Video – Holoien strikes out Motroni in Monkton

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Dean Holoien, pitching for the Kitchener Rivershark Twins, strikes out Bruno Motroni, of the MidWest Stampede, to lead off the championship game of the Monkton World Fastball Invitational. Holoein was throwing very hard and is in great form for Team Canada heading into the ISF World Championship in late July in Saskatoon. Ballpark Radio’s Steve Sabourin, of CKNX Radio 920 am, makes the call. You can watch in standard definition or click the HD button in the bottom right of the video to see in high definition.

Smith on mark about life, ball

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Former all-world player has much perspective

BY STEVE EWEN, THE PROVINCE

Coach Mark Smith takes in the action at Softball City on the weekend.

He was a softball vagabond. He worked in corrections with young offenders. And he helps coordinate programs for some 60 sport organizations in Nova Scotia.

Mark Smith’s resume could become even more eclectic, too, if women’s fastpitch is readmitted into the Olympics and he stays at the helm of the Canadian national team.

Smith is currently guiding that squad at the Canada Cup tournament at Softball City. He was named bench boss in January; he also happens to be the skipper of the men’s national side, a post he’s had since 2001.

“It would be a nice problem to have,” Smith, 50, said of the Olympic possibility. “I haven’t thought that much about it yet, though. I know in October there’s a decision [via an IOC vote].

“If it does get back in to the Olympics and I’m approached about that position, I’ll certainly think about it. It’s not a slam-dunk for me. I’m in a very good place in my life with my family and my career, so it would have to be an exceptional circumstance to get me to leave what I have.”

Smith was born in Halifax and lives in Falmouth, N.S., with his wife and their teenaged daughter. By day, he is Sport Nova Scotia’s director of sport development, a job that sees him assist various athletic groups and one that he’s held since 2001. Prior to that, he worked for 15 years with young offenders.

“It teaches you how to manage people, deal with people, deal with conflict, how to make sure young people have constructive, positive things in their lives to keep them focused,” said Smith. “I love working with at-risk kids. I think they’re creative and innovative. It’s just that unfortunately, in a lot of cases, their focus is in the wrong direction.”

His focus for the longest time was softball and only softball, he admits. He’s one of the greatest players to ever come out of this country; he was inducted into the Softball Canada hall of fame in 1999 and the International Softball Congress hall of fame in 2004.

In senior men’s club ball, he played for teams in five different provinces, including helping Victoria Payless to fifth spot in the ISC world championship tournament they hosted in 1990. He also was a star in California, leading the Camarillo Kings to the ISC world title in 1981 as a mere 22-year-old, and then a repeat performance atop the worlds the following year.

He was also part of a runner-up team in his nine ISC world tournaments and garnered three first team all-world selections.

He admits, though, that he may not have been the easiest guy to coach back in the day.

It’s funny how things turn out sometimes.

“I was the type of player who needed to be mentored,” said Smith. “I had a lot of energy and a lot of talent, but I needed the mentoring of the older guys to keep me in line. I was 20 years old, living on a beach in California. It doesn’t get any better than that. I was single and living the life. You’re 10 feet tall and bulletproof. That’s what you think at the time.

“You find a good gal, you settle down and you start to find out that there’s more to life than softball. I went through a period from 17, 18, to 21, 22, when softball was all that I did. I didn’t work. I was a softball pitcher.

“All of the sudden you get a job, you buy a house, you fall in love, and you start realizing there’s a whole more to life than throwing a ball. I think a lot of players go through that.”

Luna Towing Wins Prescott 4th of July Tournament

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

PRESCOTT – Luna Towing out of Amado topped the Prescott Outlaws 8-1 in Sunday’s championship game of the ASA Men’s B-C Fast Pitch State Tournament at Ken Lindley Field

The teams met earlier in the day in the championship bracket final with Luna coming out on top 9-4.
The Outlaws got one more shot at Luna thanks to an 11-4 win over the Tucson Rattlers in the consolation bracket final, but came up short.

In Saturday’s late games, Prescott’s Eggen Weed lost to Luna 12-6, while the Outlaws edged the Rattlers 8-7.

The Rattlers went on to beat Prescott’s Brennen Aire 11-3. Eggen was eliminated from the tourney with a 10-9 loss to Prescott’s Barros.

Barros was bounced from the tourney with Sunday morning’s 12-6 consolation bracket loss to the Rattlers.

All nine teams that participated are eligible to compete in the Class B National Championships in Prescott starting on Sept. 4.

The top two teams earned the right to be the “Arizona Host” teams.

Video – Holoein cashes Wolfe in Monkton final

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

With the bases loaded, Kitchener Rivershark Twins’ Dean Holoein nubs a little roller up along first, but it’s enough to score Ryan Wolfe with the first run of the game in the final of the 2009 Monkton World Fastball Invitational. Catch the look Holoein gives umpire Lou Davis on strike one. Ballpark Radio’s Steve Sabourin, of CKNX Radio 920 am, makes the call. You can watch in standard definition or click the HD button in the bottom right of the video to see in high definition.

Video – MidWest Pickoff Play

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Bob Rosthenhausler of MidWest Stampede picks off Kitchener Rivershark Twins Jody Eidt at second base in the first inning of the championship game at the Monkton World Fastball Invitational. Watch carefully and you can see Rosthenhausler and shortstop Greg Cascaes signal each other for the pickoff after the first pitch to batter Blair Ezekiel. Ballpark Radio’s Steve Sabourin, of CKNX Radio 920 am, makes the call. You can watch in standard definition or click the HD button in the bottom right of the video to see in high definition.

(Sorry, Jody. Stay tuned, we have your RBI hit in the same game)

A Chance to Help Ken Vierling

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

From Lori Sorenson:

Stand Up for Ken

He Needs YOUR Help!

Here is a brief update on our “Comic Dude”. Ken is now back in Minnesota at St. Mary’s in Rochester for rehab. It is hard for Ken as he is really not able to do a lot for himself yet. They are teaching him to try and feed himself and brush his teeth. He is riding around in a motorized chair (he could use a few driving lessons though!). After rehab Ken will be going to assisted living. Ken is also an avid bowler, umpire and loves to play poker. Those of us who know Ken know of his sense of humor and spirit and love for life. He loves to sing and make people laugh.

Ken is now paralyzed from the chest down. He does have some sensation in his legs but the sensations move around. He can move his arms but has no use of his hands. The prognosis is that Ken’s chances of ever walking again are not great. But Ken is a “battler” and along with some help and support from us, he will fight this battle.

Obviously, Ken will face great financial issues in the future. Aside from astronomical hospital bills, down the road, there will be income issues for a long time, as employment potential will certainly be very questionable.

This tragic event has certainly changed Ken’s life in many ways. Therefore, we are planning a couple different fundraisers at this time to help Ken and his family. The first one is Saturday August 29th at the Farmington American Legion. This event will include a Silent Auction, Beer Bash and Sandwiches and music by Chopper. The second event will be Saturday Sept 12th at the Owatonna Knights of Columbus. This will include a Spaghetti Dinner, Silent Auction and Bake Sale.

Here’s how you can help us affect the future of Ken. Please consider contributing a gift basket or other auction items to one or both of the silent auctions. Some ideas that have sold well at past auctions include:

* Gardening, Movie Night, Arts & Crafts, Scrapbooking
* Coffee Time, Spa and Relaxation, Wine and Cheese, Sports Basket
* Breakfast Basket, Italian, Birthday Party, Book Basket, Afghans, vacations/trips
* Pet Basket, Baby, Night on the Town, School Basket, Game Night, Car Care Basket

The baskets will be used to raise money for the sole purpose and benefit of Ken. Your help and generosity can make these benefits a success and make a significant impact on this very special man that has put a smile on so many faces throughout the country and beyond. Please help give Ken an opportunity to meet the many challenges facing him today and in the years ahead. Your donation can truly make a difference in the life of this man who has made such a difference in so many lives. We sincerely thank you for you consideration.

Donations can be sent to:

Dave Vierling
14725 Portland Ave S #311
Burnsville, MN 55306

We will also be available to pick-up donations. Please call 952-236-7835 or email vierlingd@yahoo.com with any questions or to schedule a pick-up.

Hope to see you all at one or both of the benefits.
Thank you for your consideration on making these events a success for Ken!

God Bless You All,
Dave & Lori
