Brad Rona’s homer lifts Patsy’s to 4-3 win and Walsh/Madl title.

The Patsy’s men’s fastpitch team is officially considered to be from New York City.

But when you talk to many of the team’s stars, you won’t hear a Brooklyn, Bronx or Queens accent, nor will you hear anything close to resembling the Pennsylvania Dutch lingo commonly heard at Patriots Park.

That’s because Patsy’s, like most men’s softball juggernauts, are an international team and on Sunday it was a New Zealander and an Aussie who shined the brightest to help the team win the eighth annual Bob Walsh/Tom Madl Memorial Classic.

Against the Orillia River Sharks in the title game, Brad Rona, the New Zealander, hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a scoreless tie.

Then Adam Folkard, the tall, hard-throwing Aussie, gave up three runs in the top of the seventh, but escaped further damage for the 4-3 win, nailing down the first tournament title of the year for Patsy’s.

Vancouver Takes Two From Portland on Sunday

#10 Vancouver and # 12 Portland Split Four Game Series at Portland

[July 22, 2007 – Portland, Oregon] – After dropping a pair Saturday evening, the Vancouver Grey Sox came out playing hard, smart and together on Sunday taking both games of the double header to earn a split for the weekend in Portland. John Stuart changed his batting order, threw in some hit and run plays, bunted more and received some strong defense and execution from his players. Coach Stuart said they “needed these” after the games. I might add they earned it. Portland had their chances, but this was Vancouver’s day.

In the first game, Vancouver went up 2-0 in the first on an RBI triple by Derek Mayson who later scored on a wild pitch. Portland came back to tie it the second on a hard liner double by Rod Rainey which hit the top of the fence. The score was tied at 3-3, until Craig Halliday hit a two run double in the 6th inning for the Grey Sox. It was a long, long at-bat with several foul balls until Halliday hit what turned out to be the game winning rbi’s. Mike Piechnik threw well for Portland in defeat. A couple of miss played balls and a check swing call hurt the big lefty. But, it was Vancouver’s day. Nick Underhill picked up the win for the Canucks.

Game two had Derek Mayson shutting down the Portland offense except for a solo blast by Brian Ree in the sixth inning. Nick Underhill picked up the save throwing “gas” while striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh. Bryan Abrey hit a two run triple in the 4th to supply all the offense Vancouver needed. Bricklin Anderson threw well for Portland in defeat.

All in all it was a good weekend for both teams. The players all got some needed at-bats and the pitchers got their work in. While Portland leads the head to head play six games to three, anything can happen when these two Northwest powers play each other. Next weekend it is on to Vancover, BC for the Vancouver Challenge. Hope to see you there.

Thanks to the Vancouver Grey Sox for coming down to Portland this weekend and treating us to some good ball. Always a class act (almost always) and a pleasure to host.

Vancouver Grey Sox at Portland DeMarini – Erv Lind Stadium

Portland, Oregon – July 21, 2007

Portland DeMarini took the first two games of this 4 game super series against the Vancouver Grey Sox. Vancouver traveled down to Erv Lind Stadium in Portland for this second series of the season.

In game one, Mike “Peaches” Piechnik threw a perfect game for the host Portland club. Paul Reyes hit a two run walk-off homerun for Portland DeMarini. Nick Underhill shut down the Portland hitters for six innings before suffering a tough loss in the bottom of the seventh. The story of the night was “Peaches was perfect in Portland” winning 2-0.

In the second game, Bricklin Anderson shut down the Grey Sox winning 5-1. Kevin Rasmussen hit a two run homer to give Portland an early lead. Todd Garcia added a long solo shot a few innings later.

The teams resume the series tomorrow with games at 10am and noon. The two sets of 4 game series keep these two Northwest powers sharp between tournaments and helps them prepare for next weekends Vancouver Challenge and the ISC World tournament next month.

Nate Devine in the News

Friday, July 20th, 2007

From the Union Democrat in Northern California:

Devine’s big bat helps U.S. fastpitch team finish strong
Published: July 20, 2007
By KEVIN SAULS
The Union Democrat

Former Sonora resident Nate Devine had himself a time playing with the U.S. Men’s National Fastpitch Team in two major international tournaments.

He hit two home runs and posted a .385 batting average while helping the U.S. finish second in the Men’s World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic, and smacked two more homers and hit .350 as the Americans won the KFC World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City.

Devine, 30, played football and baseball at Sonora High School, from which he graduated in 1995. He played baseball at Modesto Junior College, Merced College and the University of La Verne, and spent a year playing independent professional baseball with the Johnstown (Pa.) Johnnies of the Frontier League before focusing his diamond energies on high-level fastpitch.

He has twice been named an Amateur Softball Association (ASA) All-American and twice has helped A and B division teams finish second in ASA national tournaments. He made the U.S. team during a selection camp in Chula Vista in May.

His international experience, Devine said, was divine.

“It was awesome being in the Czech Republic,” he said. “They think you’re superstars. There were 2- to 4,000 fans at every game and they were doing the wave and chanting and cheering for every play. They were going nuts.”

The U.S. beat the Czechs and also knocked off hotshot teams from Venezuela and Japan before losing to the Japanese in the championship game.

“When we played the Czechs it was a pretty hostile environment,” Devine said, “but it wasn’t mean.”

The U.S. avenged itself against Japan in the title game of the Oklahoma tournament, which was played in conjunction with the Women’s World Cup. The U.S. won that one, too.

Women rule in fastpitch.

“They scheduled our games after the women’s games so we could have some of the leftover crowd,” Devine said.

He started all but one game in the two tournaments and played in all of them as a first baseman, center fielder, left fielder of designated hitter.

Devine’s day job is as a business instructor at Merced College, where he also coaches pitching and hitting for the Blue Devil baseball team.

He plans to stay on the international fastpitch scene until the 2009 World Cup in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and perhaps into 2010.

The U.S.-Japan game from Oklahoma City will be televised at 10 a.m. Sunday on ESPN2.
