USA Tops Japan for ACS Title

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Chris DeLarwelle hit .333 with 12 RBI and two home runs in the American Challenge Series

From USAsoftball.com:

USA Men’s National Team takes home inaugural American Challenge Series title

Oklahoma City — USA Softball Men’s National Team won the inaugural KFC American Challenge Series on Sunday by defeating Japan 7-0 in the championship game.

Team USA rode the bat of Chris DeLarwelle (Forestville, Wisc.) to the championship. DeLarwelle went 2-3 with three RBI. For the tournament, DeLarwelle hit .333 with 12 RBI and two home runs.

“I saw that the umpires were giving the pitchers a bit on the outside of the plate,” DeLarwelle said. “So I adjusted and challenged the Japanese pitchers to pitch me on the outside half of the plate.”

DeLarwelle’s adjustment paid off when he blasted a two RBI single down the left-field line in the third inning to start the scoring for Team USA.

DeLarwelle, the MVP for the ISF Men’s World Cup last month in Prague, struck again in the fifth inning with an RBI single to centerfield.

“I had worked on hitting prior to Prague and continued so after I returned from the World Cup,” DeLarwelle said. “I found what worked for me and it helped me to be consistent.”

The win marked a reversal of fortune for Team USA against Japan. The Americans had lost four straight, including two in the ACS, before winning the championship game against them.

“We were trying to find a line-up that worked against Japan,” Coach Peter Turner said. “Plus, the more we play together, the better we get.”

Japan was never able to find a rhythm against pitcher Terry Luster (Bunceton, Mo.). He allowed only two hits in five innings of work.

“Terry just hit his spots and made it easy for me,” USA catcher Frank DeGroat Jr. (Ringwood, N.J.) said. “When a team like Japan has a lot of team speed and likes to bunt, you have to try and change the locations quite frequently.”

After taking the lead off DeLarwelle’s two RBI single in the third, Team USA struck again in the fourth. Sonny Perkins (St. Michaels, Ariz.) hit an RBI single to put them up by three.

Omar Moraga (Tucson, Ariz.) started things off in the fifth inning with an RBI triple. After an RBI single by DeLarwelle, DeGroat knocked in another run with a single. Nate Devine (Merced, Calif.) hit a walk off single that scored DeGroat from second to end the game after five innings due to the international run rule.

Team USA advanced to the championship game by surviving a late rally by Argentina during the play-in game earlier in the day.

Team USA started strong, jumping out to 11-3 lead after four innings, including a grand slam by DeLarwelle. However, Argentina had a six-run rally in the fifth to pull within two.

Argentina captured third place in the inaugural KFC American Challenge Series.

Dolan and Murphy reaches semifinals at AFSA Classic

July 15, 2007
By John Sahly Staff Writer

Dolan and Murphy starting pitcher Juan Potolicchio’s mannerisms on the mound are those of a man who knows he belongs in the circle.

A man totally in his element, Potolicchio growls after pitches. He laughs. He grunts. He listens to his teammates call him Poto, Shooter, Juan-O and 33 (his number).

He pumps his fist after strikeouts, which means he does plenty of fist pumping. He sticks his tongue out after throwing a mistake pitch.

And that’s when he says he’s not even feeling that comfortable.

Most important for the Shamrocks fastpitch softball team, he knows how to win.

Potolicchio proved that on Saturday night in the first round of the playoffs in the AFSA Classic at Stuart Sports Complex, making big pitch after big pitch in Dolan and Murphy’s 4-3 win in eight innings against the Bloomington Stix.

“I didn’t feel that comfortable,” Potolicchio said. “But we played really good defense and we were having a real good time on the field.”

In eight innings, the right-hander struck out 14 batters and allowed three runs. But he didn’t settle into a groove until after the third Stix run crossed the plate. Potolicchio was rattled early for two runs because two errors, and then gave up a home run in the third to Chris Delont.

After that, Potolicchio settled in, and at one point struck out six in a row.

“I don’t think Juan threw more than one bad pitch the entire night, and that was the home run,” said Dolan and Murphy manager Robin Reder. “He slowly got it going and really got into a groove.”

Potolicchio kept his team in the game and when the game went to extra innings, as if his job wasn’t hard enough, international tiebreaker rules state that the inning starts with the batting team putting a man on second base.

It didn’t matter to Potolicchio, who struck out the side.

In the bottom of the eighth, with Dave Perkins starting at second and moving to third on a wild pitch, it was the offense’s turn to reward its starting pitcher.

P.J. McKinney hit a soft ground ball up the first base line to drive in Perkins and end the game.

“I was pretty much running on anything,” Perkins said. “McKinney had one heck of an at-bat and did enough for us to win.”

With the win, Dolan and Murphy will play the winner of Green Bay and Benton Harbor today at Noon, with the winner advancing to 2 p.m.’s championship game.

Dolan and Murphy 6, Benton Harbor Planggers 3

In the final game of pool play, the Shamrocks came from behind to defeat Benton Harbor, 6-3, to clinch second place in their pool. There was a three-way tie for first between Dolan and Murphy, Thomson Merchants and Circle Tap. After tiebreakers it was determined that Circle Tap was first, Dolan and Murphy second and Thomson third.

Jarod Gutesha led Dolan and Murphy on offense by going 2-for-3, including a two-run home run and a double.

Starting pitcher Jonas Mach threw seven innings, allowed only three hits and struck out eight. All three runs came in the second inning.

“There was a bit of a lull there early but Jonas really started to get going after that,” said Reder.

The ISC World Tournament in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada announced its pairings for the Aug. 10-18 tournament. Dolan and Murphy is matched-up against Portland, and will play at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Off to a flying start
Decker and Potolichio lead Dolan & Murphy to victory against Thomson Merchants

July 14, 2007
By John Sahly staff writer

After the first two pitches of his second inning at-bat, Dolan and Murphy catcher Camden Decker didn’t look like he would come close to making contact with the ball, let alone hit it out of the park.

Thomson Merchants’ starting pitcher, Steve Manson, had already put a fastball by Decker, and then followed it up with a changeup that Decker was so early on he could have been able to get off a second swing at the ball. Given the way the first two pitches went, that might have been strike three.

It left Decker frustrated with himself, especially against a pitcher he said he knew he could get a hit against.

But down two strikes, Decker adjusted and shortened his swing. Two pitches later, he rounded the bases in a home run trot in Dolan and Murphy’s 6-0 win against Thomson in the first game of the AFSA Classic on Friday night at Stuart Sports Complex.

“I kind of just found it and just tried to go with the pitch,” said Decker of his home run. “I didn’t think it was going out when I first hit it.”

It did go out, past the left-center field fence, and the shot helped the Aurora team earn its first victory in the tournament.
