Argentina Ties for Third at Legends Tournament

June 7th, 2009

Our friend in Argentina has posted a story from Team Argentina on his blog, “SoftballNewsLA” (LA as in Latin America, not Los Angele)s.

The (rough) Google translation is below. Not perfect, but enough to get the gist of it, and the stats are universal.

La Selección Argentina tercera en el Legends of Fastball
(In English, Team Argentina Third in Legends of Fastball)

La Selección Argentina Softball Men finished in third position in the Legends of Fastball Tournamen, who opened the tournament tour of our national team is doing by United States and Canada. On this day, the choice over Argentina in the first instance to Dundas CPI-ADS by 5 to 4 in the ninth episode, but was unable to Jarvis Gamblers in the semifinal game, losing 8 to 7 in the eighth and finishing their participation in this competition. The champion of the Legends of Fastball was Kitchener Rivershark Twins, who beat Jarvis in the final by 4 to 1.

In the first game of the day, Argentina faced Dundas CPI-ADS, the team that had already passed in the round robin. However, the game is presented very evenly, that will have 9 innings to determine the winner. Argentina was ahead in the score 1 to 0 in the closure of the second period. However, CPI-Dundas ADS respond at the top of the fourth with three runs on Gervasutti Sebastian (3.2 IP, 3R, 3ER, 5H, 6K, 0BB), Edgardo Solis forcing the bowler to dismiss opener by Maxi Montero, who made a great outlet and eventually would be elected the most valuable player of the match. La Selección Argentina meet in the closure of the fifth with two glimmer to tie the game and those are all records of the seven periods. After the eighth inning passed without news on the scoreboard, the game defined in the ninth. CPI-Dundas opened the inning with ADS a career, but Argentina scored 2 in the closure of the same episode, leaving the field to his rival, ranking in this way to the semifinals of the competition. For Argentina, the most outstanding offensive came at the bats of three July Gamarci with a career booster, and Gustavo Guerrinieri with two singles.

This victory gave our team go to the national semifinal, where he hoped Jarvis Gamblers, team that had won last night to Argentina for 6 to 3 in the opening playoff. And again the Gamblers exceed our selection, this time in the eighth episode, resulting in 8 to 7, leaving Argentina without the final of the tournament and in third position. The game remained 1 to 1 until the opening of sex, when a whole stick back Gustavo Guerrinieri brought to plate 2 runs and put the advantage to Argentina. However, Jarvis answer period at the close of that glimmer with three, going to the front 4 to 3. However, the team Albiceleste equal shares at the opening of the seventh and require a extrainning. And the opening of the eighth would be very favorable for the South Americans, who stepped on the plate three times and headed the party in his favor. But a rival team’s comeback at the close of the eighth prevented him from Argentina to the final ranking, getting four runs (the latter driven by Ryan Thompson) and losing the game by the minimum.

Since the circle worked Guerrinieri Jose (5.2 IP, 3R, 3ER, 2H, 7K, 3BB), Juan Potolicchio (1 IP, 1R, 1ER, 2H, 1K, 2BB) and Francisco Sabate (1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H) while the offensive side stressed Gustavo Guerrinieri (HR, 2 runs), Fernando Petric (2 singles) and Gustavo Godoy (Gustavo Godoy, within the home run, 2 singles, 3 RBI’s).

In this way, spent the first weekend of the tour of Argentina in North America, with a total of 3 wins and an equal number of defeats.

Fastball Legends Honoured in Kitchener

June 7th, 2009

From our friend John Thompson (Editor of “Diamond Dirt”) in Kitchener:

Fastball Legends Dan Yantzi and Bill Horne Honoured in Kitchener

Two fastball pitchers of renown were recognized at the annual Legends Fastball Tournament in Kitchener.

Dan Yantzi, originally from Tavistock and now a resident of Waterloo, a two-time (1991 and 1993) All-World pitcher at the ISC Championships, and the first Canadian pitcher inducted into the International Softball Congress Hall of Fame, played for the “love of the game” at the senior level from 1978 (Kitchener Evergreens) and closed out his career with the Waterloo Twins (1988-95).

Bill Horne of St. Thomas commenced his senior playing career in Port Stanley, and was a dominant pitcher in the 1970s with the St. Thomas Durston Pools team, sporting an impressive 65-10 win-loss record in 1974 and a league batting crown in 1976. Bill currently manages the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials and is chair of the host committee for the 2009 Canadians scheduled for the last week of August in St. Thomas.

Congratulations Bill and Dan.
