5 Salinas, CA Athletics
(winner, Best of the West)

11 Bakersfield, CA Silverhawks
(runner-up Best of the West)

15 Portland, OR Columbia River Rockers
(Boatnik Champions, Grant’s Pass Oregon)

34 San Mateo, CA California Builders

* The Italian Athletic Club (IAC) was previously ranked # 22 in the ISC pre-season rankings, but announced that they would not be competing for a berth to the ISC World Tournament, and are therefore not ranked by the ISC. Santa Cecelia/Mexicali (Mexicali tournament champs) likewise would warrant inclusion if they were competing in this year’s ISC World Tournament, as would Innovative Communications of Salt Lake City, Utah, giving the western region (at least) ten (10) strong, nationally ranked teams. Editor’s note: We’ve bumped this back to the top in order to credit the camera man. We should also have said “Name that cameraman”. It was Victor Reyes, of the Santa Cecelia/Mexicali team.

The #4 Chicago/NY Domincana will kick off their season this weekend in Midland while #5 California A’s are fresh off their triumph at the Best of the West tournament.

Fastball This Week
From Dennis Dosman

Editor’s note: A good batch of information from the Ontario province and thereabouts, from Dennis Dosman:

First of all…..I sent a note out last week to many of you about our good pal, former TienHoa and Waterloo Twin coach Doug Davies saying that he was in London’s University hospital for surgery. Doug’s daughter Jen has been keeping some of us informed…and the latest I have is that he is still in ICU with hope that he will soon be released to a floor…prayers and well wishes to one of fastball’s finest….

Niagara on the Lake, the Snapper Shootout this past weekend….got off to a great start on Friday night…Saturday a complete schedule in but Sunday was a rain out…..and the tournament was called early Sunday morning…

Here are some highlights courtesy of Al’s Fastball…and Dan ‘Bernard of the Snappers

Google Map Previews in Gmail

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Editor’s note: This new feature in Gmail seems made to order for fastball player and fans. Instead of copying the address to your next tournament, opening google maps, and then pasting the address in, Gmail gives you a map link/preview right inside Gmail.

To activate, go to “Settings”, then “Labs”, then “Enable” the map preview feature. It works well.

From the Google Blog:

Google Maps previews in Gmail
Posted by Mark Knichel, Software Engineer

I often receive emails containing addresses in them — where to meet for dinner, the location of my friend’s new apartment, etc. To find out where these places actually are, I have to copy the address, open up Google Maps, and paste it in. Today, we’re making it easier to see maps of all the addresses you receive in Gmail and Google Buzz.

Enable “Google Maps previews in mail” from the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, and any time you receive an address or a Google Maps link in an email, a preview will appear containing an interactive Google Map of that location. Any Google Maps URL will work, but we currently only extract US addresses (we’re working on making addresses around the world work).

Rhys Casley Takes the Mantle

Monday, June 7th, 2010

New Black Sox Captain

A new era has dawned for the Black Sox with the announcement that Rhys Casley will now lead the team, replacing Jarrad Martin who held the role for a decade.

Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase believes the Hutt Valley player will provide the leadership required to take the team through to the 2013 World Championships.

“Rhys has been a leader within the Black Sox for a number of years, he is widely respected by his peers for his no nonsense follow me approach. It is however his qualities of humility, integrity and pride that points to this proud Kiwi as the player we believe will lead the Sox with distinction,”
Kohlhase said.

Casley, 31, first made his debut for the Black Sox in 2002 but missed out on making the 2004 team for the world championship. However, a year later he was back in the side and was one of the leading performers at last year’s world championship, playing in all 12 games and was in the top three batters for the team.

He is excited at the opportunity to lead the Black Sox.

“It’s a real privilege for me especially to follow Jarrad. He’s the best player I’ve had the fortune to be a teammate of and I’ve learned so much from him.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of leading this wonderful team. It means a great deal and is a real highlight.”

The iconic Martin will remain an integral part of the team and is part of the senior management group.

His role will be vital according to Kohlhase.

“Jarrad has been the world’s premier player for the past decade, his captaincy of the Black Sox has been nothing short of outstanding. Jarrad will continue to play a major role within the Black Sox as well as mentoring Rhys.”

Martin, took over the captaincy role when Mark Sorenson retired in 2000, was at the helm when the team won its third consecutive world championship in Christchurch in 2004. He then led the team at last year’s world championship.

He remains enthusiastic and positive about his role within the team:

“It’s been a great experience to be part of this team and I’ve been honoured to lead the team.

“I will always be proud of the Black Sox and that’s why I’m staying on to ensure we have the best possible chance of winning in 2013.

“This is a special group and I’m totally supportive of Rhys as our new leader.”
