LAS VEGAS ROAD TRIP III

Happy Holidays, NAFA and SCIFL are announcing the third edition of the “Las Vegas Road Trip” men’s fast pitch tournament. The date of this tournament will be April 9th, 10th and 11th. Games will start on Friday afternoon at Sunset Park after 1:00 PM with the hope of having the games completed by 8:00PM Friday night and 9:00 PM on Saturday night. This is to allow the players and their families to enjoy Las Vegas. Championship games will be scheduled for 3:00 PM on Sunday.

Temperatures in Sin City the past two years have been very favorable, with temperatures being in the low 80’s. This will be a NAFA sanctioned event with the participating teams separated in the following divisions:

A
A-Major/AA (depending on amount of teams)
AA/AA-Major (depending on the amount of teams)

The splits in the higher classifications will be based on the amount of teams that enter. It is anticipated that 36 teams can be accommodated for this event and confirmation into the tournament will be based on the entry fee and roster being received. Last year there were about six teams that were not able to get in as the tournament filled up by mid-February. Please do not delay in getting back to me if your team will be entering into the event. Once the tournament is full, teams providing their entry fee will be placed on a waiting list and entered if any teams drop out or if additional fields are available.

The entry fee for the tournament is $400 and the NAFA 3-game guarantee bracket will be used for all divisions. It is open to all fast pitch teams and if your team has not yet paid their NAFA registration fee, there will be an additional $20 fee which will be forwarded to your State Director. With a minimum of eight (8) teams in a division, the winner will have their 2009 NAFA World Series entry fee paid for the division they played in. Also, to help keep tournament costs down, if your team books at least five (5) rooms and stays at our host hotel, Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, you will receive $25 back on your entry fee. Booking will need to be done using the 800 number and code provided in this message, rooms booked any other way cannot be confirmed through the hotel and are not used toward our count.

Team interested in playing should contact Robert Hernandez at rmh323 (at) roadrunner.com or 714-392-1387. All teams will need to submit a roster listing all their players with their entry fee. Checks can be made out to “SCIFL” and forwarded to Robert Hernandez, P.O. Box 1891, Anaheim, CA 92815-1891. Teams will be entered into the event in order of receipt of entry fees.

The host hotel for the tournament once again will be Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, providing rooms for the third year in a row. We have negotiated a very reasonable rate for the teams if you use the 800 number to book. The hotel is nice for the teams as the rooms are set up in a dorm type setting and being able to talk or hang out with each other is very easy. Arizona Charlie’s Boulder offers a casino, buffet and sit down dining along with live music in the downtown bar/lounge. Please help the tournament by booking with Arizona Charlie’s using their 800 number to receive the special rate. The number is 800-362-4040 and the reference code is C-SCIFL or mention So Cal Independent Fast Pitch League.

Room rates:
Fri/Sat – $44 per night plus taxes for either a standard room or suite
Thur & Sun – $29 per night plus taxes for a standard room or suite
Please note that the suites will be available on a first come first served basis

These rates are by far the best that we received for similar type hotels during this time frame, most were well in the $100+ range per night. Rooms will be included in the block until March 9, 2010 so please do not delay in reserving your room. We will not be negotiating with another hotel, so once the hotel is booked or the cut off date has passed you will need to make your own accommodation’s. Last year there were a number of teams that waited until the last couple of weeks to book their rooms and the hotel did not have any more to give. At the time of booking you will be charged first night of your stay with the reminder of days being charged upon check-in. Roll-outs are available for an additional $10 per night.

Arizona Charlie’s Boulder is located 7 miles from the parks but the money saved on the rooms will be a plus for teams compared to some of the other quotes that have been received. Teams can also save at the buffet by joining the casino player program when they arrive to check in.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this tournament. I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas.

1st Annual Maccabi USA Invitational fast pitch Tournament – Dec 5 at Long Beach CA

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Thanks to Larry Silfen and Dave Blackburn for this info:

Welcome to the 1st Annual Maccabi USA Invitational fast pitch Tournament.

Many of us play on teams together in Burbank, Sherman Oaks and Tournaments throughout the year and have become close friends. This Tournament is to thank the participating teams for helping the U.S.A. “Open” and “Masters” teams prepare
for The 18th World Maccabiah Games in Israel this past July, and give you some background on the Maccabi USA program.

The Maccabiah games take place every 4 years in Israel and are the Jewish version of the Olympics. Players try out from all over the United States and two teams (“Open” and “Masters”) are selected to represent the United States in competition
versus teams from countries like Venezuela, Canada, Mexico and Israel. The Team USA rosters include many Division one baseball players from schools like Indiana (also played in “high” Minor Leagues) USC, Ohio State, Northwestern and the University of Hartford.

This past July in the 18th World Maccabi Games Team USA finished second to Canada in the “Open” competition, and beat Canada for the Gold in the “Master’s “ competition, which is a 35-and-over event.

The experience of representing the U.S.A. and getting to see Israel is something many of us will never forget. While we strive to win Gold medals, the Maccabi experience is as much about the journey as it is the final destination.

We plan on making this invitational tournament a yearly event, and hope that all of the teams we invited here today, will join us year after year.

Happy Holidays to all and best of luck to all of the Teams.

Below are the directions to the El Dorado Park Softball Fields in Long Beach, location of the first Maccabi USA Fastpitch Invitational Tournament, on Sat Dec 5.

Attached are two images from Google Earth of the Park and the surrounding area.

The park lies just north of the Intersection of the 405 and the 605 Freeways. It is a huge complex, that includes a
Golf course to the North and to the South of the Softball fields.

From the LA area…

TAKING THE 405 FWY SOUTHBOUND

If taking the 405 Fwy South, take it south to the 605 Fwy North. Take the first exit which is Katella Avenue / Willow Street.

Willow Street and Katella Avenue are the same road, but it is called Katella Avenue east of the 605, and Willow Street West of the 605.

Go West on Willow Street to Studebaker Road. Go right on Studebaker Road to the first right which is the driveway into the El Dorado Park complex.

When you come to a “T”, take a right, and then a quick left into the softball fields parking lot.

FROM THE 605 SOUTHBOUND

If taking the 605 south, exit at Spring Strret, and go right (West)

Go West on Spring Street to Studebaker Road. Go Left on Studebaker Road to the first left past Barrios Street,

That left is a driveway into the El Dorado Park complex. When you come to a “T”, take a right,
and then a quick left into the softball fields parking lot.

If coming from San Diego or anywhere south of Long Beach,

FROM THE 405 NORTHBOUND

If taking the 405 Fwy North, take it to the 605 Fwy North. Take the first exit which is Katella Avenue / Willow Street.

Willow Street and Katella Avenue are the same road, but it is called Katella Avenue east of the 605 Fwy, and Willow Street West of the 605 Fwy.

Go West on Willow Street to Studebaker Road. Go right on Studebaker Road to the first right which is the driveway into the El Dorado Park complex.

When you come to a “T”, take a right, and then a quick left into the softball fields parking lot.

Editor’s note:
El Dorado Park is a large regional park, but the ballfields are pretty much right smack in the middle. The section of the park that you want is bounded by Willow on the south, Spring on the North, Studebaker Road on the east and the 605 freeway on the west. Follow the little road in from the STUDEBAKER side, [the “A” on the Google map above] north of Willow. Zoom in on the map above and you’ll see the 4 diamond wagon wheel.

Nice to see a tournament so close to home again!

North Island Men’s Classic

O’Leary ponders Vikings success

FIRED UP: Fast Pitch pitcher Mario Herbert fires one in as back stop Matt Williams keeps his eye on the toe of the bat in the game against Hutt Valley yesterday during the North Island Men’s Classic at Akina Park, Hastings.

SportToday had to question Joe O’Leary’s wisdom in the wake of his decision to play in the weekend’s North Island Classic men’s softball tournament in Hastings.

After all, O’Leary’s Dodgers team didn’t enter the six-team event and his list of injuries isn’t exactly short.

“Take your pick … hamstring, ankle and shoulder,” replied O’Leary when quizzed on his injury tally.

“I was on crutches on Friday but threw them away so I could play,” said O’Leary who is back in the Bay after two seasons with the Wairarapa Giants side in the Hutt Valley competition.

“I couldn’t resist the temptation to play against some quality teams and particularly for Saints who my family have a strong association with,” said O’Leary, referring to the fact his late father Rob played for Saints in the late 1980s and early 90s.

The former Black Sox training squad member’s commitment paid off as he was last night named in the Central Vikings team to play in the National Fastpitch Championship in Christchurch from December 27-30.

It remains to be seen whether O’Leary, 31, who has represented Hawke’s Bay through the age groups to senior level will take a break and rid himself of his injuries before the showpiece of the domestic scene.

“I haven’t been able to take a spell because we don’t have that much depth at Dodgers. I’ll leave that call to Tom,” said O’Leary, pointing in the direction of his Dodgers and Central Vikings coach Tom Makea.

“It’s good to be back in the Bay playing for Tom as he put a lot of work in to me when I was young and there’s a good mix of experience and youth in the Vikings side,” said O’Leary.

He agreed it would be good for him and the Vikings if he could shake off his injuries and return to the form which had him close to selection for the 2004 World Series. O’Leary’s injuries restricted his success with the bat but he managed an automatic home run for Saints as they were beaten 11-6 by his former Giants side in yesterday’s plate final at the classic.

Top Hawke’s Bay side Fast Pitch again did the best of the three Hawke’s Bay teams in the Classic with a third placing.

Hutt Valley Dodgers beat Johnsonville 6-1 in yesterday’s championship final. Former Maraenui Pumas and Hawke’s Bay age group players Mark and Jason Kelleher played for the Hutt Valley Dodgers side which lost 6-3 to Johnsonville in their first outing on Saturday but were unbeaten from then on.

Hutt Valley Dodgers second baseman Tyson Byrne, who gained International Softball Congress team selection earlier this year, was the Classic’s top batter with an average of 565. Former Hawke’s Bay and Junior Black Sox catcher Campbell Makea played for Johnsonville.

Excitement building for ISC World Tournament

Monday, November 30th, 2009

By John Kennett
jkennett (at) mdn.net

With over 20,000 people expected to descend on Midland next Aug. 14-21 for the 2010 International Softball Congress World Championships, planning is paramount.

Fortunately, co-chairs Kyle Beane and Dave Lach of the host Midland Explorers Booster Club feel they have preparations well in hand.

“We’re in a pretty good spot,” said Beane, who plays for the Midland Explorers and is a product analyst for the General Motors Service and Parts Operation.

Two area hotels, the Midland Resort and Convention Center and the Valley Plaza Resort, have been chosen as the host hotels for the tournament.

“We’ll need a lot of meeting room space fro the ISC to conduct their business,” said Lach. “For instance, on Sunday morning (of the tournament), the ISC will hold a Hall of Fame breakfast for over 300 guests at the Valley Plaza.”

Along with the two host hotels, the H Hotel has agreed to be a partner while Sports Junction has signed on to be the tournament’s souvenir vendor.

With over $2 million expected to be pumped into the local economy, the host committee is raising the initial $30,000 of organizational money.

“Right now, we’re in the fundraising mode,” said Beane. “We’re contacting local businesses for funds. We want this to benefit the whole community.”

The process to hold next year’s tournament began over a year ago at the 2008 ISC World Championships in Kimberly, Wis.

“Typically, the host city is chosen two years prior by a bid process,” said Beane. “At Kimberly, nobody came forward for 2010, so we started talking to the ISC about hosting.”

After receiving details from the ISC about hosting the tournament, and then processing the information, the decision was made to move ahead with pursuing the 2010 tournament.

“We contacted the Midland Parks and (Recreation Department) along with the (Midland) Chamber of Commerce, and everyone was firmly behind it,” said Beane. “A verbal agreement was reached with the ISC late last year, and the contract was signed in July.”

Lach is impressed with the way the community has backed up its initial commitment.

“The openness and enthusiasm from the local community has been great,” said Lach, who works for Nexteer Automotive of Saginaw as a senior systems engineer. “Any business we’ve approached has given us a tremendous response. The (Midland) City Council, along with the (Midland) Parks and Rec, have provided us with everything we’ve needed. It’s been very rewarding to see everyone pull together.”

One change that fans will see in the 2010 ISC is the absence of perennial power The Farm Tavern of Madison, Wis. After 34 years and three World Championships, sponsor Rod Peterson decided to retire and disband the team.

“There was not a better sponsor than Rod,” said Beane. “I’m sorry to see him go.”

With the closure of The Farm, the Midland Explorers become the ISC team with the longest continuous sponsorship.

“We’ve been at every ISC Championship since 1987,” said Beane. “That’s 23 years. It really speaks highly of guys like Lefty Bartos and Lee Isenhart, who started the Explorers.”

August’s event will actually consist of three separate tournaments: the ISC Men’s Fast Pitch Tournament, ISC II Tournament of Champions, and the ISC Development Tournament (under-19).

All the games will take place at either Emerson Park or the Redcoat Softball Complex. The Explorers will be entered in the ISC Men’s Fast Pitch Tournament along with the best teams in the world.

“It’s kind of like the majors versus Triple-A,” said Beane of the difference between the ISC Men’s Fast Pitch Tournament and the ISC II Tournament. “The Fast Pitch Tournament has better players.”

Last year’s ISC Men’s Fast Pitch Championships drew 24 teams, while the ISC II Tournament had 40 teams.

“I expect there to be a real solid group of 20 teams this year in the Fast Pitch Tournament,” said Beane. “Due to some teams folding up, some of the (ISC) II teams will move up.”

With the re-signing of star pitcher Brian Urquhart, Beane expects the Explorers to have another strong showing after finishing ninth at the 2009 ISC, where Urquhart was named to the All-World Team.

“We’re trying to find another pitcher to go with Brian,” said Beane. “This time of year is when players typically move to other teams. We would like to make the Explorers as strong as we can, so we can make a deep run in this year’s tournament.”

AAU International 2010 – New Host Hotel

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

(Updated with new link for website of host hotel)

AAU International 2010 – New Host Hotel
Friday, October 9, 2009
Orlando, Florida

January 21-24, 2010

Here is what the AAU International looks like so far…

40 teams have submitted an ” Intent to participate ” form and there are seven teams on the waiting list..
** The 40 teams that have submitted the form are not automatically in. Teams are not officially in the tournament until they pay their entry fee… Teams that fails to make the payment on time will lose their spot.

I would also like to let every one know that team registration and coaches meeting will be held at a different hotel this year.

I would like to encourage teams to stay at this hotel that is really helping me keep up with expenses without having to raise
the entry fee.

Rates are excellent and rooms are pretty big… Three swimming pools, bar and even a softball field on back of the hotel. I am including a brochure for the hotel in every package I am mailing out to teams today.
