LANCASTER – LONG BEACH BLACK SOX AND RAS CONSTRUCTION CHAMPIONS

The Long Beach Black Sox used their two game bye to their advantage to take the Championship in the “B” Classification portion of the Lancaster tournament. This is the second May in a row that the Black Sox have won the May Lancaster tournament. After going 3 – 0 on Saturday in the Round Robin, the Sox had to go through the Champions in the previous two tournaments to take the crown. In their first game, they had came out ahead of Rude-Pac 5 – 4 and in the Championship game they beat the Panteras 8 – 5. The Panteras were making their third consecutive Championship game of the year with wins over the Rounders and San Diego Primetime. The players on the Panteras are used to being in the Championship game with a good portion of them being from the Kanakas and Edge teams from the 2003 & 2004 seasons.

While the Panteras have gotten greedy and not letting others in the Championship game, in the C Classification portion of the tournament here was once again two new teams making their first appearances. RAS Construction (formally Santana Concrete) came out of the sixth seed position in the round robin and used plenty of offense on Sunday to take home their first Championship since the 2003 National Qualifier. Budke Hits, Pitches Black Sox to #1 Seed at Lancaster

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

From the LB Black Sox website:
Long Beach Black Sox Top Seed at Lancaster, CA

Todd Budke is a world class player and today he proved he can also pitch when needed as he threw a complete game (6IP) and allowed only 2 earned runs in the Sox 9-4 win over The Amigos giving Long Beach the # 1 seed on Sunday. Budke allowed only 7 hits and 1 walk in the win. At the plate Todd was 1-2 with 2 walks and an RBI. Budke was pressed into duty when Randy Clay could not pitch due to his arm injury suffered earlier in the day. The Sox also brought out the bats again. Leadoff man Paul Rosebush continued his torid hitting going 3-4 with 2 runs. Andy Martinez followed suit going 4-4 with 2 runs. Fred Hanker was 2-4 with a run and RBI. Chris Minogue also stayed hot with a 3 run home run to brek the game open. Brett Semans was 3-3 with a run and a RBI. The Sox hit Amigo ace Anthony Martinez for 14 hits and 9 runs. The Sox now are guranteed at least third place and play at 11:30 versus the winner of 4 and 5.

Sledgehammer’s California Top 10

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

After a brief absence, Sledgehammer’s latest Top 10 rankings are posted at his “Rumor Central” section of the Fastpitchwest Forum.

A number of the teams listed — including the top two, So Cal Bombers and Rainey, will be in action this weekend. Stay tuned to see how the rankings hold up over the weekend. I’m sure the ‘hammer will weigh in after the weekend.

Here it is, straight from Sledgehammer:

“Well, here we are just a few weeks into the season and we already have some movers and shakers. The rankings have been a little quiet lately due to contract negotiations with several reporters and stat services but we finally have it. Please feel free to send me private messages with team accomplishments or stats that may get you in with the voters. Here it goes.

1. Casa Trejo Bombers- Love em or hate em, they rake, and they pitch. Red Rock power display only adds to their number one ranking. Albert Mendibles has been the early story as he has resurrected his career coming out of a two month retirement to spark the club with consistent at-bats. Mendibles was once a member of fastpitch powerhouse Decateur Pride.

2. Team Rainey- Not the performance we are used to seeing from this perennial winner at Red Rock but they did come away with a win over the Lumberkings, which solidified there number 2 ranking. It also appears they have added Todd Garcia to the lineup which gives them another veteran stick. When the international talent Gervasutti lands on American soil we will see Rainey in full force.
