Corona softball tourney to aid 7-year-old cerebral palsy victim

Each year Raymond Angulo Men’s Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament helps raise money for a 7-year-old who suffers from cerebral palsy. This year, sponsors said, state budget cuts have made the need a critical one.

In previous years, the annual tournament helped pay for big-ticket items like a wheelchair and walker for Joseph Raymond Angulo. However, as of July 1, the family stopped receiving Medi-Cal assistance.

So this year, the proceeds will go toward other day-to-day items such as diapers for Joseph. The diapers cost the family $197 a month, said his mother MaryAnn Angulo.

She said she thought budget cuts wouldn’t affect her son.

“I thought that because he was disabled that the state would always provide for him regardless, because he has special needs and we pay taxes. But somehow, it didn’t matter,” Angulo said.

She said her middle-class family makes too much to receive help now that the budget has been tightened. They have private insurance that pays for 80 percent of medical costs, she said.
The 20 percent they are responsible for can add up fast, Angulo said.

To add to the hardships, thieves broke into the van that is used to drive Joseph around and they had to pay for repairs, , Angulo said.

During the tournament, money is raised through raffle ticket and snack bar sales, said Diana Rae Gomez, Joseph’s cousin, who helped organize the event.

The tournament, held for the past nine years, is also an annual remembrance of Raymond Angulo. Raymond Angulo, Gomez’ grandfather, made an impact in the community, Gomez said.

“I know my grandfather was a great man, I know he touched so many peoples’ lives in so many different ways,” said Gomez in an e-mail. “I am truly amazed to hear stories of how he touched a complete stranger’s life, how he alone made a difference. This is what we celebrate every year in August.”

Raymond Angulo would have been proud to see how the family gives their time, money and love to help Joseph, Gomez said. “It’s a really cool event. A lot of the community gets together every year. …They just remember how Corona used to be,” Gomez said.

Eleven teams are coming to the Saturday tourney from different cities such as San Fernando, Santa Ana, Pala Indian Reservation and three from Corona, organizers said.

The event is sponsored by the Southern California Rebels fast-pitch organization of Corona.

Fawcetts set high goal for fastpitch nationals

August 28th, 2009

From The Guardian:

P.E.I. squad begins play on Sunday
The Guardian

The Charlottetown Hunter’s Ale House Fawcetts have set a high goal for themselves at the national senor men’s fastpitch championship in St. Thomas, Ont.

The Fawcetts are looking to finish in the top five and make a run deep into the playoffs in the eight-team tournament which gets underway on Sunday. No P.E.I. team has ever finished that high at the nationals.

The Fawcetts will face the Jarvis Gamblers from Ontario their opening game Sunday at 10 p.m. AT. The Gamblers have Islander Jeff Ellsworth in their lineup. The Fawcetts are rated at 6-1 odds in the Diamond Dirt 2009 championships newsletter at winning the tournament.

“(Pitcher) Frank Cox is a horse and can be ridden while back-up Ward Gosse makes this team a prime contender and quite capable of grabbing a medal,” stated the newsletter. The Fawcetts’ pitching staff is talented and deep and also features Mike Bishop and Mitch Hardy.
Gosse is also expected to help the team offensively.

The Kitchener Hallman Rivershark Twins are the pre-tournament favourites. The Fawcetts will be hosting the 2010 championship. (http://www.canadians2009.ca)

[Sheyboygan, WI] – B.J. Balde cracked a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Countryside Remodeling over E.L.F. 6-5 Wednesday night in the championship game of the Hingham Men’s Fastpitch Tournament.

Countryside, the defending champion, placed men on first and second base on walks to Dan Skeris and Jerrod Dulmes before Balde came through with his clutch hit.

The champions had forged leads of 3-0 after two innings and 5-2 through four innings, but E.L.F. responded with one in the fifth inning and two in the seventh for a 5-5 deadlock.

Dulmes, the winning pitcher, allowed five runs on seven hits and had 11 strikeouts and three walks. The losing pitcher was reliever Rod Tidwell, who gave up one run on two hits, struck out three and walked three.

Andy Bossler was the hitting star for the winners, going 2-for-3. For E.L.F., Jack Hammond and Tidwell both were 2-for-4.

The tournament’s offensive most valuable player was Nate Rhode of Adell Co-op. Rhode, who hit .273 in the Hingham Fastpitch Summer League, hit an incredible .867 (13-for-15) in the tournament.

Dulmes was named defensive MVP. He faced 118 batters in 28 innings, gave up nine runs on 21 hits, allowed eight walks, struck out 40 and compiled a 4-0 record for Countryside Remodeling

The tournament, which usually runs two weeks, stretched into a third week because of a number of rainouts.
