Mexicali

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Speaking of the G-man, he’s with Santa Cecila, Mexico this weekend at the Mexicali Tournament.

Gerald reports:

Sta.Cecilia defeats Copa Dum on a walkoff grand slam to win 6-4!:) Pyle and Avery combined 4 hitter. But we each gave up mammoth home runs!:)

Editor’s note: Arturo Soto was the player that hit the walk-off grand-slam.

Pyle and Avery are teammates during the regular season on Rude Pac, which plays in the SCIFL. Avery, a 22 year old pitcher from Nova Scotia joins Travis Price as a Canadian transplant playing in Southern California. Bonus points if you can name another.
send your guess to jim (at) fastpitchwest.com

We hope to have more to report by Sunday.

Mexicali is located on the USA/Mexico border, in Baja California, Mexico, a couple of hours east of San Diego (on the road towards Yuma, Arizona. ) Mexicali has had men’s fastball for some time now, with teams coming north to play in Southern California tournaments, as well as hosting the annual Mexicali/Copa Dum tournament, dating back to (at least) the 1990’s. In 1998, when I pitched in it, I found the reason the teams keep coming back – great hospitality in the town.

Led by pitcher Panfilo Valdez, the Mexicali team had a good run at the AAU International tournament a few years back, finishing second in 2004 to Los Socios, Venezuela, and third in 2005. Valdez pitched with the So Cal Bombers in their early days, about the same time period. So Cal fans will recall the original Mexicali teams organized by Craig Kodama, who ran a produce ranch in the Mexicali-Calexico area. So Cal pitchers discovered the secret to those strong hitting teams — a pitching machine on the ranch getting plenty of work.

Passing of Southern California pitcher Les Riley

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

From Dave Blackburn:

It is with deep sadness that I report to the Fastpitch community of the untimely passing of long time Southern california fastpitch pitcher Lester Charles Riley. Lester was known on the field by one of two nicknames, and he was always either called Les, or Moe, by his team mates, and his opponents.

It was reported to me by my Teammate Dave DeMaio that Les entered the 8:30 PM game for the Burbank Roofing Team at Robert Gross Park on Wednesday night. to pitch the third inning, Les was entering in relief of Gerald Pyle. After the third inning was over, Les came back to the dugout and allegedly complained of feeling light-headed. Les then suddenly collapsed, and he did not regain conciousness. Paramedics attempted to revive him, and he was rushed to St Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank. He was pronounced dead some time around 10 PM PST, to a stunned group of family, friends, teammates and softball buddies. He will be deeply missed by the sport.

It was opening night of the Spring / Summer session of the City of Burbank men’s fastpitch League. Les had been a stalwart pitcher in the Burbank and Los Angeles Municipal fastpitch Leagues for decades. I personally had been competing against Les since the 1980s, and I have definitely pitch more games against Les, through the years, than any other pitcher. He was a great battler, and universally well-liked by everyone he came in contact with.

I had played in the earlier game on the same field. I had left the park, just before the time of the tragic incident. But I did say hello to Les, as I was exiting the First base dugout, as he was entering. I joked with Les for a moment, and laughingly said that “in this league, we would be probably be throwing our 350th game against each other”. He laughed, I wished him well. Little did I know that it would be the last time I would ever speak to him. Please keep Les Riley and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Info on Funeral and Memorial Services pending.

Rudy Montanez, Jr. (Founder/manager of Rude Pac) adds his thoughts:

I am sad to report that the Fast Pitch community in Southern California has lost a great friend. On Wednesday Night the 5th of May 2010 Lester Riley Affectionately known as Moe, was rushed to the hospital from Gross Park in Burbank where he was playing with his Wednesday Night Fast Pitch Team. Moe was later pronounced dead at Saint Joseph Medical Center. Moe has been involved with fast pitch in Southern California for over 25 years. He has played on the Tournament circuit for many years. Though not as much recently. Moe has been a fixture in the Burbank City league for many years.

Moe’s passion and love for the game of fast pitch was not just for the game itself but for the people that played it as well. Which is why Moe had the respect of all us who have played with or against him. I know that Moe played with many team over the past years. Here are only a couple of the team names that I believe Moe has played with in the past years, All American, Rayco, So Cal Masters, Burbank Roofing (AKA Burbank) and I’m proud to say even appeared with Rude Pac Fast Pitch.

Moe was a man who I greatly admired and who taught me a lot about the game. He was one of those guys who helped me improve as a player and once I went blind was one of the first one to tell me to stay involved in the game. I’m proud to say that Lester Riley was one of my best friends at the ball park. It makes me sad to think he won’t be there anymore and I am proud too have known him. My Love Thoughts and Prayers go out to Moe’s teammates and especially his family. May you rest in peace my good friend.

2010 ISC Midland Trivia Question

The question:

2010 ISC World Tournament In 2009, two players held the record for most ISC Tournaments played in. With an appearance in 2010, one of those players will hold the record himself – 27 World Tournaments!! Can you name them both?

The folks in Midland are doing a great job of promoting this year’s ISC World Tournament. We encourage you to become a fan of the Facebook page, and keep up with all of the news coming out of Midland in the run-up to the tournament.

(Chilly) Cinco de Mayo at Albuquerque

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Cinco De Mayo, Alb NM

Maybe this year it should have been the “Chilly de Mayo”. Cold weather was the name of the weekend.
With temperatures in the 40’s the 11 team field opened up the Summer season in the Southwest.
The Third annual Cinco de Mayo was different because of the weather but the results were the same.

This years Champion was 3 time champion “the Wolfpack” from Las Cruces NM. The Tourney was
called on Sunday afternoon With only the Championship game Left to play. With the weather in the low 40’s
and a wind chill in the 30’s the Tournamet was stopped after discussions with the last two teams involved.
The weather was 40 degrees below the average and injuries were mounting. Both Teams agreed that stopping
play was the best thing to do.

Tourney MVP, Tony Mancha Pitched and Hit the Wolfpack to the undefeated position of the tournament. The
Wolfpack had Tournament victories over the Ray’s Auto Bulls and to Albuquerques 2nd to None, Waiting for
the Championship game the Wolfpack watched. 2nd to None defeat the Ray’s Auto Bulls in the third place
game 9-1..All Tournament Pticher Harold Redhouse had ptiched the 2nd to None to three tournament victories.
The Ray’s Auto Bulls had a very nice Tournament losing their frst game and working through 5 loser bracket
games to finish 3rd. The Tournament Directors (Joe Baca) Alb. Risers had their Highest Finish ever at 4th Place.
WIth the Wolfpack undefeated and 2nd to None with one lose it was a team and tournament decision to stop
play and rain, sleet and cold weather prevailed.

Although Mother Nature had the advantage this weekend it was a great start for all the teams involved.
