From Al’s Fastball: Grand Island NE, Dinsdale/Quick Memorial Tournament Sunday Results

The Pueblo Bandits came into Grand Island Nebraska and won the Dinsdale/Quick Memorial Tournament by beating 2 of the top 10 teams in the world. In the first game of the championship round for Pueblo they defeated Kegel Black Knights and then took out the Defending World Champion Broken Bow Spirit in the second game. Jeremy Manley won both games Sunday and had the game winning double to put up the winning run against Broken Bow. If the tournament gave out an MVP Jeremy would have won it hands down. Congratulations to Pueblo for winning the tournament.

Report from David Blackburn, from Israel for 17th World Maccabiah Games

Wednesday, July 13th, 2005

A report from David Blackburn, who is in Isreal at the Maccabiah Games:

I made it to the 17th World Maccabiah Opening Ceremonies, 5 minute Highlight Video that is now available on the web.
Go to:
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/1,7340,L-3111180,00.html

There is an embedded 5 minute long Flash Video on the page. I am shown just after Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, and Mark Spitz, at somewhere around the 2:10 minute mark, as the 5 minute video clock counts down.

The Maccabi USA currently 5-0, after the round one of the 10 game double round robin schedule for the 6 teams competing. Results are on our team web site built by our left fielder Dan Winnick, who also plays for the Casa Trejo Bombers. http://www.maccabiusafastpitch.com

The Jerusalem Post Web Site also has photos at the following page.

Vancouver Grey Sox Sign Rob Giesbrecht for Canadian Nationals

Wednesday, July 13th, 2005

Vancouver, BC-

The Vancouver Grey Sox are pleased to announce that OF/IF Rob Giesbrecht will be joining us for the Canadian National Championship in St. Thomas, Ontario, August 28-Sept 4, 2005.

Giesbrecht hails from Landmark, Manitoba, but that Province is apparently not sending a representative to the Nationals, so we have added Rob as one of three allowed out-of-province residents on the roster. The balance of the Grey Sox lineup will consist of BC residents.

Rob has been a starting OF the last 3 years with Broken Bow, and was a member of the Canadian National Team that struck Gold at the Pan American Games in 2003. Giesbrecht is widely regarded as an exceptional all-around player, with great speed, a strong arm, and the ability to hit for average and power from the left side. Giesbrecht says he has not yet won a Canadian Championship and is excited to have the opportunity to pursue that goal with the Grey Sox. Vancouver’s Field Manager John Stuart say he is very happy to add Giesbrecht to the club, as the Nationals are known to be a marathon, and a versatile player with Rob’s proven top-flight abilities will provide many extra lineup options for the skipper.

Badger Roofing wins Men’s 50-Over Fast Pitch National
7/12/2005

Prescott, Ariz.—It took an “Iron Man” effort by pitcher Lonnie Brooks for Badger Roofing to take the ASA Men’s 50-Over Fast Pitch National Championship title. Brooks pitched four consecutive games on Sunday to lead the hometown favorite to its first ASA National Championship title.

Badger Roofing cruised into the final day of the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record after posting wins over the Houston Texans (Houston, Texas) 5-1, R&W Plumbing (Stockton, Calif.) 9-2 and the Darrow Concrete Raiders (Mt. Horeb, Wis.) 11-3.

On Sunday morning, Badger Roofing was shell shocked in its first game after getting drilled by the Clearwater Pride (Clearwater, Fla.) 10-2. The men from Prescott, who had only allowed six runs total in its first three games before meeting up with the Pride, found themselves in the loser’s bracket fighting to stay in the tournament. The loss meant Badger Roofing would have to win three consecutive games back-to-back-to-back if it hoped to win the title.

A 12-1 win over the Southern California Masters (Lancaster, Calif.) put the team back on track and into the finals against the same team that had run-ruled it earlier in the day. This time the fortunes were turned as Badger Roofing run-ruled the Clearwater Pride, 12-2, to force the “if” game.

With the hometown crowd cheering them on, the hometown favorite edged the Pride 6-5 to win its first National Championship title.

Brooks was named as the Most Outstanding Pitcher of the tournament after

pitching all seven games for the National Champions. Badger second baseman Mike Perez was named as the MVP while Deadwood’s Alan Rohrback was named as the top hitter.

Seven players from the national champion roster were named as first team ASA All-Americans including catcher Eric Maiden, first baseman Mike Cowen, shortstop Luis Acuna, outfielder Paul Rosthenhausler, utlity John Emmitt, pitcher Lonnie Brooks and second baseman Mike Perez.

Dale Lopes, Black Sox Respond to ASA Controversy

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

Dale Lopes of the Long Beach Black has posted a response to the ASA in regards to the controversial call in this past weekend’s So Cal ASA Alliance tournament.

To read the So Cal ASA website statement on the controversy, click here.

In response to the statement posted at the Cal ASA website, Lopes stated:

“Players have a duty for proper sportsmanship, but that does not give umpires the right to confront players. In the letter it states I was asked repeatedly by my team to leave the field and that was not the case at all. They as I do deserve to know why the call was made and a proper explanation of the call and we got neither.

In my opinion if you are going to hold players to a certain standard of conduct than the umpires in return should be held to that same standard. To whoever wrote this article, if you are going to call out names of players involved in this incident, and you are using their names in a negative aspect, you should also name the umpires involved and sign your name to this article.”
