Rounders, Rude Pac Win Again

Friday, September 2nd, 2005

Rounders, Rude Pac Among 16 Unbeatens; Amigos, RAW and Primetime to Play Elimination Games Saturday

The El Segundo Rounders, CA won their third game without a loss at the ASA “C” Nationals at Stockton, CA, a hard fought 8-5 win over a very good hitting A-1 Tank team. Rude Pac won their second game without a loss, a harrowing 9-8 win over Team Texas, who had beaten the Savala Painters in the first round. Both the Rounders and Rude Pac are among the 16 remaining unbeaten teams in the tournament and will play again tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. The Rounders will face Country Club Villa of Northern California at 4pm, while Rude Pac will play Black Oak Casino, which defeated RAW 12-9. The Black Oak Casino team features ISC World Tournament players Nate Devine and Mike Butler, who played for the So Cal Bombers during the 2005 season, finishing 10th in the world. Black Oak has scored 12 runs in each of their first two games, and reportedly hit 4 home runs in each game.

The Rounders scored 8 runs in the first three innings. The Rounders tallied 4 runs in the 2nd inning on consecutive hits from the 1-2-3 and 4 spots in their order, Erik Geierman, Michael Thomas, Mark Villalobos, capped by the home run by Linnell Culver — all coming after the first two batters in the inning were retired. A-1 scored their runs in the final three frames, to put the tying run on deck when the final out was recorded. Gerald Pyle went 5 strong innings, surrendering 1 run to pick up the win. All three Rounder pitchers have a win in the tournament thus far. Michael “Spanky” Thomas was 3 for 4, drove in 3 runs, and scored two while Linnell Culver was 2 for 4 with a two run single and 2 run homer, a tape measure shot that cleared the 300 foot slo pitch fence beyond the portable fencing at Regional Sports Complex. Mark Villalobos drove a run, while Erik Geierman was on base three times, with two hits and a walk, and scored two runs.

Primetime of San Diego lost a heartbreaker to Global Pacific, 7-5 on a walk off grand slam home run, and will return to play in the elimination bracket game tomorrow against Elk Grove, CA at 8am Saturday morning. A win would send them to Sunday, where they would need 4 wins to survive to Monday.

RAW will face Sports Club at 8am, and with a win, would also need to win 4 games to survive to Monday.

Tom Biko’s KHT Pumpers lost their first game today, 6-3 to Bay Area High Reach, and will play the (Long Beach) Savala Painters, CA, at 8am Saturday, who eliminated the Rose City Merchants, 2-1 today.

The pairings in the winner’s bracket (reading the bracket from top to bottom) look like this:

Amigos Oust Black Sox in Matchup of Alliance Teams at ASA “C” Nationals

Friday, September 2nd, 2005

The Amigos and Long Beach Black Sox came to Stockton with high hopes, finishing second and third, respectively in the tough So Cal Alliance league. The Black Sox were the only team to win more than one league tournament, winning three, including the last one of the year in July. When the manager’s draw was completed on Wednesday, they found themselves staring at the prospect of playing each other, in a second round winner’s bracket (if both won) or elimination bracket game (if both lost) Unfortunately for both clubs, it was the latter, as both teams suffered tough losses in their first games Thursday at the ASA “C” Nationals, against two strong opponents.

The Black Sox faced off against the Santa Rosa Storm, which finished third in two qualifying tournaments earlier, including the Memorial Weekend event won by McLaughlin Air and where the Rounders finished second. The Sox led 6-2 in the game but Santa Rose stormed back, and won the game, 8-7.

The Amigos faced the Nielson Gamblers, which finished 9th in last year’s 70 team ASA “C” Nationals in Nebraska, going 3-2. The Amigos came out on the short end of a 5-3 score against the Gamblers.

And so Friday morning, at 10am, the two teams, the Amigos and the Black Sox found themselves squaring off in an elimination bracket game. Gino Sarracho of the Amigos came up big, with two home runs and 5 RBI to carry the Amigos to the next round, and oust the Long Beach Black Sox from the tournament. Sarracho hit a three run shot in the third to stake his team to an early 4-1 lead, then crushed the Sox hopes in the 7th with a two run shot to extend the lead to 7-2. The Black Sox rallied in the 7th, loading the bases with one out, scoring one, but a fly out and ground out ended their season Friday morning.
