Sr. Canadians Fastpitch championship round robin finals today

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The marathon has now become a sprint as the 10-team Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship heads into today’s final day of round-robin action at the Central Field complex in Charlottetown.

The defending champion Kitchener Rivershark Twins of Ontario have clinched a top-four finish and a double life in the playoffs, which open Friday. Kitchener improved to 7-0 with wins of 8-0 in five innings over the Glace Bay Mets of Nova Scotia, and 2-1 in eight innings over Blackburn Transport of Halifax.

Newfoundland and Labrador entries Three Cheers Pub (6-1) and West Side Charlies (5-2) have clinched playoff berths, as have the host Gahan House Bud Light Fawcetts (6-2) and Owen Sound Selects of Ontario (4-3). Three of those clubs will round out the top four. No team has been eliminated from the playoff picture.

Minnie Miñoso

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Some of you may have heard me mention Minnie Miñoso, a favorite ballplayer of mine. Born in Cuba in 1925, Minnie’s real name was Saturnino Orestes Armas Miñoso Arrieta (you can see why he adopted a shorter name). He was a standout in the Negro Leagues, and later played in Mexico as well, before making it to the major leagues.

Minnie is known by White Sox and baseball fans for many things, but probably best of all for being one of only two players in major league history to play in five decades. He broke into the majors in 1949, and went on to play in each successive decade, into the 1980’s. He was also the last Major Leaguer to have played in the 1940s to play a Major League game. With brief appearances with the independent Northern League’s St. Paul Saints in 1993 and 2003, Miñoso is the only player to have played professionally in 7 different decades.

The Editor, trying to sneak one past the henhouse, at Corona, CA last Saturday.

This past weekend, when I dusted off my glove and laced up my cleats, I thought of Minnie. Thanks to an invite from Ernie Marez, I had the chance to pitch for the So Cal Rebels in a local tournament, the Raymond Angulo Memorial Tournament, in Corona, California. It was my only appearance of the year, as was the case last year, due to a troublesome shoulder. Having started pitching fastball at the ripe old age of 9, pitching Saturday meant I have played in six different decades. (played IN, not FOR six) Admittedly, it’s not major league or professional ball, but watch out, Minnie, I’m right behind you.

An alert reader noted that “played in six decades” doesn’t translate to 60+ years.

Getting back out to the field reminded me why we all play the game. It’s many things — the competition, the battle to advance in a tournament, putting your skills to the test, seeing old friends. But for me, it’s the camraderie of teammates, and a game that is just plain fun.

Raymond Angulo Memorial Tournament – Corona

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

From Maddy’s Photo Blog:

This past weekend I went to the Raymond Angulo Memorial Tournament hosted by Ernie Marez and the So Cal Rebels, Corona, California.

Each year this tournament helps raise money for 8-year old Joseph Raymond Angulo, a little boy who suffers from cerebral palsy. It is our hope that we can continue the fundraising by giving the proceeds from the sale of the photos from the tournament gallery to the Angulo family.

So, if you have a few minutes, and some spare change, we urge you to purchase one of the photos and we will send 100% of the profits to the family. All you have to do is click HERE and make your purchase.

Editor’s note: We heartily encourage you to support this worthy endeavor. For an earlier newspaper story about young Joseph, click here.

Saskatchewan’s Ethier pitching for host Fawcetts

[Charlottetown, PEI] – There’s one obvious thing that stands out when looking at the schedule for the 2010 Canadian senior men’s fast pitch championship underway in Charlottetown.
That being a lack of teams entered in the tournament from west of Ontario.

But that doesn’t mean provinces like British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are not being represented.

“All players from the current Canadian national team are here,” said Trent Birt, chair of the tournament’s host committee.

“We certainly have (western Canadian talent) dispersed among eastern teams for sure.”
The lack of teams west of Ontario is mainly due to the costs involved in sending teams to the Island.

Tournament notes from Bruce Hackett, via Facebook:

Big Johns of Lackawanna are the 2010 Elkland ESA II level first weekend champions. Behind the pitching and hitting of Gregg Garrity Big Johns defeated the pa power 6 to 1 in the championship game Sunday night. we had a great crowd of people on hand to watch some very good competition all weekend long.My apologies for not getting the scores out over the weekend but we have no Internet at the ballpark and games got behind schedule so I got home a little late both nights.

Here is the top 3 finishing teams for this years tournament

First place-Big Johns, Lackawanna NY $1,000.00
Second place- Pa Power,Harrisburg Pa $ 500.00
Third place- ESA Bellys, Elkland Pa $300.00

Most valuable pitcher- Gregg Garrity – Big Johns 4 and 0 with 1 save

The Elkland softball association would like to thank all the teams that participated this year and we are looking forward to next years ESA II level tournament.

The Gahan House Bud Lights Fawcetts are 1-1 after the opening day of the 10-team Canadian senior men’s fast pitch championship at the Central fields in Charlottetown.

The Fawcetts rode some timely hitting to a 5-1 decision over the Glace Bay Mets of Nova Scotia in the opener, but were beaten 10-3 in five innings by the defending champion Kitchener Rivershark Twins of Ontario in the marquee game of the evening in front of an estimated 1,800 fans.

Fawcetts coach Doug Hines had already forgotten about the setback to Kitchener while his troops were packing up after the loss.

“It’s a long week and you have to have a short memory,’’ Hines said. “We’ve got to come back (today) and get two wins.

“It’s a nine-game round-robin and not too many teams are going to come in and dominate from Game 1 to Game 9.’’

The hosts take on the Owen Sound Selects of Ontario today at 1 p.m., then square off with the Fredericton Coors Light Twins at 6:30 p.m.
