Saturday, June 7th, 2008

The # 6 ranked CPI team out of Oswego New York knocked off the # 1 ranked (ISCII) team in the world, behind the pitching and bat of Shaun Winship. Winship held the potent Lumberking offense in check, surrendering but two hits, and clubbing a home run himself.

Blue Crew: Kluzy and Sharples

The Lumberkings’ are now 1-1 in the round robin portion of the tournament, with one game to go, against a very tough Wyevale team at 4pm California time. Wyevale just finished beating Ohsweken 12-4. The Lumberkings beat Ohsweken last night, 6-2, in a game that sent second baseman Kevin Castillo to the hospital with a broken fibula and torn ligaments from a sliding baserunner.

Game #23 – Saturday, 7pm EDT (4pm PDT)

(#1) California Lumberkings
(#17) Wyevale Tribe

Update on Kevin Castillo

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Lumberking second baseman Kevin Castillo was injured late last night when a runner slid into him. He was carried off the field and eventually taken to a Buffalo NY hospital at 3am NY time.

Castillo is a 23 year old from Long Beach, California, and one of the bright young start in American fastpitch. Just last month, he had been named to Team USA, after a stellar career with the USA Jr. National team. Castillo normally plays first or third base, but was playing second base due to the fact that the Lumberkings were missing their regular players up the middle.

After getting the news late last night, Kevin’s dad, Paul and Mrs. Castillo caught a red-eye flight to Buffalo to be with his son. He was at the hospital, and, as of 1pm NY time, they were waiting for him to go into surgery. Kevin has a broken fibula and torn ligaments, and according to the doctors, will not be able to start rehab for at least two months.

# 1 Lumberkings Take on # 6 CPI at Niagara

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

The ISC II’s # 1 ranked team, the California Lumberkings play CPI, from Oswego, New York today at 1pm EDT, 10:00 am. West coast time. CPI is one of the top teams in the ISC II, currently ranked # 6. In January of this year, CPI tied for third in the very tough AAU tournament, becoming the first ISC II team to finish that high. Shaun Winship, a hard throwing Canadian pitcher joined CPI last year, giving them a potent weapon on the mound and at the plate, as Winship has home run power.

Lumberkings Win Opener at Shootout But Lose Kevin Castillo to Broken Fibula

Friday, June 6th, 2008

The California Lumberkings won their opening night game in Niagara Falls, Ontario, at the Snapper Shootut, a 6-2 win over Ohsweken, but it was a costly win, as they suffered the loss of second baseman Kevin Castillo, whose ankle was broken by a sliding baserunner. It was just a week or so ago that Castillo was named to TEAM USA Men’s Softball team. We are told the injury will require surgery, and that Kevin is expected to be out at least 6-8 weeks.

Kevin was taken to the hospital in St. Catherine’s, just down the road from Niagara Falls. We were told that they would not accept his insurance, and told him that it would cost $3000 for an ambulance ride to a Buffalo, New York area hospital, about a half hour away.

The team paid for the doctors to put Kevin in a soft cast, and his teammates drove him to the Buffalo hospital. They were just pulling into the Buffalo hospital about 3:00 a.m. New York time when I spoke with them by phone.

Meanwhile, back in the “other” Ontario — Ontario, California, Kevin’s mother and father (Paul Castillo) were racing to catch a midnight flight to Buffalo to meet up with Kevin, and are expected to arrive by 11:00 a.m. Buffalo time. We caught up with Kevin’s dad just as they were boarding, so they will arrive Saturday morning.

If Dan Bernard or Jay Paylove, or any Snappers read this post, (and have not already spoken with Lumberking’s manager David Weldin, please call him at 661.472.1716, as he was trying to reach you about the tournament’s insurance information.
