From USA Softball via

USA Softball Men’s National Team pick up two more wins at ISF Men’s World Cup, Now 7-0

USA blanks Prague Stars for seventh consecutive win

PRAGUE, CZ—The USA Softball Men’s National Team coasted to
a 10-0 five inningrun rule victory over the Prague Stars (1-4)
on Friday morning to remainundefeated at 7-0 in the ISF Men’s
World Cup. Three-home runs in just oneinning helped to propel
to Red, White and Blue to their fourth victory via therun-rule.

The USA pounded two Prague pitchers for 12hits including three
homers in a six-run third inning. Ales Jetmar was thelosing pitcher
and worked two innings, allowing six runs and eight hits.Right-hander
Petr Bednar replaced Jetmar after the USA hitconsecutive homers
(DeLarwell and DeGroat) in the third inning andfinished the game,
allowing four runs and four hits.

Chris DeLarwelle (Appleton, Wis.) opened the third with a solo
blast toleft field and catcher Frank DeGroat (Ringwood, N.J.)
followed with a solo homer to centerfield before Adam LaLonde
(Cheboygan, Mich.) sent a blast over the center field fencelater
in the inning for the USA’s first grand slam of the WorldCup.

It was the second home run of the game for DeLarwelle who helped
putthree runs on the board in the first inning with a solo shot.
DeGroat increasedhis home run total to four with his solo home
run while LaLonde broke into thehome run club with his first.
The three homers in the third inning increasedthe overall USAtotal
to 14 in just seven games.

Although it wasn’t the first time LaLonde has hit a grand slam
in hiscareer, it was the first grand slam for him in his six-year
career as a memberof the USA National Team. LaLonde had a pair
of singles in two earlier at-bats tofinish off a perfect day.
DeLarwelle also had a perfect day offensively going3-for-3 with
a single and two home runs.

Cody Thomson (Salt Lake City, Utah) hurled the first three innings
for the USA to pick uphis second win in the circle. During his
stint in the circle he allowed onlyone hit, one walk and fanned
two batters. Left-hander B.J. Hunhoff (Harrisburg, S.D.came in
from the bull pen in the fourth inning to finish off the game.
In twoinnings of work he did not allow a hit and struck out two.

The U.S. must nowturn its sights towards a showdown with undefeated
Venezuela later in the day. Thewinner will secure the top seed
going into the page playoffs on Saturday. Thelast time these
two teams met up was in October of 2006 at the Men’s PanAmerican
Championships in Hermosillo, Mexico where Venezueladismantled
the USA8-0, and allowed only one hit. The U.S.went on to finish
fourth while Venezuelafinished as the runner-up.

USA holds off Czech Republic toremain undefeated in ISF Men’s
World Cup

HAVLICKUV, BROD—Holding off a last inning rally by the Czech
Republic(1-4), the USA Softball Men’s National Team won its sixth
consecutivegame on Thursday, 6-4, to remain undefeated in the
ISF Men’s World Cup. TheU.S.improved to 6-0 in pool play which
concludes on Friday with a double-header.

For the first time in the tournament the U.S. found itself trailing
ina game when the Czech’s took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom
of thesecond inning but the Red, White and Blue came storming
back in the top of thefourth inning after a couple is costly
defensive miscues.

Frank DeGroat, Jr. (Ringwood N.J.) reached on a fielding errorby
the shortstop to lead off the inning and Mo Kandouse (Patterson,
N.J.) wasinserted to pinch-run. A trot would be the extent of
running Kandouse wouldhave to do as Nate Devine (Merced, Calif.)
blasted his second home run of the World Cup toleft field to
give the U.S.a 2-1 advantage.

The Czech Republic came back to tiethe game in the bottom of
the fourth inning. T. Benda led off the inning with asingle and
scored on a single by V. Svoboda coupled with an error by U.S.
right fielder Chris Miljavac (St. Joseph, Mo.

The USA regained thelead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning
on a solo homer by shortstop OmarMoraga (Agoura Hills, Calif.)
and an RBI single by Devine but thepesky Czech’s added a run
of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cutthe lead in half.

Two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, which proved
to bethe difference in the game, increased the U.S. lead to 6-3.
Moragaled off the inning with a double to center field and scored
on an RBI single byChris DeLarwelle (Appleton Wis.). With one
out in theinning, DeLarwelle stole second, advanced to third
on an error by the shortstopand scored on a wild pitch.

With their home town fans behind them, the Czech’s mounted a
comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. L. Prochazka led
off with a singleand advanced into scoring position on a wild
pitch. A walk to M. Cermakprompted Head Coach Peter Turner to
turn to his bull pen to put a stop to therally.

Sonny Perkins (St. Michael’s, Ariz.came in to relieve starter
Travis Price (Santa Ana, Calif.) with thewinning run coming to
the plate. D. Mertl greeted Perkins with a single toright field
that scored Prochazka but that would be all Perkins and the U.S.defense
would allow. A heads-up play by USAfirst baseman Nate Devine
(Merced, Calif.) turned a routine out into a double play when
hetook the throw from second baseman Blake Miller (Albany, Ga.and
laced it to third to pick-off the runner. Perkins wrapped up
his first savewith a strikeout to end the game.

Price picked up his third win of the World Cup, hurling 6 1/3
inningswith eight strikeouts. The USAand the Czech Republiceach
had eight hits apiece with Moraga and Devinleading the way with
three hits apiece for the USA.

The USA willcomplete the round robin portion of the World Cup

Watch for the results of a number of weekend tournaments coming up, including a number of World Tournament qualifiers. Its the results of these tournaments that give
ammunition to the rankers to vote on the teams.

The rankings will form the basis for seeding teams in the annual ISC World Tournament which will be played August 10-18 at Peter Hallman Ballyard in Kitchener, Ontario.

Editor’s notes:

“Big 5” is not a sporting goods store. Well, at least not in this context. The “Big 5”, Orillia, Patsys, Broken Bow, Hallman and the Farm stay put right where they were in the June 5 rankings. Monkton will be a great showcase — perhaps the one voters pay the most attention to, before the final seeding for the ISC World Tournament. Who gets hot that weekend could determine how these 5 get seeded..

Not a lot of movement – my quick review shows the MinnDak Millers of Minnesota the biggest mover – jumping 4 spots from # 10 to #6. Winning the Albaugh tournament was a good win, and fresh in the voter’s minds, I would think. From there, it’s a pretty big hill to climb, to get past the top 5 who kept their slots from the last set of rankings.

Aspen Interiors the biggest drop, 3 slots from # 6 to #9, though I confess I haven’t tracked their season to explain why. Perhaps just where they landed with a few others moving up on the strength of one tournament or another.

The Midland Explorers moved up 2 slots from #14 to #12, trading spots with Albaugh. I thought the win over # 4 Kitchener Hallman Twins in the Explorer’s tournament in June might bump them into the top 10, but it’s a crowded house. (They won a 13-7 slugfest in the championship game against Kitchener).

More parity among the top teams than we’ve seen in a while, perhaps a result of the PRAWN rule taking effect, so not a lot of (that ought to get me some emails from those who don’t like that rule). More teams with a legitimate chance of making it to the final than in recent years, I think. The last couple years, it seemed like a two or at best, three team race. How far down the list do you think it goes this year, i.e. how many of these teams have a legitimate chance ? ?(translation: you’re betting with your own money 😉 7? 8? 9? With the caveat, of course “if they got hot”. Or do you think it’s still a win, place and show field of 3-4 teams?

The So Cal Bombers stay right at # 7, winning the Red Rock tournament, but getting upset off by Larry Miller UT with Cody Thomson on the mound. The Bombers fared well enough at their own tournament in May, to hold their spot. They did knock off # 13 Portland again (also in Red Rock), but were beaten 10-2 by a lower ranked # 8 Circle Tap.

Vancouver drops from # 9 to #10, while Portland moves up from #15 to #13. I would have thought the ranking committee would pay more attention to the fact that Portland took 3 of 4 from Vancouver in Vancouver. And don’t take anything away from Vancouver, who is solid, but I thought Portland would move up above # 13. Vancouver for its part, was impressive in Palm Springs, shutting out #17 Pueblo and beating a higher ranked #8 Circle Tap in the final. The Rose Cup tournament this weekend should give us a better look at just where Vancouver and Portland stand with each other. Expect to see those two battling late in the day on Sunday, though they both have to get past higher ranked Broken Bow.

Quad City jumped from # 19 to #16. Any of our midwest readers know what might have sparked that? For the rest of the pack, just a slot or two up or down, here and there.

And so the dance continues, musical chairs, until the Big Show in August…….

Michigan Twisters Burst onto Fastpitch Scene

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Midland Daily News
By Greg Chalfin

There’s a new local fastpitch softball team taking the competition by storm. The Michigan Twisters — a brand new team with several Midlanders — broke into the International Softball Congress II rankings on Saturday, coming in at No. 30.

“We’re in our first year, and we’ve got a good squad,” catcher Neil Faccio said. “We’re starting to turn some heads.”

The team has started its inaugural campaign with three tournament victories, including a win in the ‘A’ division at Midland’s Boulevard Lounge tournament two weeks ago.

Faccio and five of his Midland-based teammates — Rick Engle, Seth Freed, Adam Osantowski, Ron Case and Matt Morgan — left locally operated Coppens Brigade to help form the new Twisters squad.

“It was kind of a bad leave (from Coppens Brigade),” Faccio said. “We were ready for a change.”

Former Coppens Brigade manager John Coppens was reached and opted not to comment about the state of his club at this time.

Faccio said he and his teammates were looking for an opportunity to play more often and against better competition and decided to join with some players looking to leave Roscommon’s Roofs of the North team. The team’s fast start — a 26-2 record thus far — has the team considering traveling to Kitchener, Ontario for the ISC II World Tournament. But the team will run into another Midland juggernaut this weekend.

Coming off two consecutive tournament victories, the Midland Explorers (14-3) return home for three exhibition games at Currie Stadium this weekend.

The Explorers started quickly last season but struggled after pitcher Doug Gillis suffered a midseason stroke. Midland finished 21-17-1 last year, marking its worst record in the history of the club.

“We just lost a lot of close games,” manager Clint Beane said. “For whatever reason.”

But the Explorers have come back strong this season, having won 11 of their past 12 games.

“When you get good pitching and good defense, the hitting usually comes around,” Beane said. “It’s been a really good start.”

On Saturday, the Explorers tangle with the Twisters at 5:30 p.m. before a nightcap against St. Thomas (Ont.) at 7:30 p.m.

The Explorers conclude play Sunday against Jarvis (Ont.) at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Berryhill traveling to Escanaba Tourney

Berryhill Post 165 manager Steve Cronkright’s ballclub heads to its first tournament of the season, playing Friday-Sunday in Escanaba. Last year, Berryhill won the tournament.

“But it wasn’t a cakewalk or anything like that,” Cronkright said. “There are some real tough teams.”

Berryhill will play four teams from Wisconsin in pool play, and its record in those games will determine if it makes the final four, which will be played Sunday.

“You could play up to six games,” Cronkright said. “And then drive six hours home.”

Ice continue NPF action Tuesday

Manager Tom Short’s Mid-Michigan Ice will travel to Rockford, Ill. next week for a four-game set with National Pro Fastpitch’s Rockford Thunder. The Ice have performed well in early-season competition, losing just once in six games.

Short said he’s been pleased with his pitching — which has already thrown two no-hitters — and defense in the early going and will use this weekend’s practices to get his offense on track.

“We’ve got to keep the sticks going,” Short said.

Lady Explorers look to bounce back

After losing its first three games against the Ice and the Venezuelan National Team, manager Mike Kozuch’s Midland Lady Explorers will try to rebound at this weekend’s Petoskey Mary Ingalls Memorial Tournament.

Midland will play a round robin format against four other teams, beginning with Kalamazoo’s Kam Hooters at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

“They’ve been kind of our big rival,” Kozuch said.

Upcoming area softball tournaments

Midland will host a number of softball tournaments during the summer, including the Chapman/Alexander tournament the weekend of July 13-14, the men’s slowpitch 50 and over “AAA” state tournament from July 20-22, the men’s fastpitch class “A” and “B” state tournaments from Aug. 3-5, the men’s modified class “B” state tournament from Aug. 10-12, and the men’s fastpitch class “D” state tournament from Aug. 31-Sept. 3.

Rain at World Cup in Prague

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

An update from our roving reporter and photographer in Prague, Bernie Lopez, at 12noon California time (nighttime in Prague):

Unfortunately, the Czech skies decided to pour down on the softball fields so a few games were cancelled. I personally left the field an hour ago, and unless it gets real hot in a hurry and the field crews can perform miracles, the much anticipated 8 P.M. match up between Venezuela vs Japan will have to wait. Team USA is still playing, as far as I know, at a field about 75 miles away. No news on weather there.

And here is the official word now, from Softball/CZ:

The rest of thursday schedule was cancelled at 7:00pm by Technical Committee decision because of bad weather conditions. Thursday evening games were moved to Saturday June 23rd. See SCHEDULE
