New Zealand’s Marty Grant in search of a fourth ISF Gold medal
(click photo to enlarge)

Marty Grant calls Saskatoon, “A softball town that knows how to host an international tournament”. The excerpt below is reposted with permission, from Marty Grant’s Facebook page (for the benefit of our readers not on Facebook):

Saskatoon: My first visit to this town was in 1987 as a 21 year old. ISC with the Ashland Amvets, OH. We went 3-2 and finished 12th. In 1990 I returned and debuted with NZ. My first international was the semifinal of the Canada Cup and we beat Cuba 1-0. Canada were victorious in the final 3-0. In 2002 I was pitching coach for the White Sox and we finished 5th equal at the ISF’s.

From Wikipedia:

(“Softball News Latin America), based in Argentina.

Our friend Martin Jorge (Editor, SoftballNewsLA.com) has arrived in Saskatoon for the ISF World Championships and shares this note with us:

“I’m writing from Saskatoon, I arrived yesterday with Argentina National Team. I don’t think we [Argentina] will be playing any exhibition games here, but if we do I’ll let you know. Today is raining here in Saskatoon, so probably the games scheduled for today will be suspended.

Last weekend we were in Denmark, in the Boys of Summer Tournament. Argentina lost in semifinals against Stampede. I took some photos there, you can find in our Federation page in Facebook:

Martin will be providing news and info from Saskatoon as the tournament progresses.

Note on Streaming Video for ISF XII Men’s World Championships

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Note from Al Doran of Al’s Fastball re: Streaming Video of ISF Worlds at Saskatoon:

We have received numerous notes of inquiry since then from fans from all over the world asking for more details. I am sorry but I am as much in the dark here as everyone else. The host site still has no information on its subject link:

http://www.2009worldsmensfastpitch.com/Webcam.phpg

So all I can recommend is you keep watching that site and/or contact the host committee.

Excellent questions posed to us include:

– who are the announcers, play by play and colour commentators – do they know senior men’s ball?
– What video and audio quality will we have?
– What is the schedule for the games to be covered?
– will other games have at least a video image?

Hopefully we will have more information very soon as the countdown is on, we play ball in 3 more days!

The official site is:
http://www.2009worldsmensfastpitch.com<

[…]

I am counting on the host committee to provide me with our standard Game Summary Sheets right after every game so that we can keep the information flowing on all the action. I have been assured a reserved spot in the press box and a wireless connection so we should be good to go on Friday morning.

Safe travels to all the fans, players, umpires, and officials headed to Saskatoon, see you in the park on Friday morning.

Stay tuned to www.alsfastball.com

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Fred Hanker’s Squad Notches 29th Tournament Title in 6 years

The Long Beach Black Sox captured their third consecutive tournament title in as many weekends, winning Santa Fe Springs IV, July 11-12, 2009. Watch for details at the official league website shortly, by clicking the logo above.

From the Long Beach Black Sox website:

The Long Beach Black Sox and Ron Rupp held on for a 4-2 win to take Santa Fe Springs 4 in a victory over Flor de Cana. Rupp allowed 2 runs in the 3rd at that would be it for Flor de Cana.

The Sox struck early in the first inning of Flor de Cana starter Doug Rooney. Jason Obregon singled and Fred Hanker doubled to right center field as the ball went over the fence holding Obregon at 3rd base. Todd Budke followed with a walk loading the bases. Chris Minogue reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Obregon. Chris Paiva than hit a ground ball to shortstop that was misplayed for an error scoring Hanker.

The game was 2-0 in favor of Long Beach into the 3rd inning when Flor de Cana got on the board. Lou Enriquez singled and reached second on a fielders choice. Dave Hess singled in Enriquez making the score 2-1. David Carrillo doubled home Hess tying the score at 2-2 after 3 innings.

In the Sox 4th Chris Minogue doubled and scored on a Matt Shaw double. Chris Paiva singled Minogue to 3rd and Ken Shaw drove in Minogue on a groundout making the score 4-2 Long Beach. Ron Rupp would go onto retire 12 Flor de Cana hitters in a row to finish out the game and secure the victory for Long Beach. Doug Rooney pitched well in the defeat for Flor de Cana as he went 7 innings allowing only 6 hits and 3 earned runs. Dave Hess was 1-3 with a RBI and run scored and David Carrillo was 1-3 with a RBI double to lead Flor de Cana.

Fred Hanker, Chris Minogue and Matt Shaw each were 1-3 with a run scored. Chris Paiva was 1-3 with a RBI and Ken Shaw was 0-2 with a RBI. Todd Budke was 0-2 with a walk and a run scored. Long Beach wins their 3rd consecutive tournament in 3 weeks and their 5th SCIFL event of 2009 a league record.

The Sox improve to 38-10 in the SCIFL and win their 29th tournament in their 6 years of existence.

Complete recap and photos at the Black Sox website.

Like Maris and Mantle: Todd Budke and Fred Hanker power duo a big reason for Black Sox success in 2009. (Photo stolen from Fred Hanker’s Facebook page)

Editor’s note: Yesterday, I posted the photo of Todd Budke and Fred Hanker, finding it reminscent of an iconic photo of Maris and Mantle that I recalled seeing as a boy. Today, I found that photo. Remarkable, I thought. Lefty, righty…even the angle of the arms are the same.

Ontario Over Saskatchewan in 19u

Gold – Ontario (7-1)
Silver – Saskatchewan (7-2)
Bronze – Nova Scotia (6-3)

Editor’s note: Curious who handed Ontario their only loss? It was silver medalist Saskatchewan, 4-3, back on July 7, the first day of the tournament. Ontario avenged that defeat, and claimed the gold by beating Saskatchewan twice on the final day of the tournament, by scores of 3-2 and 5-1.

Indonesian men’s softball team heads to Canada despite financial constraints

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Agnes Winarti
The Jakarta Post
Jakarta

Despite not being fully ready financially, the Indonesian senior men’s softball team ensures their participation in the World Men’s Softball Championship in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan , Canada , in order to maintain the country’s image.

“We have collected fund from the local softball community to cover the contingent’s airfare. We are 80 to 90 percent ready, financially, to depart to Canada ,” chairman of the Indonesian Baseball and Softball Association (PERBASASI) Gugun Yudinar told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

PERBASASI requires around Rp 900 million (US$81,818) to cover the expenses of sending the softball men’s team to Saskatoon.

A contingent of 17 players and six officials will depart Wednesday for the July 17-26 world championship. The country secured a place in the event for the first time, after finishing third in the 2006 Asian Championships in Japan behind the hosts and runner-up the Philippines .

If Indonesia is absent from the event, Gugun said, the Asian region would be given a penalty by losing a place in the next championship.

“That happened once to Africa . Thus, we don’t want to disgrace our country,” said Gugun.

He hoped for the additional financial assistance previously promised by the State Ministry for Youth Affairs and Sports.

Indonesia will have its first pitch against Puerto Rico on July 17. Due to merely two weeks of training preparation, Gugun is no longer aiming for a place in the top 10 teams as he previously hoped for.

“The realistic target is getting the experience to play there,” Gugun said.

The world championship is participated by 16 countries, divided into two groups. The Indonesian team is in Group B with Australia , Czech Republic, Argentina , Venezuela, South Africa , Puerto Rico, and Canada , while Group A consists of Cuba, Denmark, New Zealand, USA, Botswana, Great Britain , Japan, and Philippines.

Vancouver Challenge 2009 – Final Wrap

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Vancouver, BC

The 8th Annual edition of the Vancouver Challenge Mens FP tournament concluded Sunday evening, and was undoubtedly our most successful event to date. Over the course of 3 days the consistent large crowds of fastpitch enthusiasts were treated to some quality team and individual performances. Mother nature also cooperated throughout the weekend with seasonable summer weather for the first two days and although temperatures were considerably cooler on Sunday, the rain held off until the final out was completed.

The host Vancouver Grey Sox captured the event with a 10 -3 victory in the final game over the Japanese National Team.

Individual Tournament Awards were as follows:

Top Hitter – Hiraku Yokoyama, Team Japan .700 avg
Top Pitcher – Nick Underhill, Vancouver Grey Sox, 3W, 1.21 ERA, 26Ks
MVP – Derek Mayson, Vancouver Grey Sox, 1W, 1 Save, 1.00 ERA, 11Ks .545 batting avg, 4 3B, 7RBIS

Tournament Highlights:

* A very committed and dedicated volunteer group who worked long hours to execute the event. To the many people who staffed the gate, concession area, beverage gardens, groomed the fields etc. sold 50 /50 tickets and did everything possible to make the event happen we extend a special thanks.

* The largest 3 day crowds in the eight year history of the event, reminding us what makes being at the ball park so special on a nice summer’s day.

* A competitive field of teams, who for the most part were evenly matched, including three international national teams (Great Britain, Denmark and Japan) who used the event as tune up for the upcoming ISF World Championship.

* An excellent and cooperative crew of umpires, under the leaderhsip of UIC Bob Henning, whose commitment to the sport was so evident and very much appreciated.

* Sincere thanks to our partners South Hill Sports for co – operating the event.

All game results including round robin and playoff are enclosed below.

The Vancouver Grey Sox now take an 18 day break while the ISF World Championship is completed and will resume action in the month of August with stops at the ASAs in South Bend, Indiana, the ISC World Tournament in Quad Cities and then the Softball Canada National Championship in St. Thomas, Ontario.

Weekend Blog July 13, 2009-07-13

Well the blackberry sore thumb award this week goes to the whole crew of Circle Tap Boys of Summer who did an outstanding job of sending us updates all 3 days of the Denmark tournament and we know that once he has a chance Zakk Flash will do a wrap up report as well. Caren Conrod led the team especially with the Blackberry updates. Hank de Wilde was right on time with full stats for every game. Even Darren got in on the act sending us updates. A team effort and it worked, thanks a lot guys.

Congratulations to the MidWest Stampede on their big win in Boys of Summer. Following their runner up performance in Monkton, the Stampede have let it be known they will be a force to be dealt with when it comes to August 14-21 in Quad Cities for the ISC World Tournament.

Special congratulations to Colin Abbott of the Farm Tavern who was the Leading Hitter and on
the All Tournament Team. It’s nice to see the perpetually young Mr. Abbott is in fine shape for the ISF World Tournament about to start this Friday in Saskatoon.

The Boys of Summer Report is at: http://tinyurl.com/ksknou

We had a lot of positive feedback on our Monkton report last week, http://tinyurl.com/nllm73
And on Brian Baillie’s wrap up report, http://tinyurl.com/m5t3hl

Honourable mention this week to Dennis Dosman for his excellent write up on the weekend in Tavistock, http://tinyurl.com/l9ewra leading the troops, put together a 4 team exhibition tournament featuring two ISC/OASA senior clubs the First Ontario Jarvis Gamblers, St Thomas Evergreen Centennials, along with the Saskatoon bound New Zealand Black
Sox and the host club, Sebringville Sting. Dave Bailey

We were getting results from the Vancouver Challenge then the lines went down. I can only assume that the final report is going to show up about the time I send this report out. As usual, we did have their schedule well in advance.

We did get a report from Huntsville, thanks for that Roger. I know some stats and pictures are coming soon, they will be added in when we get them. This was their 35th Annual Tournament and they were kind enough to send us a schedule well in advance.

We were also getting reports out of Frankenmuth, then the rain hit, but not sure what happened after that. Again I am sure the Stasics are sending final results soon for the U19 and U23 tournaments.

Last week we reported that a number of tournaments failed to report their results, that included:

July 3-5, Crogan, NY – Lewis County 4th of July Tournament
July 3-5, Port Huron, MI – Bluewater Invitational – ISC II Qualifier

Sadly we are still waiting for results from all of them. Port Huron had a lot of interest and they actually sent us a number of follow up reminders about their tournament yet we never got a schedule and not a clue as to who won it. And no, don’t send me the winner, send me the full results, please.

It was an only a so-so weekend for getting tournament results from other tournaments with the exception of the ones mentioned above. As for the other tournament organizers, all I can say is: “what happened?” We are still waiting for results from:

July 11-12, 2009 – Salt Lake City, UT – Carl Hansen (Page Break) Tournament
July 10-12, Au Sable Forks, NY – 47th Annual Au Sable Forks Tournament
July 10-12, Lackawanna, NY – Mickey Brennan Memorial Men’s Fastpitch Tournament
July 10-12, Glace Bay, NS – John Deering Memorial
July 10-12, Ponsonby, NY – Tom Rider Memorial Tournament
July 10-12, Ludington, MI – Ludington Tournament – A-C
July 11-12, Mississauga, ON – Mississauga Sportsmen’s Fastball League Tournament

A lot of other news came in over the weekend – see http://www.alsfastball.com/index.php?page=25

The schedule for the ISC II Tournament of Champions was posted this week on the ISC II site and is generating a lot of interest. http://www.iscfastpitch.com/index.php?page=191
