Vancouver Grey Sox Stay Hot, Run Record to 31-4-1

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

Vancouver, BC

GAME 1 Vancouver Grey Sox 3-7-0 Vancouver Meralomas 0-4-1
WP- Rick Smith (11 K’s)
LP- Derek Mayson

The Sox scored a single in the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth. The Meralomas loaded the bases in the first with two scratch singles, but Smith worked out of it and was in command the rest of the way. CF Scott Newitt tallied the first run and went two for three with a double and a walk to lead the Sox offence.

GAME 2 Grey Sox 3-6-0 Meralomas 2-3-2
WP- Nick Underhill (11 K’s)
LP- Mike Egerdeen

The teams traded runs until the seventh when Scott Newitt dashed home on an Evan Potskin single to end a tight game. Potskin had a pair of hits and Derek Mayson slugged an RBI triple for the Lomas.

GAME 3 Grey Sox 5-7-0 Meralomas 0-2-1
WP- Rick Smith (10 K’s)
LP- Derek Mayson

Potskin scored single runs in the first and third to give the Sox an early lead. DP Bryan Mayson delivered a three run homer in the bottom of the sixth to salt away the win. Once again Smith shut out the opposition.

GAME 4 Grey Sox 13-15-2 Meralomas 4-1-2
WP – Nick Underhill LP – Dean Webster

A six run uprising by the Grey Sox in the second inning put the game out of reach early. The Sox pounded out 15 hits in a ragged affair. C Kris Waverick and SS Kevin Schellenberg drilled homers while OF’s Jeff Kawaguchi and Potskin each had 3 hits.

The Grey Sox 2005 record is now 31-4-1. We will be off for the next two weekends while several players participate in a training camp for the Canadian National Team.

Next action is the Vancouver Challenge Tournament July 29-31, featuring Broken Bow, Saskatoon Aspen Black Sox, Calgary Smokers, the Grey Sox, Prince George Black Bears, and Van City. Conrad Margolis, Vancouver Grey Sox From: “Conrad Margolis” conradmargolis@telus.net

Stars of the ISC (II) – 2004 MVP Jeremy Creeden

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

Stars of the I.S.C. – – – – – July, 2005

(A Tribute to the Past, Present, and Emerging Stars of the Sport of Fastball)

JEREMY CREEDEN – – – Wind him up and he starts hitting!

He’s back!!!

And he will be a potent force to reckon with – – – again – – – in 2005 international tourney action.

Who is “He”? He is JEREMY CREEDEN. And his potent bat will be in action as the Harriston, Ontario, Mercurys return to ISC – II Tournament of Champions action in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The Mercurys will be defending the title which they won in both 2004 and 2003.

And Creeden? He’ll be ready to take up where he left off last season when he was voted the ISC – II Tournament of Champions’ “MOST VALUABLE PLAYER” in leading his team to the 2004 title.

The 27-year-old Creeden hit a blistering .370 with a home run and six RBI as his team swept to eight straight wins and the 2004 championship in Fargo/Moorhead. He was already in the ISC – II record book, being among the all-time leaders in “Most hits in a tournament” from his 2003 performance with Harriston.

It isn’t hard to understand how Creeden got attached to ball fields at an early age. His home in Wingham, Ontario, was just three houses from the town ball park. So young Jeremy started early with “T” ball action with the kids of his town.

That action on the diamond stopped at age 12 when his family moved to a cottage on Lake Huron. It resumed by age 16 when he turned to fastball again, traveling to Wroxeter to play third base in a Midget program with the Wroxeter Rippers. That move came since there was no Midget team in Wingham and he had buddies playing in Wroxeter.

It was at that point that an injury wrecked the shoulder of his throwing arm and he moved from third base to the role of DH – – – a position in the batting order he has occupied ever since.

Young Jeremy’s athletic adventures weren’t limited to fastball. In high school he played soccer for four years. He also excelled on the track team for four years – – being a member of his school’s record-setting 4 X 100 relay team. And of course hockey entered his life early (Creeden IS Canadian you understand!) When his family moved to that cottage on Lake Huron, he started playing hockey year round – – even in summer time! That love led him to play one year of hockey in high school before moving to Junior hockey action.

It was as a hockey player that Jeremy picked up the nickname “Billy” and it has stuck with him.

In “real life” Jeremy Creeden is a General Machinist/Tool & Die Maker. Engaged to Andrea Johnston, he now lives in Teeswater, ON., just a few clicks north of his native Wingham. When he is not on a ball field, he enjoys hunting, fishing, and golfing. It is likely that he hits a softball better than a golf ball since he describes his golf handicap as simply “high”.

Creeden admits to having been “shocked” at receiving the MVP award last August in Fargo, but he readily chooses that award as representing his career highlight. He noted that he didn’t expect such an honor since he only hit during the tournament (as a DH) and did not play a position in the field. It was not his first time to be selected the MVP of fastball action, since he has won two separate MVP awards in the Bluewater Fastball League back home.

Jeremy credits an early coach, Bob Pegg, as being the person he most models himself after, describing Pegg as “the total Charlie Hustle” type person.

Looking back over unique experiences in fastball, he cites traveling to play in both ISC Under 19 and Under 23 tournaments, praising his experiences in Frankenmuth, MI.

Pressed to identify his favorite playing venues, he quickly chose the main fields in Kimberly and Fargo where his Mercurys captured those two ISC – II Tournament of Champions titles.

So, get ready Chippewa Falls! Jeremy Creeden is just counting the days until he can step into the batter’s box.

That’s Jeremy Creeden, our July, 2005, STAR OF THE I.S.C.

ASA National Tournament Berth Decided Amidst Controversy

Monday, July 11th, 2005

With Rude-Pac clinching one of two berths on the line at the So Cal ASA Association tournament, RAW and the Black Sox played a wild one that was tied going into the ninth inning. After RAW took a two run lead in the top of the 9th, John Otte advanced from second to third with no outs. A controversial call led to three Black Sox ejections, and eventually, to the umpires declaring RAW the winner by forfeit.

Deadwood’s Alan Rohrback Wins ASA 50+ Batting Title, Named Second Team All American

Monday, July 11th, 2005

Alan Rohrback, first baseman for the Long Beach Deadwood team that competed in the ASA 50+ Masters Nationals this past weekend in Prescott, Arizona, won the tournament batting title with a .625 average, and was also named ASA Second Team All American. The accomplishment was especially noteworthy, as Rohrback injured his knee sliding on the hard field at Pioneer Park in the first inning of the first game, while stealing a base.

After Deadwood’s win in their Friday night opener, Rohrback showed up for a 9am game Saturday morning, and could hardly walk. With a knee brace, and a bit of grit, he turned in performance Kirk Gibson would have been proud of. Rohrback was retired only twice in his first 10 at bats, showing the swing that won him ASA All American honors at the ASA Major level, and ISC All World honors, while a member of the 1983 ISC World Champion Lancaster Chamelons.

Far From Dead-wood

Friday, July 8th, 2005

The editor’s team, Long Beach Deadwood banged out 15 hits in their first ever ASA 50-and-over Masters Nationals game at Pioneer Park in Prescott, Arizona, an 8-0, 5 inning run rule victory over Buck’s Bombers of Illinois. Dan Zupp picked up the win, yielding only 4 hits in 4 innings and striking out 5. Deadwood scored 1 in the first, then exploded for 6 runs in the 4th, on 8 hits, and sending 11 men to the plate.

Alan Rohrback, former ISC All-World player for the 1983 ISC World Champion Lancaster Chameleons was 3 for 4, including a double over the center fielder’s head. Former Vista Bomber and Long Beach Nitehawk, Steve Miner, player-manager for Deadwood was 2 for 2, and on base four times, scored twice and drove in a run from the lead off spot to lead the way for the first year Deadwood team.

Deadwood will face the Clearwater Bombers at 9am Saturday morning. Clearwater is the new sponsor for a top finisher in the last two 50-and-overs, the Texas Stars, who finished second last year, and won the 50-and-over in 2003, the last time the tourament was in Prescott.

Barry Woolery was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, Dan Zupp, Jim Brundage and Steve Boyel were 2-for-3,

The tournament continues through the weekend, with the championship game slated for 3pm and a 5pm “if” game, Sunday.

Saturday morning update: Deadwood lost their second game of the tournament, 9-5 to the Clearwater Pride. The Pride is made up of most of the Texas Stars that won the 50+ two years ago and were runner-ups last year. Deadwood took a 4-1 lead into the 5th inning and appeared to be headed towards an upset, before a series of miscues proved to be their undoing. Deadwood did score a run in the 7th and had the bases loaded before the side was retired.

Saturday morning update #2: Deadwood bounced back from a loss in their 9am game, with a wild 14-10 win over the Houston Hawks. Deadwood trailed 6-3 early, but recovered to take a 14-8 lead, and 14-10 final.

Saturday afternoon update:With fatigue and the heat setting in, Deadwood was eliminated by the So Cal Masters, 8-3 at Rough Rider Park in Prescott. Ray Smith was the winning pitcher for the Masters, over Deadwood. Steve Miner drove in two runs with a double, while Dan Zupp had long triple to deep centerfield for the ‘Wood.

A first year 50+ team, Deadwood finished the tournament with a 2-2 record, and a tie for 9th place in the tournament. Their two losses were to the eventual 2nd and 3rd place teams, Clearwater Pride and the So Cal Masters.
