Illinois Fastpitch – Dolan & Murphy’s

Shamrocks beat up on opponents, each other in victory

By John Sahly Staff Writer

Jason Iuli was actually happy to face his own team on Tuesday night.

The third pitcher for the Dolan and Murphy softball team took the opportunity to get some work in against a solid Shamrocks lineup while pitching for the ATMI softball team.

In pitching a complete game, Iuli took his lumps but said he pitched well in ATMI’s 7-0 loss to Dolan and Murphy, at Stuart Sports Complex to conclude the Aurora Fastpitch Softball Association’s showcase.

“I think this was a good chance for me to work on a few things before we go play a bunch of top-10 and top-15 teams,” Iuli said. “I think I pitched pretty well tonight.”

Iuli pitched for ATMI, a team largely considered to be a farm team for Dolan and Murphy, in order to keep the game competitive. That also gave Iuli an opportunity to lead a team consisting of players mostly under 21 years old against an older and more experienced team. He took full advantage of that opportunity after ATMI struck out five times in the first two innings.

Waterloo Region the place to be

By Christine Rivet

[KITCHENER, ONTARIO, CANADA] – In case you haven’t already heard, Waterloo Region is the centre of the fastball universe.

This, from promoter Duncan Matheson who — along with his volunteer army of fastball foot soldiers — will bring the men’s world club team championships to Kitchener for the second straight year.

“You got so many people around here that are fastball nuts. They put so much into the game because they love the game,” Matheson said at yesterday’s news conference which kicked off a season that will conclude with the International Softball Congress world tournament in Kitchener from Aug. 10-18.

For Halifax native Mark Smith, the head coach of the Canadian senior men’s fastball team, this area’s fastball talent, proximity to Toronto’s airport, world-class facilities and hospitality are hard to beat.

“All fastball roads lead you here,” said Smith, in town with the national team this week for a test series against the three-time defending world champs from New Zealand.

The Kiwis warmed up for that series last night in Tavistock, handing the Kitchener Hallman Twins a 13-3 defeat in the opening game of a doubleheader.

This summer, the ISC worlds, the granddaddy of senior men’s club team tournaments, will be held at Kitchener’s Peter Hallman Ball Yard for the third time in six years.

The ISCs also include an intermediate men’s competition (the Tournament of Champions) to be played in Kitchener and Cambridge, a youth tournament and a skills clinic.

Waterloo Region and area boasts a season piled high with premier fastball events, organizers said, including the recently-completed Legends of Fastball Classic in Woodstock.

New Zealand national team infielder Jarrad Martin knows first-hand how much this sport matters to local fans.

While wearing the uniform of the two-time ISC champion County Materials of Marathon, Wis., last summer, he felt the wrath of local spectators at the Hallman Ball Yards.

“Last year, we (County) weren’t on the best side of the fans at a lot of times. We had to deal with the adversity and the hostile crowds. But the sport has a great following here,” said Martin, 34, an electrician from New Plymouth, New Zealand

Named the 2006 ISCs most valuable player, Martin will make a return trip to Kitchener in August, for the 2007 ISC worlds, as a member of the Broken Bow Gremlins of Albany, N.Y.

Smith, who has repeatedly brought Team Canada to Kitchener for training camps, will also guide Nova Scotia’s under-19 girls squad to Kitchener-Waterloo next month to train.

ISC world tourney organizers said that more than 50,000 fans are expected to watch the nine-day tournaments in Kitchener and Cambridge. About $7 million will be injected into the local economy, they said.

Some 600 volunteers will devote 14,000 hours to hosting the ISC worlds and Tournament of Champions.

“It’s fastball fever. People are going crazy about the game,” said Matheson, the 2007 ISC tourney’s chair.

At last year’s ISC worlds, 47,000 fans attended. The tourney netted a profit of $82,000, shared with seven local non-profit groups.

Illinois – Terry Deering Tournament Enters 10th Year

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

From the Du Quoin Evening Call:
By Jeff Profitt/American News Service

The 10th Annual Terry Deering Memorial Fastpitch Tournament starts this week at two locations and runs through Sunday.

Eight teams are entered in the affair, which returns to a pool-play format after using the standard double-elimination bracket in 2006.

Started in 1998, the tournament honors late Illinois lawmaker and former fastpitch standout Terry Deering.

The Du Bois native was a longtime player and supporter of the game.

Southern Illinois Fastpitch League (SIFL) members Pete’s Blues/Alstat Firewood and Lumber (Belleville), Elkville Fastpitch, Makanda’s Davis Auto Center, Kuhnert Builders/Little Muddy (Elkville) and Scheller (Bauza Landscaping) make up over half the field.

From Central Illinois, Villa Grove (Log Cabin Inn) and Springfield’s Franny’s Ole Irish Pub are entered with Belleville Stallions from the metro east.

Wednesday night at 7:15, Scheller and Kuhnert Builders play at 7:15 in Elkville as part of the SIFL.

The first game of the scheduled twinbill will also count towards the Terry Deering standings.

Aurora Illinois Event Kicks Off

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

A night filled with softball

From the Beacon News
By John Sahly staff writer

The Aurora Fastpitch Softball Association teams don’t usually cross paths that often. So tonight’s kickoff event at Stuart Sports Complex will be something of an anomaly.

That’s because all seven teams will be playing tonight, either in exhibitions against one another or in competitive games against out-of-town teams. Association president Bill Pfeiffer said tonight presents an opportunity to everyone involved and the rest of the community.

“We get all of the teams together so they can all appreciate who else is involved,” Pfeiffer said. “The parents then can see the players on the other teams in our organization, and any other fastpitch fans can see what’s going on. The games are still going to be competitive and they mean something, but this is more of a fun thing that you can go out and just play.”

Most of the younger teams (12-and-under, 14U, 16U and 18U) will be playing the early part of their schedules because of schools recently letting out for the summer.

On the men’s side, the Dolan and Murphy Shamrocks (20-4) are off to a good start this season. The Shamrocks finished third in the Dick Tracy Tournament in Rockford and the Jack Grafmeier Tournament in Kimberly, Wis., earlier in the season, and will play the men’s 23-and-under team, ATMI Precast.

The Shamrocks play primarily in tournaments in preparation for the ASA National Tournament in South Bend, Ind. If Dolan and Murphy is to improve on last year’s 1-2 record in the national tournament, it may be because of two of its pitchers, Juan Potolicchio and Jonas Mach.

“With Juan and Jonas, we’ve got two mid-to-high level pitchers and they’ve been pretty good for us,” said coach Robin Raider.

One of the other benefits of bringing together experienced players for a showcase night is that it allows the younger teams in the AFSA system the chance to get to watch the older players in action.
