Vancouver Challenge Schedule Announced

The Vancouver Grey Sox and South Hill Sports Association are pleased to annouce the draw for the 7th Annual Vancouver Challenge event to be held July 25 – 27 at South Memorial Park (41st Avenue East between Knight and Fraser streets) in Vancouver.

The event in the past has always attracted good quality teams, providing an excellent tune up prior to the ISC World Tournament, ASAs and the Softball Canada Nationals. Past tournament champions include:

Gate admission for the weekend is $5.00 per day or $10.00 for a tournament pass, Seniors $3.00 per day or $6.00 for a tournament pass, 12 and under are free.

As is always the Grey Sox practise, we will endeavour to provide updates and scores throughout the weekend of the event.

CPI had a Cinderella run this year at the AAU International Tournament, finishing in a tie for third place, the first ISC II to ever place that hight.

It’s a repeat, Rude-Pac and Panteras II hang on to win the Championships for the second straight tournament

The So Cal Alliance made it’s way up the coast to Santa Barbara for the seventh weekend of the year. With the Goleta fire causing some concerns earlier in the week, the tournament went off without the smoke becoming a factor.

Upper Division

Rude-Pac went 5 – 0 over the weekend for the championship giving up only four ones in the round robin for the number one seed. On Sunday, they faced the Long Beach Black Sox in the semi-finals and posted a strong 8 – 0 win. In the finals they once again faced San Diego Primetime who were making their third consecutive championship appearance. Primetime entered the championship game with an 11 – 4 victory over Flor de Cana. Spud Barker was in the circle for Rude-Pac against Danny Zupp of Primetime.

Rude-Pac starting scoring early picking up a run in the first and two in the second on a Keith Herbster home run. Primetime picked up a run on an Erik Geierman double who scored on a base hit. Primetime scored another run in the fifth to get to within one, but Rude-Pac came right back in the bottom of the inning to get the run back with Scott Pulcifer doubling in the inning and scoring on a Ron Mizener single. Things got a little dicey in the top of the seventh as Primetime loaded the bases. Spud Barker re-entered the game in relief of Gerald Pyle and got the final batter to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the game and also earn a save as well as the victory in the game.

Lower Division

Once again the Panteras II faced the Carribeans in the championship game. The Carribeans came into the game as the number one seed going undefeated in the round robin. In their Sunday morning semi-final game they beat the Palm Springs Express 5 – 0. Panteras II held off a scrappy So Cal Hustler team in their semi-final game, 6 – 5. Francisco Cruz took the ball for the Carribeans against Doug Rooney of the Panteras II.

The Panteras II kicked things off early in the top of the first on three hits included a double by Eli Salazar and a triple by Tony Garcia. The Carribeans came up with a run in the bottom of the inning, The score remained 3 – 1 until the bottom of the fourth when they took advantage of a hit and a fielding error to come within one run. In the bottom of the fifth, the Carribeans scored four runs. With two runners on base Mario Ramsey doubled to score both and he was followed by Valentine Douglas with an inside the park home run for a 6 – 4 lead. Gilbert Joiner entered the game in the top of the 6th for the Carribeans, but the Panteras II treated him rough, taking advantage of three walks, a hit batter and three hits to score five runs and take an 8 – 6 lead. The Panteras II added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a Tony Garcia home run. Doug Rooney got the final three batters out in order for the complete game victory.

Field of Teams for Vancouver Challenge Announced

The Vancouver Grey Sox and South Hill Sports are pleased to announce the field of teams for the 7th Annual Vancouver Challenge tournament scheduled for July 25 – 27 at South Memorial Park in Vancouver.

This year’s event is highlighted by a number of first time attendees, and its anticipated the line up of teams will provide local fastpitch fans with an opportunity to witness some top quality open level mens fastpitch softball.

The host Vancouver, BC Grey Sox (ISC ranked #9) will be joined by past Vancouver Challenge participants the Horse Lake, AB Thunder (ISC ranked #11) and Portland, OR DeMarini (ISC ranked #30). The first time attendees at this year’s event include the Pueblo, CO Bandits (ISC ranked #24), Bakersfield, CA Taylor Farms Lumberkings (ISC II ranked # 1), Camrose, AB Fury (unranked), Vernon, BC DC Arrows (unranked) and the Vancouver South Hill Giants (unranked).

Action commences Friday July 25th with the opening game scheduled for 6:30 pm, and a second game that evening set for 8:15 pm. Saturday has a full slate of games commencing at 8:00 am with the last game of the day scheduled to start at 9:00 pm. Sunday action again commences at 8:00 am with the Championship final set for 2:00 pm. All games will be played at South Memorial Park in Vancouver (41st Avenue East between Knight and Fraser streets in Vancouver). Gate admission for the weekend is $5.00 per day or $10.00 for a tournament pass, Seniors $3.00 per day or $6.00 for a tournament pass, 12 and under are free.

The full tournament draw will be released publically before the end of this week. As is always the Grey Sox practise, we will endeavour to provide updates and scores throughout the weekend of the event to Al’s Fastball List and Fastpitchwest.

Special Olympics Game at ISC World Tournament – Aug 14 – 7pm

The International Softball Congress and the Kimberly Recreation Association are pleased to announce that on Thursday, August 14th the Blazing Stars, an adult Special Olympics softball team from the Fox Valley, will be playing with and against players from the World Tournament.

Invitations have been sent to each WT team to participate and representatives from the Thomson Merchants, Circle Tap, the Bar of Appleton, the Midland Explorers and the Bar of Green Bay have already responded back to be part of the game. Many more are expected and all players are welcome.

The game will be played at 7:00 p.m. on the main diamond at Sunset Park where the Blazing Stars and World Tournament players will combine groups and play an exhibition game. World Tournament UIC Bruce Bierman will have a crew of Blue to officiate and Fastpitchwest.com’s Jim and Maddy Flanagan are going to be there as well.

I would like to encourage and invite players and fans to come out on the 14th to watch and support the game. It’s going to be a great addition to the World Tournament week and a chance for the ISC to continue to support a top-notch organization like the Special Olympics.

2008 Farm/NAFA Open

For the second consecutive year the event is being held in Middleton, Wisconsin in conjunction with The Farm Tavern. NAFA is extremely grateful to The Farm Tavern Sponsor/Manager Rod Peterson and The Farm Tavern Assistant Coach Dave LeBlanc for their cooperation. The event kicks of next Friday evening and continues as 18 teams will play until a champion is crowned Sunday after with the 2pm title game.

Santa Rosa Wins Another

SONORA CA – Santa Rosa Fastpitch escaped a “close call” in Sunday’s semifinals before going on the win its second straight tournament at Sonora’s Standard Park, downing Fat City 9-0 in five innings in the championship game of the NAFA Tournament.

Sunday’s single-elimination tournament was strictly for Class C teams, but on Saturday, Santa Rosa posted an impressive 5-2 win over the Class B River City Rockers after dropping a narrow 9-7 decision to another strong Class B team, Team Pape. Earlier, Santa Rosa overcame an early 4-0 deficit to drub Fat City 22-11.

Brandon Shearer, the loser against Team Pape, came right back to turn in his strongest performance of the season in beating the Rockers. Shearer and River City starter Ed Gaspar were locked in a 2-2 tie before Gaspar had to leave the game in the fifth with an injury. Santa Rosa then scored three runs to break the game open.

On Sunday, Santa Rosa opened with a six-inning 13-6 win over Country Club Villa, with Shearer, who was 4-1 when Santa Rosa Red finished 4-1 in the Sonora ASA Tornament earlier this season (the Blue team won six straight to take the title), picking up his second win of the weekend.

Gary Dower, who was the winner in relief in Saturday’s first game over Fat City, started in Sunday’s semifinals against the Merced Merchants, but was roughed up for four runs in the first inning before settling down. Merced still led 7-6 with Santa Rosa batting in the bottom of the fifth and facing the time limit. Santa Rosa had a runner on second with two out and one minute to play, when they had Mike Mathewson bunt for a quick out.

That forced the game into the sixth inning and after Shearer, who had relieved Dower, halted Merced in the top half of the inning, Santa Rosa scored twice to win the game, 8-7, with Casey Hillman hitting a long drive to left to drive in the game winning run. Shearer then shut down Fat City in the championship game for his third win of the day and fourth of the tournament. Fat City reached the finals by battering 45 Plus 13-4 in its semifinal game and the 45’s had eliminated J. Hart Plumbing, 9-8 in the first round.

Team Rainey/IAC at Vancouver

[Vancouver, BC ] – The Vancouver Grey Sox played host to
Team Rainey /IAC of Whittier, California for a four game super series at South Memorial Park in Vancouver this past weekend. The Grey Sox took 3 of 4 contests from our guests. Game results are enclosed below. We wish to thank Rod Rainey and the entire Team Rainey / IAC organization for making the trip to Vancouver and providing the local fastpitch fans with a chance to view some good quality open level mens fastpitch. The Grey Sox seasonal record now stands at 25 – 6.

Next action for the Grey Sox is next weekend when they will travel to Portland, Oregon for a four game super series with Portland DeMarini. Doubleheaders start at 7:00 pm Saturday July 19th and 9:00 am Sunday July 20th, with all games being played at Erv Lind Stadium.

The following weekend (July 25 – 27) the Grey Sox and South Hill Sports will host the 7th Annual Vancouver Challenge, with action commencing Friday evening at 6:30 pm and games all day Saturday and Sunday with the Championship Final set for 2:00 pm Sunday July 27th. An announcement of the line up of teams and the tournament draw will be provided in the next couple of days.
