A Look at the 2005 Roster & Schedule for JRW & Associates from Yakima, WA

Friday, May 13th, 2005

Here’s the roster and schedule for JRW & Associates, which finished 10th in last year’s ISC II Tournament of Champions. The pitching staff includes longtime Northwest pitchers Dave Drotzman, and the ageless wonder, Mike Trotter, still bringing it at age 65. (For someone that just turned 50, he offers a bit of hope and lot of inspiration.) Former Portland player Paul Reyes and pitcher Matt Barnes return to the Northwest to strengthen the JRW roster for 2005. Reyes played most recently with Team Rainey, while Barnes had been in semi-retirement in California.

Around Town, May 11

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

Team Rainey rallied from 3 down to tie the Long Beach Black Sox in the final inning in the Artesia City League Wednesday night. Dee Nieblas had a key two out, two run single, after Dwayne Fowler received an intentional pass to load the bases. Team Rainey stranded the go ahead run at third, ending the inning with the score tied. The Black Sox loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the final inning, but did not score. It was starter Rod Rainey pitching himself out of trouble. (Yes, you read that right, pitcher Rod Rainey! Not bad for a guy rehabbing from shoulder surgery). Rainey’s centerfielder Roy Guinaldo ran down a towering drive off the bat of Fred Hanker for the final out.

Selection to Canadian Jr. Men’s tryout ‘Opportunity of a lifetime’

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

Another in a continuing series from Pat Healey, Marketing Consultant, ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championships (June 24-July 3, 2005)

Sill, Thomas among four N.S. softball players trying out

BROOKFIELD, N.S. – A pair of Nova Scotian star softball players with the East Hants High Tide hope to make good on an ‘opportunity of a lifetime’. Bobby Sill of Birch Hill, near Brookfield and Steve Thomas of Hardwoodlands, near Milford are heading to the Canadian Jr. Men’s Softball team tryout camp with the intent of making the team and playing before family and friends at the ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championships June 24 to July 3 in Summerside. Sill, who comes from Birch Hill, just outside Brookfield in central Nova Scotia, is among three Nova Scotians selected to the 30-man tryout roster for the Canadian Jr. Men’s team that will represent the country as hosts of the ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championship in Summerside, PEI from June 24 to July 3. He showed people what he can do at last year’s Canadian Midget Boy’s Nationals in Summerside, as he flashed both his glove and bat for the East Hants High Tide.

Donnelly Archibald of Aspen utility player Tyler Hawes of Popes Harbour, who played QMJHL hockey with the PEI Rocket and pitcher Steve Thomas of Hardwoodlands, near Milford, were the other Nova Scotians selected to the camp. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime…not too many guys get a chance like this,” Sill said in an interview Sunday night. “I’m honored to be one of the 30 invited to the tryout camp.” The tournament will likely be the first and only chance that Sill’s friends and family will get to see him play this year as he leaves next week for Western Canada after signing a deal with a team run by Tom Taylor in British Columbia. Team Canada will hold a selection camp June 10-15 at the University of Waterloo before heading for two full days of training in Halifax, N.S. June 16-18 and then arrive in Summerside June 20. “All I could do was smile,” Sill, 19, said recalling his reaction when he was informed he had made the selection roster. Sill, a goalie with the Brookfield Elks of the Nova Scotia Jr. B Hockey League has had a tight schedule training wise with hockey in the picture. “Hockey has helped to keep me in shape.” His routine includes going to the gym, three days a week and running, and he has recently started in the gym with the Nova Scotia Canada Games softball team. After Sill’s hockey season ended with the Elks, the Maritime Jr. A Hockey League’s Truro Bearcats called him up, and he helped backstop the Bearcats to the league championship as backup goalie. Because of his commitment to ball, Sill is unable to play with Truro at the Fred Page Cup Eastern Canadian Hockey Championships hosted by the Yarmouth Mariners this week. Sill, a Grade 12 student at South Colchester Academy, suited up with the Brookfield Elks of the Coca Cola Major Fastball League in 2004, which featured teams from Halifax Keith’s, Antigonish Jr’s, Kinkora (PEI) Hitmen and Brookfield. “I’m hoping to do well at camp, hit the ball well and play solid defense,” the outfielder-third basemen added. “I don’t want to disappoint them.” An added bonus for Sill is this year’s ISF tournament location – in Summerside, P.E.I. “That’s great,” Sill added when asked about the location of the event. “It makes it easier for my family and friends to come over and watch me play. That’s why I want to make the team, not to mention to play before a
hometown pro-Canadian crowd.”

THOMAS ‘SURPRISED’ TO MAKE TEAM

Steve Thomas was surprised at his selection, but at the same time ‘thrilled and excited.’ “I didn’t think with the amount of good pitchers in Canada that I’d ever get an invite,” he said. The 19 year-old pitcher will be going into an electrical course at NSCC in the fall, and will not be doing what many of his former teammates are. Sill and fellow Canadian tryout players Mark Lewis and Jonathan Kane, both from Newfoundland and Labrador, are going west to play ball, but Thomas is staying home. He will be suiting up for the Nova Scotia Canada Games squad, which is a combination of the High Tide and Musqudobit Harbour Mariners. Thomas believes last year’s Canadian Midget Boys Fast Pitch Nationals helped in his selection to the tryout camp.

“If you have one good tournament that definitely helps,” Thomas said. “If you perform when everyone (scouts) is around, then you’ll get noticed.” “That’s what it all comes down to – playing and performing in the big games.” Thoams who works on a dairy farm has been doing cardio workouts, training in the gym, pitching and practicing with the Nova Scotia Canada Games team in preparation for the June 10-15 camp at the University of Waterloo. “It’s nice that the games are in Summerside, but it would have also been nice to go to another country,” said Thomas.

Archibald prepared for Jr. Men’s tryout camp

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

(Another player profile from Pat Healey, Marketing Consultant, ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championships, which run from June 24-July 3, 2005 on Prince Edward Island)

ASPEN, N.S. – Donnelly Archibald is going to be one busy athlete this summer. Between playing ball with the Nova Scotia Canada Games softball team, trying out for the Canadian Jr. Men’s team and preparing for camp in August with the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Archibald isn’t going to have any spare time. But that’s just how the 17-year-old St. Mary’s Academy student likes it. Archibald is one of five Nova Scotians selected to the Canadian Jr. Men’s team tryout camp at the University of Waterloo to make the team that will compete at the ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championship June 24 to July 3 in Summerside. “I like to know exactly what I am doing and when,” the Aspen, N.S. resident. “I’m excited for this chance to represent my country (if I make the team) at such an international event that will be close to home.”

Others include P.E.I. Rocket forward Tyler Hawes of Popes Harbour; Marine Drive Hitmen’s Cory Avery of Larry’s River; Bobby Sill of Birch Hill, near Brookfield and Steve Thomas of Hardwoodlands. “I think it’s great and an honour to have been selected to the camp,” he added. “Hopefully we can bring home the gold, especially if I make the team.” Archibald pitched with the Marine Drive Hitmen (N.S.) at the 2004 Canadian Midget Boy’s Fast Pitch Nationals in Summerside and Alberton. He thinks that is where the majority of the team was scouted. The hard throwing right-hander is also involved in volleyball and golf and has awards for Outstanding Junior Male Athlete and Highest Academic

Standing Senior Male by St. Mary’s Academy in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia. He played Major Midget hockey the past two winters with the Pictou County Weeks Construction of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League. Archibald doesn’t expect getting a spot on the final roster will be easy for anyone, especially on the slab as a pitcher. “I’ll have to be at my best to even make the squad,” he said. The excitement was clear in Archibald’s voice with just over a month to go before the team meets for a five day camp at the University of Waterloo from June 10-15 before moving to Greenwood, N.S. for six days of training before the world championship in Summerside. “I’m expecting the crowds to be huge, especially for the games where Canada plays,” he added. ”

My family is planning on going over if I am lucky enough to make the team.” He will be training for hockey and ball at the same time, and the Canada Games overlaps into the training camp for the Olympiques, as well. He also is going to work on the side with his father cutting pulp wood, so Donnelly says he can “work whenever I have a spare minute or two.” “It was a shock,” he said, recalling when he found out he had been selected. “I didn’t even know they were considering me for the team.”

Leinenkugel Legends Added to our TEAMS page

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

We’ve added another team to our “Teams” page, the Leinenkugel Legends from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The Legends will be the host team for the ISC II Tournament of Champions, August 15-19, 2005, at Chippewa Falls, WI. Chippewa Falls is the home to the famous “Leinenkugel Brewery”, a stone’s throw from the ballpark. In addition to the brewery tour, you can visit the “Leine’s Lodge”,which hosts their free tasting room. (I was there in 2003 for the NAFA World Series, and, speaking from personal experience, would highly recomment a visit, (especially that tasting room)

If you would like to be added to the “TEAMS” page at fastpitchwest (either a link to your own site, or for us to create a page for your team), click the email link on the TEAMS page. Teams come and teams go, and website addresses change, so if your page or link is out of date, be sure to let us know. We’ll be updating all summer long. If you would like your own page and menu button at the teams page, a roster and schedule is a good starting point.

Brothers look to lead Danes to Jr. Men’s Softball Championship Title

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

From Pat Healey, Marketing and Media Consultant for the ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championship

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK – The Denmark Jr. Men’s Softball team will bring, not one, but two sets of brothers to the ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championship on June 24 to July 3 in Summerside. Robin(19) and Niklas(15) Frederiksen and Frederik(18) and Valdemar(14) Brask Terkelsen are the two brother contingents on the Danish team. The team is headed by the latter’s father, Jens Terkelsen. A third Frederiksen, Camilo, who is 15 years old, plays on the team, also, but is no relation to Robin and Niklas. Frederik and Valdemar however, will be making it a true family affair with father Jens at the helm as the team’s head coach. Frederik, the “star” of the team, was a regular on a senior men’s national team at the young age of 18. He spent the past season in New Zealand, playing with Porirua – one of that country’s top senior men’s fast pitch squads, alongside players such as Thomas Makea and Jarred Martini. The youngest player on the team, Valdemar, is years ahead of many at his age in North America. He recently showed off his talents while making his debut with Denmark’s best men’s league team. Valdemar hopes one of his sightseeing trips, when not playing ball here on PEI, will be a trip to the hockey rink. That’s because his friend, Slava Trukhno, is a P.E.I. Rocket star rookie. Valdemar hopes the 10 days of games will be good to the Danish team. “I am hoping that I play well, see some good softball and gain a lot of playing experience,” he said. Having his father as coach is the norm for Valdemar, as Jen is also Valdemar’s club team’s coach as well. “It’s pretty cool, but I don’t think about it much,” he added. “I’m looking forward to the World Championship, but I’m not excited yet.” Valdemar has been to world softball championships before, but as a spectator when Jens represented Denmark at a Senior Men’s World.

Valdemar knows he’ll have to earn a spot to be part of the starting nine. “I guess being the youngest means I have to fight even more for a spot on the starting lineup,” Valdemar said. He is hoping that Denmark will perform exceptionally well, and even leave a “Denmark never quits” attitude in the mindset of their opposition. Also looking towards the ISF 2005 Junior Men’s World Championship in Summerside, PEI is Frederik. “I’m looking forward to the Jr Men’s and hoping to leave an impression on the North American softball scene,” Frederik said. For him, it will be ball as usual, as his Dad has always been his coach. “I’m happy that Denmark is in the tournament,” he said. “I hope to do well myself and be one of the better players in the tournament.” Frederik feels with 6 weeks to go before the games open, it’s too early to get excited, so he doesn’t have any “butterflies” yet. Coming to the tournament, Frederik knows he’ll be seeing lots of game action; in every game Denmark plays he is set to start. “Our other “big” pitcher couldn’t make the trip, so I know I will have to pitch all our games,” he added. “I pitch on my club team, so I practice pitching regularly.” Another reason Frederick wants to do well, is he wouldn’t mind staying behind or returning to Canada should a scout “spot him”. “I hope the team will do well in our games,” Frederik said. “I wouldn’t mind if I was “spotted” by a Canadian team – it could be fun to play in Canada/USA some day.” When asked about fans, in particular female fans, Valdemar and Frederik differ. One says he won’t be distracted, while the other remarks, it would be nice to see them out at the games. “I’m not used to that here in Denmark,” Frederik said, “but at the U-19 European Championship there were lots of girls around and that worked out just fine!.” “That sounds nice, but I am coming to play softball,” Valdemar interjected.
