2007 AAU Roster – St. Thomas Storm

Monday, January 8th, 2007

The St. Thomas Storm Fastball Club from Ontario, Canada is returning to Orlando to compete in the AAU International Fastpitch tournament.

This is the second trip to Florida for the Storm and they are looking to improve on last year’s finish, when they lost in the first round of the playoffs and finished with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses.

The team looks at the event as a nice mid winter vacation and a chance to compete against international teams who we don’t normally get to play against.

The Storm plays in the intermediate level St. Thomas and District league and feature many players with ISC experience.

Pitching this year consists of workhorse Trevor Wardell who was instrumental in helping the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials win back to back Canadian Sr. Men’s Championships. Also featured on the staff is Dan Beecroft, an underrated pitcher who has led the Storm to 2 straight league titles.

Several players on the roster also helped the Centennials and Storm to their titles including lead off man and shortstop Tyler Lessard, 2B Troy Rick and outfielders Chris Payne and Mark Coleman.

Argentine Pitcher Available

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

A young Argentine pitcher who pitched in the ISF Jr. Men’s competition in Canada in 2005 is looking to play for an ISC level team for the 2007 season. Teams interested in contacting him can email him at argentinepitcher (at) fastpitchwest (dot) com. The report we are receiving from another Argentine familiar with his talents says he is ready for prime time.

Remember that teams and players alike can post in the “Free Agent Central” section of the Fastpitchwest Forum, whether you are a team looking for a player, or a player looking for a team. Here is a sample post of the item for the young Argentine pitcher mentioned above. Be sure to include an email address or means of contact. If you prefer not to post your name or team name, we can post a fastpitchwest email address for you, and the emails will be forwarded to you via Fastpitchwest.

Most recently, the ISC II level team, the California Lumberkings posted in the “Free Agent Central” forum, looking for a middle infielder.

2007 AAU Roster – Florida Fastpitch

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

Looks like Dr. Larry and Steve Thurmer have put together another good roster for this month’s AAU International Tournament, an East Coast, West Coast, Midwest, Southern team with a Latin flavor. Coach Steve Thurmer is a St. Louis lawyer who played for the ISC World team, St. Louis GMAC for a number of years (and could still be playing according to some). Steve has a long history in fastpitch and the ISC — his father ran the St. Louis Browns team during the 1970’s. Dr. Larry Mastrogianakis is a longtime player and sponsor who always seems to land a talented group of players.

(the caption in Spanish says: Sebastian Gervasutti, of Argentina, one of the best pitchers at the Pan American Games, shown here with his bronze medal)

Gervasutti, Brown, Johnson, Palazzo, Darling, Gray, Brannin, Mastrogianakis and Felix all played on the ASA team that finished second at last year’s ASA Major National Tournament in South Bend, Indiana, with a 7-2 record, getting to the title game before falling to Circle Tap. Florida Fastpitch forced Circle Tap to the “if” game pounding out 16 hits and four homer enroute to a 15-3, five inning win in the first championship game. Florida Fastpitch has finished second in the last two ASA Major tournaments.

So Cal fans will recognize several of their players, including both members of their pitching staff — Sebastian Gervasutti (or “Seabass” as his teammates call him) is the young Argentine pitcher who pitched so well for Team Rainey in their final season, beating higher ranked teams along the way. Most recently, Sebastian pitched his home country’s team to a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Hermosillo, Mexico. He’ll team up at the AAU with Sonny Perkins, who pitched with last year’s AAU Champions, Team USA, and has also pitched for Team Rainey, as well as Albaugh, Iowa with fellow Team USA teammate Terry Luster. Another member of last year’s AAU champion will also join the Florida squad, Landy Rodriguez, who was recently named “Male Athlete of the Year” by USA Softball. Rodriguez, who hails from West Haverstraw, New York, had an outstanding 2006 AAU tournament, hitting .529 with five home runs, seven RBI and finishing near the top in MVP voting. So Cal Bomber fans will get a good look at Landy — he’s among the newest members of the 2007 team.

16.9 Million, and the Hits Just Keep on Coming

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

16,916,337 – that’s the number of “hits” at www.fastpitchwest.com during 2006. (that’s “hits” on the site, not at the plate)

From time to time, we hear people say that fastpitch is dying out, but the remarkable increase in traffic at Fastpitchwest suggests anything but. For those interested, here are some of the internet “traffic numbers” at Fastpitchwest over the past four (4) years.

Year Hits
2003 3,715,047
2004 10,764,048
2005 13,969,123
2006 16,916,337

Add to these numbers, more than a million hits over at Maddy’s Photo site, www.maddysphotos.com or roughly half million hits at Ballparkradio, www.ballparkradio.com in the last half of 2006, taking the trio to more than 18 million hits.

One of the best measurements of the growth is in what is referred to as “unique visitors”, which measures the number of different people (computers) visiting the site, as opposed to just the number of hits on the website. Those numbers have quadrupled since 2002.

Year Unique visitors
2003 39,441 annual/3,286 avg. per month
2004 77,641 annual/6,470 avg. per month
2005 106,023 annual/8,835 avg. per month
2006 160,186 annual/13,349 avg. per month

We humbly say “thank you” for your continued readership and loyalty.
