Editor’s notes: Albaugh, IA, or as many in So Cal refer to them, “Sonny’s team” [as in Sonny Perkins] is a team made up of largely mid-western players. Some major changes in the pitching staff for 2007, though as Team USA pitcher Terry Luster moves over to Houston. Sonny returns, along with Darren Dubsky, a hard thrower out of the midwest, while lefty Karl Gollan and veteran Doug Middleton join the club. Middleton, a Team USA player himself, sports a ISC World championship ring from 2002 with St. Joe Frontier Casino Players. Karl Gollan, is a New Zealander who was County Materials’ #3 last year, behind the 1-2 All Star duo of Andrew Kirkpatrick and Lucas Mata.

Hey Bob !

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

A shameless plug here for my brother Bob Flanagan, who is the GM for the Coastal Bend Aviators minor league baseball team in Corpus Christi, Texas. The official bio on the team’s website says this about Bob:

Bob is starting his fist year with the Coastal Bend Aviators and is in his fourteenth season of professional baseball. In his prior 13 years Bob has worked for ball clubs in Visalia, CA, Lubbock, TX, Florence, SC and Edinburg, TX. Bob says “Come out to the ballpark and see the difference a year can make.”

If you’re ever in Corpus Christi, be sure to look him up at the ballpark there. Click here to read Bob’s blog posts to his column called, simply enough “Hey Bob!”

(He’s younger by 3 years in case you’re wondering, as is his twin brother, Rick. They both claim to be better looking than I 😉 )

Red Rock Postscript from Bombers’ Website

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

From the So Cal Bombers team website, courtesy of Cesar Rodriguez:

2007 Red Rock Comments from Bombers Coach Kelly McGiffin:

From my perspective, it was a good tournament with a good outcome. Just as in 2006, Red Rock’s early competition is important because we have to work on getting at bats and getting innings in for our pitchers.

First and foremost we have to focus on the process in these early tournaments. Getting our work in, establishing how we will go about our business for the year, getting comfortable with one another; and all that was started through the weekend.

The team came together very well and even with a number of new faces, I think to a man, everyone just felt good about the group as a whole. There was a very comfortable feeling among the team members and while it’s hard to explain, it almost felt like we’d been together for a long time.

The newcomers to the Bombers performed very well and are obviously excellent additions. Adam Lalonde became our igniter right off the bat, Landy Rodriguez and Marc Santillano were strong and confident, and not only fit right in but produced some clutch hits. Evan Potskin had fun all weekend and was fun to be around, especially when knocking in some important runs for us in most of our games. And of course Sean Whitten and Darrell Tilley, threw smoke and smiles all tournament.

I think that key thing for me as the coach was that while the new guys fit in right away and performed well, our guys from last year seemed to step up their game too. Partly because they’ve worked hard over the winter, but also I think because we all have just a little more confidence in the group as a unit.

Our infield defense was amazing, I think we turned 6-7 double plays and Butler and Pinocchio put on a clinic up the middle while Santillano, Rodriguez, Devine and Parra all made sizzling plays on the corners. Our pitchers were amazed at the plays behind them and we know it will be one of our strengths.

To a man, all players were solid contributors this weekend, as a team we got some of the work we need to do started, and of course, to top it all off, we won the tournament by beating a very strong (and beefed up) team in the final two games, including some very good pitchers along the way. A good start to what looks to be a very fun season.

Colorado Classic Results – Longmont, CO

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

[Longmont,Colorado] – Rocky Mountain Fastpitch Association hosted the inaugural Colorado Classic tournament in Longmont over the weekend.

We had an 8 team field led by the Boulder Blaze who won their invitational two weeks ago in Frederick, Colorado. The Warriors, HealthTech, Lafayette Rebels, RB5X, Denver
Scoreboard, Dragons and the Fort Collins Fastpitch Club rounded out the field.

We did have touch and go thunderstorms throughout the weekend but the softball gods intervened and we only had to move one game saturday night until Sunday morning.

The Boulder Blaze behind the Father/Son pitching of Eddie Kosorok and Matt Kosorok and clutch play of tournament MVP Freddie Borra defeated The Fort Collins Fastpitch Club
in the If game 14-5 to win the weekend.

Final Standings.

Blaze 4-1
Ft Collins 4-2
HealthTech 2-2
Warriors 1-2
Dragons 2-2
Lafayette Rebels 1-2
RB5X 1-2
Scoreboard 0-3

This was the Second RMFA event held in Colorado this year as well as the second Wood Bat tourney. Everyone is seeing the upside of the switch and more tournaments have inquired into making the change. As was the Frederick Tournament, this was a NAFA Sanctioned event as well as a RMFA Qualifier for the Wood Bat National to be held in Boulder over Labor Day Weekend.
Thank You,
