Update 2 on Kevin Castillo

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Kevin Castillo’s dad Paul provided an update to let us know that Kevin had surgery on the broken fibula and torn ligatments on Sunday, and that it went as well as could be expected, considering the injury, which the doctor’s described as “significant”.

We were told that Kevin was back at the ballpark Sunday, after surgery, to root for his Lumberkings teammates. The Lumberkings responded by winning the tournament.

Update on Greg de Belleval

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Quick update on Greg de Belleval, the pitcher for the Bridgeport Braves, injured at the Snapper Shootout in a game with Shakespeare Falcons when he was hit in the face with a line drive. Looks like he’ll be OK, injuries serious, but not quite as bad as feared initially. His note:

It looks like I was in a bar fight with Clutch or something!

The plastic surgeon said I don’t need any operations like first thought, but my cheek bone under my left eye has multiple fractures and my cheek bone under my right eye has minor fractures.

He said my nose is fine and my jaw isn’t fractured either. I will check with my dentist later to see how my teeth are doing, although they seem ok.

I can’t really close my jaw very well at this point, but hopefully when the swelling goes down I will have full function again.

Thank you fellas for your help Saturday afternoon, especially Clutch and Sammy and whomever else helped me over to the chair behind the bleachers.

Take care fella’s and look forward to getting back on the mound, but that may not be for a several weeks.

Horse Lake Thunder CF Randy Potskin made a game saving two out over-the-shoulder catch off a drive to left centre by Grey Sox PH Kevin Rasmussen with two out and two on in bottom of the
7th. Horse Lake then scored 3 in the 8th to win it, to cap the visitor’s comeback from
a 6-2 Grey Sox lead.

Game 2 played Saturday June 7th at 5:00 pm PDT
Vancouver Grey Sox 6 – Horse Lake Thunder 1
WP – Derek Mayson 7IP, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 6K, 4H
LP – Sean Whitten 4IP, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 8K, 3H – relief from Karl Gollan (5) 2IP, 4R, 2ER, 3BB, 3K, 4H

The Grey Sox bounced back in the nightcap led by pitcher Derek Mayson’s complete game 4 hitter and a 3 RBI triple by C Rasmussen in the 6th off Karl Gollan. Chad Ghostkeeper had a solo HR for the Thunder.

Weather was sunny and warm – and there was a large crowd on hand including the New Zealand and Australian Mens Under 19 National Teams, who are training and playing exhibition games in the Vancouver area over the next 10 day period in preparation for the ISF Junior Mens World Championship to be held in Whitehorse, Yukon later this month.

Game 3 – played Sunday June 8 @ 11:00 am PDT
Vancouver Grey Sox 1 – Horse Lake Thunder 0

LP – Darren Zack 5IP, 5H, 1R, 3Ks with relief from Sean Whitten (6) 1IP, 0H, 2Ks

A sacrifice fly by Grey Sox Brian Mayson in the bottom of the 1st scoring Trevor Johnstone provided pitcher Derek Mayson who turned in another strong effort allowing only 2 hits, with the margin of victory.

Game 4 – played Sunday June 8 @ 1:00 pm PDT
Vancouver Grey Sox 2 – Horse Lake Thunder 0
WP – Mike Piechnik 7IP, 3H, OR, 10Ks
LP – Sean Whitten 6IP, 3H, 2R, 10Ks

Grey Sox broke open a scoreless game in the 6th with a lead off walk, sacrifice and then a Trevor Johnstone single scoring pinch runner Bryan Abrey.

Weather on Sunday was overcast and cool, but the forecasted showers managed to stay away. A well played series of games between two evenly matched teams and thus provided the fans with a good glimpse of open level mens fastpitch. Sincere thanks and appreciation to the Horse Lake Thunder for making the trip to Vancouver and we look forward to seeing them back on July 25 – 27 for the 7th Annual Vancouver Challenge Tournament.

Next action for the Grey Sox is Friday June 13th when they make the short commute to New Westminster to play a doubleheader at 6:45 & 8:30 pm vs the New Zealand Under 19 Mens National Team. The Friday games vs. New Zealand will be played at Moody Park. The Grey Sox then return to their home park – South Memorial for a doubleheader on Saturday June 14th vs the Canadian National Under 19 Mens Team – game times are 3:00 & 5:00 pm. On Sunday June 15th the Grey Sox and the same Canadian National Under 19 Mens team will have a single game starting at 11:00 am, again at South Memorial Park – followed by a social and barbeque for both the teams and members of the Cloverdale Minor Softball Association who will be attending the game as guests of the Grey Sox.

News and notes:

Team Rainey/IAC
turned an 0-3 Saturday into a 4-0 Sunday, including a quarterfinal win over the then-unbeaten A1 So Cal Bombers. Rainey/IAC played well enough on Saturday, but had nothing to show for it at the end of the day. Their Saturday included an extra inning, 2-1 loss to the same Bomber team, with the same pitching match-up – as Sunday, Argentines Sebastian Gervasutti for Rainey and Lucas Mata for the Bombers.

The Bombers came into the tournament as the # 5 ranked team in the World, while Rainey was the next highest ranked team, at # 16. It was Rainey’s 0-3 Saturday that produced an unlikely match-up of the two powerhouses in a Sunday morning quarterfinal — the 3-0 Bombers as the top seed, and Rainey as an 0-3 low seed. As the # 5 seed from Pool A actually had to play and win an 8:30am Sunday morning game just to get to play the Bombers in the quarter final.

The rematch Sunday was equal to Saturday’s game, with Rainey coming away the winner, 2-1, scoring the game winner in the bottom of the 7th inning, on a double-throwing error. Coming home with the winning run was Rainey/IAC’s Chase Turner, who was 3-for-3 in the game, with two hits off Robbie O’Brien and a third against Lucas Mata, who came on in relief. Turner had an outstanding weekend, and was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

The Best of the West victory was the fourth for Team Rainey, which won the tournament three consecutive years in 2002-2004. It was the Bombers in 2005 which broke the string, followed by Innovative Communications’ back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007.

Innovative Communications of Utah turned in yet another strong performance for the third year in a row, having won the Best of the West back-to-back in 2006 and 2007. They wound up tied for third this year, with Portland DeMarini, winning a dramatic come-from-behind-last inning game against Rude Pac, 5-3, to get into the semi-finals against the hitting machine that was Santa Ceclia, Mexico.

Mark Summers of the River City Rockers hit five (count ’em, 5) home runs on the weekend, while Esteban Solano of the Grillos of Santa Cecelia Mexico, had four.

Portland DeMarini: Matias Tessore pitched 22 innings, surrendering only 3 earned runs, while Matt Barnes pitched 8 innings and gave up 2 earned runs. The leading hitters for Portland on the weekend were: Todd Garcia – .364, Paul Reyes – .364, Rob Gehrke – .357 and Cullam Ryan – .308. Chris Wright, Ryan Daly, and Todd Garcia led the team in RBIs with 3 each. Jeff Reich hit a game winning home run against Long Beach Black Sox and Todd Garcia also hit a home run against Long Beach Black Sox.

The Grillos of Santa Cecila, Mexico
hit 15 home runs as a team. (In case you were wondering, the ball was a standard issue, new model K-Master as used by the ISC, and the portable fencing was set at championship distances)

River City Rockers: Mark Summers was 10 of 13 at bat with 5 home runs and 2 doubles. Mike Abernathy was was 8 for 13 in his first tournament of the year. Zack Abernathy was 7 for 14 and Mario Pereira was 7 for 15 with two home runs. Summers and Pereira both hit home runs off of L. Mata of the Bombers. Summers hit a home run in 4 of the 5 games the Rockers played.
