The Farm Claims ASA Major Title with 10 Win Weekend

August 2nd, 2009

The Farm Tavern, WI takes two from previously unbeaten NY Gremlins for ASA Major Title

The Farm Tavern overcame a first game loss to the New York Gremlins, winning ten games in a row thereafter, including two championship game wins over the runner-up Gremlins to claim the ASA Major National Title. The Farm handed the Gremlins their first loss of the tournament, 12-5 in the first championship game, and then 8-1 in the “if” game.

The string of wins against top flite teams was important for The Farm Tavern, whose big question mark heading into this month’s ISC World Tournament, was pitching. The Farm won the ISC World Tournament in 2007 at Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, on the strength of the arm of Most Valuable Pitcher Korrey Gorreau. Gorreau helped pitch them to a top 5 finish again last year, but retired prior to the 2009 season. The Farm made a key acquisition to replace Gorreau, signing Canadian Frank Cox away from the 2008 ISC World Champion Kitchener Rivershark Twins, and adding another hard throwing Canadian, Darryl Tilley. Tilley went down with an injury and was questionable for the 2009 ISC World Tournament.

At the World Fastball Invitational in Monkton last month, Tilley was unavailable, and Cox carried the lions share of innings, getting help from 18 year old Australian Andrew Blackshaw. The innings took their toll on Cox, though, as the weekend wore on, underscoring the questions fans had about the Farm’s chances at the ISC World Tournament. Judging from their outstanding performances at the ASA Major this weekend, the Farm (ranked # 5 at present) appear to be ready to challenge the world’s best.

At this weekend’s ASA Major, Cox won six games, including the final two on Sunday to win the title, while Tilley had four wins of his own. The Farm’s bats stayed hot on Sunday, with seven home runs on the day. The squad from Madison, Wisconsin, held to just 4 hits in their opening round loss to Bryan Newton, knocked out a total of 28 hits Sunday, (15 and 13, respectively.

In the first championship game, it was Jim Corbett (2 homers), Donny Hale (homer and 4 RBI) and Colin Abbott (homer, 2 RBI) combining for 8 RBI, to carry the offense. Rob Gray also homered for the Farm.

In the second championship game, Abbott and Corbett each homered again, and Zenon Winters added one more for the 209 ASA Major Champions.

New York pitcher Bryan Newton appeared to tire on Sunday, after picking up three wins (including the opening round games against the Farm) , to pitch his team into the finals. Despite falling twice on Sunday, the NY Gremlins turned some heads this weekend with their runner-up finish, including three wins over higher ranked teams. No team left South Bend without at least one loss, the champion Farm Tavern included.

NY Gremlins Sweep to Finals at ASA Major

August 2nd, 2009

NY Gremlins vs. The Farm in Finals

The NY Gremlins have made their mark on the 2009 season, sweeping through the winner’s bracket at the ASA Major tournament in South Bend, Indiana, and face The Farm Tavern in the finals for the National title.

The Gremlins are, in large part, last year’s ISC II NY Knights, entering the ASA event as the # 13 ranked team in the ISC World rankings. In the ASA Major event this weekend, they have knocked off three higher ranked opponents (# 4 Midwest Stampede, #5 ranked Farm Tavern and #12 ranked Pueblo Bandits). For anyone wondering if the club was ready to step up from the ISC II ranks to the ISC World tournament later this month, I think it’s fair to say the Gremlins appear ready for prime time.

The Gremlins dispatched ISC # 5 ranked Farm Tavern from Madison, Wisconsin to the loser’s bracket, with a 5-2 win, no small feat. They then advanced to the winners bracket final where they shut-out ISC # 4 ranked Midwest Stampede.

Meanwhile, after suffering the first round upset, the Farm Tavern proceeded to take it out on its next eight opponents, winning four games on Friday and four more on Saturday, to get back to the finals against the team that sent them to the lower bracket.

The Gremlins pitching staff, with the key addition this year of Brian Newton, has surrendered only two runs in its four wins, with both of those scored by the Farm in the opening round game, followed by three consecutive shutout innings.

In the opening round win over The Farm, it was Newton picking up the win, a 4 hitter with 10 strikeouts. Big John Rozitch provided the margin of victory, with a home run and single for three RBI. Gremlin Edwardo Leonardo added an insurance run with a home run for the Gremlins, while Zenon Winters added a home run for the Farm.

Gremlin Bill Hillhouse followed that big win with a perfect game win over Dolan & Murphy.

The Gremlins run to the finals:

Gremlins 5, The Farm 2 (WP-Bryan Newton, 4 hits, 10 K’s)
Gremlins 7, Dolan & Murphy 0 (WP-Bill Hillhouse, PERFECT GAME, 10 K’s)
Gremlins 1, Pueblo Bandits 0 (WP-Bryan Newton, 2 hits, 15 K’s)
Gremlins 4, Midwest Stampede 0 (WP-Bryan Newton, 4 hits, 9 K’s)

Championship game set to go, 9am Sunday August 2, 2009.

Editor’s note: For those of you who are heading over to the ISC World Tournament bracket to see who the NY Gremlins open up against in that tournament, I’ll save you the trouble. It’s 18th ranked Owen Sound of Ontario, Canada. If they can get past Owen Sound in the first round? It would be the # 4 ranked Midwest Stampede, who they beat in the ASA Major winner’s bracket semi-final. (Midwest earning a first round bye by virtue of their Top 8-in-the-rankings status)

Kudos to the City of South Bend, Indiana Parks and Recreation department, for preparing and posting details of the games. ASA is not exactly famous for providing timely information on its National tournaments, so this is a pleasant discovery.

Salinas player headed to men’s softball tournament

July 31st, 2009

BY RYAN WALLACE
wallacer@thecalifornian.com

Last summer, it was a Salinas woman competing on softball’s biggest stage the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.

This summer, it’s a Salinas man taking part in North America’s largest fastpitch softball tournament.

While 39-year-old Ron Guzman doesn’t hold the distinction of being one of the world’s fastest softball pitchers like Monica Abbott does, he does carry that same passion for the sport.

For the past 16 years, Guzman has taken long weekend trips around the state and country to play competitive softball.

“It takes a lot out of you,” he said.

But playing in tournaments such as the International Softball Congress Men’s Fastball Tournament, Aug. 14-22, in Moline, Ill., makes it all worthwhile, he said.

Guzman and the Taylor Farms California Athletics are one of 24 teams to qualify for the ISC tournament.

The tournament includes players from across the United States, Canada, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, Czech Republic, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Denmark and the Philippines will be competing. More than 1,200 players and 4,000 fans daily are expected to take part in the event.

Guzman, who works for Taylor Farms, said the company has been the majority sponsor of the men’s fastpitch softball team since 2001.

Guzman said three-fourths of the team used to consist of players from Salinas. But after winning a national championship in 2002, the tournaments got tougher and a new caliber of players was needed.

The 2009 Taylor Farms team is primarily made up of Northern and Central California players ranging in age from 22 to 39. Some of those players came over after other softball organizations folded. Guzman, the team’s manager and first baseman, said about half of this year’s roster helped Taylor Farms win the ISC World Tournament of Champions in Appleton, Wisc., last year. That win automatically qualified the team for this year’s world tournament.

Taylor Farms opens the tournament on Aug. 15 against the Midland Explorers of Midland, Mich.
