Another big match-up this evening, following the one with Canada (3-0) vs. Australia (2-1) is the nightcap between Team USA (1-1) and Japan (2-0). The two teams have been mentioned as among those projected to be in the hunt for two of the four playoff spots.

The top two spots earn “double life” status in the playoff round, meaning they could lose a game and still remain alive. (Reigning world champions, the New Zealand Black Sox already beat the USA, and is favored in Pool A)

Game time, 6:30 p.m. Saskatoon time.

Al Doran, of Al’s Fastball, who is on the scene in Saskatoon, had this to say about the game between Japan and the USA:

“At 6:30 pm, the two top challengers to New Zealand in Pool A play, Japan and the U.S.A. Although the Japanese are undefeated and yet to play the Black Sox this may be a matchup for second place in the pool as both these team are legitimate medal contenders.”

Philippines Nip Brits in world softball tiff

July 19th, 2009

From the Philippine Star:

Blu Boys nip Brits in world softball tiff
The Philippine Star | 07/19/2009 8:29 AM

SASKATOON, Canada – The Philippines erupted for all of its runs in the fourth inning in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Great Britain on the opening day of the XII International Softball Federation men’s world championship Friday at the Bob Van Impe Stadium inside the Godon Howe Park here.

Down 1-0 after three completed innings, the Blu Boys went to work in decisive fourth period, bombarding losing pitcher James Arby with four hits, including a pair of perfectly executed sacrifice bunts.

The first of such surprise plays, coming from a signal from coach Zacky Bacarisas to Jasper Cabrera, put two Filipinos on first and second, including Orlando Binarao who earlier singled.

Arby then filled the bags after yielding a single to Manolito Binarao, Orlando’s younger brother, in the next play, paving the way for an Oscar Bradshaw double – a line drive that sailed over the head of the British shortstop and sending all three Filipino runners scampering across the plate.

Another sacrifice play, this time, coming from Isidro Abello, saw Bradshaw following Orlando Binarao, Cabrera and Manolito Binarao home. Bradshaw earlier advanced to third on a passed ball.

“Alam ako hindi nila inaasahan yung sacrifice plays, kasi maaga pa naman. Kaya lang kailangan nating umiskor at maaring madagdagan pa ang runs nila,” Bacarisas later said of his ploys.

Sensing the victory up under their sleeves, fastball throwing Rogelio Rojas then starved the Englishmen from there on in taking his first victory although coach Bacarisas’ boys needed a defensive hereoics from Apol Rosales at the bottom of the seventh and final frame.

With two runners on, the last coming when a fielded ball hit Rosales’ foot, the RP third baseman quickly recovered the leather and caught the speeding runner on second, ending the tight contest to the delight of a sizeable Filipinos crowd in the gallery.

Amateur Softball Association-Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier congratulated the boys from a job well done in a telephone call from Manila.

“Congratulations, keep up the good work. You just showed the world what kind of softball we play in the Philippines and what kind of player we are. Continue doing honors for the country, “ Lhuiller said in a message relayed through delegation head Kiko Diaz.

The Philippines plays Mexico next on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) before meeting defending champion New Zealand Sunday, former winner the United States Monday, Japan Tuesday, Botswana Wednesday and Denmark Thursday in Pool A elimination play.

Men’s softball eager to join Olympic lineup

Softball Canada president Kevin Quinn has a 2020 vision.

By that year, he hopes to see his sport being contested in the Olympics by both men’s and women’s teams.

“It’s very, very important for our sport to get back into the Olympic program because it affects our funding and it affects the development of the sport overall,” Quinn said Friday as the men’s softball world championship opened in Saskatoon. “The Olympics are such a carrot for young athletes to get into the sport and continue in the sport.”

When London plays host to the 2012 Summer Games, women’s softball and men’s baseball won’t be on the program. International Olympic Committee (IOC) members voted to remove those sports during a vote in Singapore four years ago.

Softball is one of seven sports — along with baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, rugby and squash — being considered for inclusion in the 2016 Games. IOC executive members are slated to announce the successful candidates next month, but their decision still has to be ratified during the IOC general assembly in Copenhagen, Denmark, in October.

Canadian Olympic Committee president Mike Chambers said the international softball fraternity has properly argued its case.

“Certainly the COC and myself would be pleased if softball is one of the two sports chosen,” said Chambers, who participated in Friday’s opening ceremonies at Bob Van Impe Stadium. “There are other worthy sports as well, but (softball) would assist the Games in more than one way, including bringing more women to the Olympic Games.”

If women’s softball is reintroduced for the 2016 Games, the International Softball Federation “would be working very, very hard to get the men in the next time (for 2020),” said Quinn.
