2010 ISC Roster – Decatur Pride

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The Decatur Pride return for 2010 with a revamped pitching staff and other new additions, adding both youth and depth to the roster.

With the retirement of David Scott and Bobby Ginger, and a season ending knee injury last month to T.J. Dobson, only Brent Stevenson remains from last years 4 man staff. Stevenson, who was 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA at last years ToC, will provide leadership and a big game mentality to the younger players on this year’s squad.

New additions to the Pride pitching staff include 2007 ISC MVP Karl Gollan. Although still one of the younger pitchers in the ISC, Gollan is a proven veteran who has excelled at the top level of the sport for more than 10 years and brings a double bonus with his arm and potent bat to the Pride line-up. The Pride is also pleased to announce that 2008 USA Jr. Men’s National Team pitcher Jim Hartman will be joining the team. The 19 year-old Hartman posted a 2-1 record at last years ToC with the Sioux Falls Sox and is considered one of the top young pitching prospects in the United States.

Outside the circle, the Pride will again be a mix of veterans and talented young players.

Behind the plate for the Pride will be one of the top young American catchers, Camden Decker, who comes to the Pride after spending the last few seasons with Aurora. Decker will also see time in the outfield when the pitching staff is being handled by one of the Pride’s other two veteran catchers, Mike Hopkins and Greg Morganthaler.

Future Hall of Famer David Boys led the Pride in nearly every offensive category last summer with a .427 batting average, including 25 home runs and 61 RBI’s in 58 games and will return for another season as the Pride shortstop.

The 2009 ISC II All World Father/Son tandem of Rick Minton and 19 year old Drew Minton will also both be back. Drew will cover the area his Dad did for so many years with the great Pride teams of the past and Rick will move over to 1st base where he will share duties with the Pride’s 2nd leading hitter last year, Doug Williams.

Blake Martin and Larry Moffett will be at 3rd base and utility man Paul Carlton will also see time in the infield during the year. New Pride player JD Arnold will split time between shortstop and 2nd base. Arnold, a Decatur native, was the shortstop for two-time Class A National Champion Vandalia Guaranteed Air Freight prior to that team’s folding at the end of last season.

Robbie Tirpak, Ty Morganthaler, Dean Lambert and the final new addition in the team, Casey Spears, will patrol the outfield. Spears, a recently graduated Division I center fielder, was the 2009 MVP of the Kelso Klassic when he strung together 15 consecutive hits and set a tournament record for the most hits ever in the event.

The Pride is supported this year by a Board of Directors that will oversee the fundraising and development of the team, along with setting the vision for the future. Those members consist of:

Steve Martin – Business Manager
Phil Jones – Fundraising Director
Wayne Carter – Publicity/Advertising Director
Donna White – Volunteers Director
Mike Martin – Statistics
Pat Dawson – Board Member (President of Miles Chevrolet and Crown Toyota)
Roger Oliver – Board Member (Owner of Van Horn Hybrids)

The Pride home schedule will be highlighted by the return of the Decatur Shootout, which has been announced as an ISC Qualifier. In addition to the Pride, teams entered in this year’s event include Aurora Dolan & Murphy, The Bar of Appleton, Marshall, MI Lightning, Belleville Stallions, Pete’s Blues of Mascoutah, IL, Kelso, MO Fastpich, and Villa Grove Log Cabin. We hope to be announcing a title sponsor at some point in the very near future.

One of the most attended events of 2009 will also return to Borg Warner Field this summer. Van Horn Hybrids will again sponsor a Hall of Fame/Old Timers Night at the ballpark on July 10th. Last season more than 30 Illinois ASA Hall of Fame Members and former players from the 1940’s to the 1990’s were introduced and honored prior to the game in front of nearly 1,000 fans. We expect an even larger contingent this year based on the popularity of last year’s event. Following the ceremony, the Pride will play a doubleheader with Jefferson City, Missouri.

In addition to the above, the Pride will look to compete in both the ASA Men’s Major Nationals in South Bend and the ISC in Midland along with other tournaments throughout Illinois and the Kelso Klassic in Missouri in 2010.

Someone to Know: NAFA’s Robert Hernandez

Written by Bob Otto on April 5th, 2010

ANAHEIM, CA – In 1990 Robert Hernandez was asked if he wanted to play a little fastpitch softball in the Burbank City League. He was about 30 at the time. A bit of a late start, he admits. But once he had a taste of fastpitch, he was hooked for good.

In the ensuing 20 years, Hernandez has advanced from playing and managing, and running a local Burbank tournament to becoming one of the North American Fastpitch Association’s (NAFA) top directors.

“Robert is one of the most well respected directors in men’s fastpitch,” said Benji Hedgecock, Executive Director of NAFA since 2003. “His intelligence and passion is unmatched and he is one of the best people in our sport.”

Hernandez joined NAFA in 2007 after nine years as an Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Southern California Adult Commissioner overseeing all adult programs. He now holds the titles of NAFA Pacific Coast Vice President, NAFA World Series Tournament Director, and NAFA Southern California State Commissioner.

Joining NAFA – which offers men’s fastpitch leagues and World Series national tournaments in nine divisions – (age 18-Under, 23-Under, A, A-Major, AA, AA-Major, AAA, Open, and Master’s) has been a most satisfying move on his part.

“Working with the folks in NAFA has been great,” Hernandez said. “These are people who really care about the men’s (fastpitch) program.”

Let’s learn more about Hernandez and his involvement with NAFA.

Why did you decide to join NAFA? In 2007 I was asked to join the newly formed Southern California Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL) as the tournament director and president of the league. When the SCIFL voted to adopt the NAFA playing rules in their tournaments, Benjie Hedgecock asked me to be the tournament director at the NAFA World Series. He had asked me for a few years, but I was already with the ASA. Once those ties were cut, I accepted his offer.

NAFA offers several World Series. What do you like best about that? At the World Series, teams play against other teams and pitchers that they should be playing against and not some stacked team that a commissioner blindly assigns (to a certain division of play). One or two guys may slip by, but not whole teams.

What are your goals for NAFA in California? We want a place that new players can find out about the game, grow the program, keep teams playing fastpitch, and get teams to the championship events. Preferably the NAFA World Series as teams will have their best chance to play against other teams of the same caliber.

Where do you see the greatest need in growing the game? Working up from the lower levels is what I’ve always tried to do…jumping right to the top doesn’t seem to last for most teams because money dictates that level too much and teams come and go too quickly.

What exciting things have happened with the Southern California Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL). The SCIFL received its 501c 3 status (non-profit organization) in 2009 and is actively looking for sponsors for the league. The league is run in such a way that all the funds go back into the league and not to any individual team…”

What is happening with NAFA in some of the neighboring states? I have been working with my New Mexico State Commissioner, Gary Galindo, to unite the tournaments there and bring them under NAFA also. This includes teams from Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and El Paso.

How has that progressed so far? In 2010, the tournaments will all run NAFA and Gary was a big part in getting this accomplished. We hope to have 16-20 teams play in each of the five events there. Once New Mexico is up and running, I’ll start looking for the next program that may be looking for a change.

What NAFA leagues are operating in Southern California? There are currently two tournament leagues in California – the SCIFL in Southern California, and in Northern California the West Coast Fastpitch Association (WCFA) run by NAFA Northern California Director, Bob Chapel. Bob and I have always had a good relationship since our days on the (ASA) Region 14 classification committee. So it was great that he came on board when I asked him if he would run the northern league.

What about leagues on a local level? There are a few recreational leagues run by various parks and recreation departments. Artesia, Burbank, and San Diego still provide a place to play, but the leagues keep getting smaller each year.

You’ve been busy getting ready for the Las Vegas Road Trip III tournament (April 9-11). How has the response been? We have a wide range of teams coming from seven states representing two countries, the U.S. and Mexico. We are still waiting for a team from Canada to enter. CPI from New York is coming this year and so far it’s the team that has ventured the farthest to play. Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and California are the other states represented.

How many teams and in what divisions can fans see some great fastpitch action in Las Vegas? We have 27 teams entered; seven in AA-Major / AA division; seven in A-Major, and 13 in the A division. While we still grew this year, the economy really hit hard as some of the teams that played in the past just couldn’t afford to come.

Opening Day

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Sunday, April 4, 2010: Baseball’s Opening Day. On Easter Sunday no less. Springtime. When a young man’s thoughts turn to …playing ball.

Former baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti captured the feeling that the game brings to so many of us in “The Green Fields of the Mind “, reminding us of the common thread that the game weaves through our lives. The optimism of spring, when things begin anew, the summer days and evenings filled with games, and finally, the chill that comes at the end of the season:

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

In a sense, men’s fastball already had its opening day back on the afternoon of January 21, 2010, when the first set of games of the 2010 AAU International Tournament were played. But with most players putting the gloves away for the rest of winter when they returned from Orlando, I suspect most fastballers consider the spring to be the “start” of the 2010 season.

For some of us in the warmer regions like California, the season kicked off a couple weeks ago when the SCIFL opened their season at Santa Fe Springs. But no matter. Today is the opening day for Major League Baseball, and reason in and of itself to celebrate its return, and get us all thinking about the fastball season ahead. The team rosters will start rolling in, with all of us perusing them to see which players are back with their old teams, which ones are being being fitted for new uniforms, and what new players arrive onto the radar. The first set of ISC team rankings can’t be far behind.

And so it is. Springtime. Opening Day. When everything else begins again….

Written by Bob Otto on April 2nd, 2010

VANCOUVER, BC, CANADA – Manager Derek Mayson of the Meralomas is busy finalizing his roster and filling out his schedule for the 2010 season. One of the stops on that schedule will be at the “2010 California Classic” June 19-20 at Sportsplex USA in Santee, California.

Twelve International Softball Congress (ISC) World Tournament open-level teams from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will battle for one World Tournament berth that will be awarded to the highest finishing U.S. West team.

Mayson not only manages the team along with Danny Lee, but Mayson is also one of the team’s top pitchers at the age of 26.

Playing in the deep southern part of California will be a new venture for Meraloma, which won the Premier League championship in 2007-2008. And Mayson said the team’s looking forward to the trip.

What can fans expect to see?

“We’ve got a balanced line-up that features some of everything with speed and defense being the keys,” Mayson said, adding that the players are paying their own way through fundraising and some support from the Meraloma Club. The ball club is also a member of the oldest amateur sports organization in North America since 1923, Mayson said.

Some of the key players to watch include Mayson, who has been with the team for nine years. Along with Ryan Hawk, 28, in the infield, and a 4 year veteran with the club. And catcher, Mike Podmore, 41, with the longest tenure of 23 years.

The roster isn’t quite complete, but fans can expect to see most of these players taking the field for their opening game:
