Fastpitchwest Forum member “Sledgehammer22” Once Again With the Inside Track on Rumors

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Once again, Fastpitchwest Forum member “Sledgehammer22” has the inside track on information regarding the upcoming ASA “C” Nationals, which apparently will feature a number of players on their way home from the ISC World Tournament. Says forum member “sledgehammer22”:

“My sources tell me that there are several A and open players pitching in the “C” nationals in Stockton. Reports show that Jason Porto has now signed on to pitch for the Painters of Fresno. Porto looks to be the number 6 in the rotation. Is this just a ploy by Jeff “The Doc” Coleman to keep a good pitcher off another team? Unidentified sources say no but Porto claims to have a mid 60’s downball and a Tony Peeples change-up. Could he really be the number 1 or 2? I doubt it. Other notable players signing on in the circle are Todd Garcia, Nor Cal Masters, Chris Wright, unidentified team, Jesse Duncan, Panteras, Nate Devine, California Crew, Troy Parker, Savala Painters Bakersfield. Only time will tell if these hitters can get it done in the circle. It’s a lot tougher than it looks.”

Hey, ‘hammer, I notice you left Rod Rainey’s name off the list. He’s in the regular rotation for a team in the Wednesday night Artesia league.

Sledgehammer22’s posts at the Fastpitchwest Forum generally garner the most page views over at the forum. Good at stirring the pot, you might say. If his current “page views” numbers hold for 2005, he will be in line for some “Fastpitchwest Gear”. (sorry, ‘hammer, the girl modeling the gear not included)

Here’s another post from “Sledgehammer22” where he takes Fastpitchwest webmaster Jim Flanagan to task for his tardy coverage of the So Cal Bombers at the ISC World Tournament:

Just a quick note on Southern California’s OTHER team. The So Cal Bombers are 3-0 at the ISC World Tournament. We have received great pitching from all three on the staff and timely hitting from some veteren players. It’s been a great atmosphere here as both teams from Cali have showed up at each other’s games and supported. It’s great how two rival teams during the year realize that we are representing Callifornia and show up for their friends to support the cause. I hope we get two teams in the next round. It would be Huge for California fastpitch. Maybe you’ll hear more at the morning brief??? Who knows.

Looks like the Sledgehammer’s line drives are not limited to the playing field. No word yet on whether there is any truth to the rumor that Sledgehammer22 has been asked by Fastpitchwest to serve as moderator of a new forum section called “The Rumor Mill”.

Waseda Univ of Japan Awaits Winner of NorCal Maverick/Lancaster, PA in NAFA Class AA World Series Winner’s Finale

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

The Northern California Mavericks won a wild one in the semi-finals, 5-4 with outfielder Jeff Reich making a game saving catch at the fence in the bottom of the 7th:

Nor Cal defeated New Image 5-4. Trailing by two outs in the top of the seventh, with runners on first and third, New Image batter Harvey Knutson hit a fly ball to centerfield. Nor Cal centerfielder Jeff Reich jumped to make a catch that carried him over the fence and would have been a walk-off homer for Knutson in the Fourth Place Game.

Fastball fans may recall that Jeff Reich made an identical play in the 2003 NAFA Class “AAA” World Series in a crucial game against a very strong RWP team from Minnesota. Lyons and RWP were tied when Reich made a leaping catch at and over the fence to prevent a walk off win for RWP. Lyons won the game in the 12th inning on a home run by Todd Garcia, and went on to win the NAFA “AAA” World Series that year. RWP had Team USA shortstop Chad Boom and pitcher Rick Lang that year, and many thought it was the best game of the “AAA” World Series.

Here is the excerpt from a story that appeared in Fastpitchwest’s recap of that 2003 catch by Reich:

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning when it appeared might be over on a walk-off home run with two outs by designated batter Brian Elliott. Lyons centerfielder Jeff Reich raced back – to the same spot that he watched the earlier home run by Scott McCleod leave the yard. Reaching the fence and out of room to run, Reich timed his leap at just the right moment, reaching as high as he could to snare the ball in his outstretched glove hand, doing a back flip, head over heels and landing on the other side of the portable fencing to snatch the win away from RWP

.

Deja vu, eh?

County Materials Rallies to Top Farm in ISC World Final

Saturday, August 20th, 2005

County Materials of Marathon WI rallied for 3 in the bottom of the 7th to tie the ISC World Championship game, then scored one in the bottom of the 8th to win the 2005 ISC World Championship at Eau Claire, WI.

The Farm took a 3-0 lead into the 7th inning, but a lead off walk and two home runs tied the game at 3. Donnie Hale hit the game tying home run, a monstrous tee shot that was estimated at 350 feet to left center field. Korrey Gorreau was relieved by Paul Algar after Gorreau surrendered the three runs and walked the next batter. Algar escaped a bases loaded jam with two 3-2 counts, before recording the last out of the inning on a low liner in the gap to left center by a diving Ryan Wolfe.

The Farm went three up and down in the top of the 8th inning, but County Materials put two on and scored the game winning run on a single by Ken Kiefel. Jarrad Martin singled to open the inning. After two strikeouts, a walk advanced Martin to second, before Kiefel’s game winning single to left.

The Farm’s Korrey Gorreau was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Pitcher, while Colin Abbott, also of the Farm was the Most Valuable pitcher.

The order of finish for the Final Four:

First place: County Materials, WI
Second place: The Farm Tavern, WI
Third place: Hallman Twins, ON, Canada
Fourth place: Circle Tap, WI
