“When we kick this thing off Friday night, if the weather is good, we’ll have anywhere from 800 to 1,000 people here. It’s a big event for the community.”

Decatur went 5-0 in last year’s tournament, capped by an 8-0, five-inning run-rule win over Nokomis (Ill.) Bud Light for the title.

The Pride were a national fastpitch power, winning several national titles, before disbanding in 2001. They started a squad again last year and made their first Kelso Klassic appearance as a unit, although several of their players had participated in the tournament.

Decatur was led by its pitching staff last year, always the key in top-level fastpitch softball. The mound corps featured New Zealand natives Brent Stevenson and Jeremy Manley, who are expected back this week.

Manley, the 2009 tournament’s most valuable pitcher and regarded among the nation’s top hurlers, went 3-0 with two runs allowed and 36 strikeouts in 17 innings.

The veteran Stevenson, also among the nation’s premier hurlers, notched Decatur’s other two tournament wins by allowing just one run. He fired a two-hitter in the championship game.

“We always have a pretty good international flavor in the tournament,” Wolsey said. “Softball is really big in New Zealand.”

Two tournament entries are ranked among the world’s top 15 teams by the International Softball Congress, with Decatur ninth and Aurora (Ill.) Dolan & Murphy 15th.

“To be ranked in the top 15 in the world, they’re the real deal,” Wolsey said.

Another anticipated title contender is the Topeka (Kan.) Toros, the 2009 NAFA A-Major national champions.

Aurora and Topeka did not participate last year.

Nokomis also should be a threat after its strong showing in 2009. The squad dropped its tournament opener then posted six straight victories before falling to Decatur.

“Even though Decatur is the favorite, right behind them are Aurora and Topeka. And Nokomis is always strong,” Wolsey said. “Altenburg should have a good team with Jeff Schott, one of the all-time great pitchers in the tournament.”

Schott is first all-time in tournament games played while also ranking high on most of the tournament’s other all-time records lists.

Kelso Fastpitch went 1-2 a year ago, losing to Decatur 5-1, beating Elkville (Ill.) 8-6 and losing to Nokomis 4-3.

“We’re always very competitive and we have one of the nation’s top pitchers in Tom Jansen,” Wolsey said.

Jansen ranks high on the tournament’s all-time pitching records lists.
