2009 ISC II ToC

December 11th, 2008

While most of us are getting ready for Christmas, the planning for next season never stops at the ISC.

We are pleased to announce that the 2009 ISC II Tournament of Champions will be expanded to 40 teams and will be played at the Campbell Sports Complex in Rock Island, Illinois, part of the Quad Cities on the Iowa-Illinois border.

The ToC will start on Tuesday August 18 with the Championship Game scheduled for Saturday August 22. All teams will be guaranteed a minimum of four games.

In the very near future, we will be announcing the list of qualifiers in each region. You will need to play in a qualifier in order to be eligible to compete in the ToC.

If you have any questions about competing in ISC II or qualifying for the ToC, please don’t hesitate to contact ISC II VP Jim Williamsonm, ISC II Commissioner Blair Setford, or your regional ISC VP. You can also contact an ISC Regional Commissioner in your area.

2009 I-S-F World Men’s Fastpitch Gives Update, Gets Money

It wasn’t fastpitch weather Tuesday in Saskatoon, but the local organizing committee for the 2009 International Softball Federation’s World Men’s Fastpitch Championship was warmed up by a $100,000 commitment from the provincial government. The committee also announced that tickets for the July 17-26 event go on sale Monday [Dec. 15] through Ticketmaster. Early bird purchasers get a reserved seat and parking spot at the Bob Van Impe and Gordie Howe Park complex. Sixteen countries, including Canada, will take part. Three Saskatoonians, infielder Keith Mackintosh and pitchers Dean Holoein and Trevor Ethier are on the Canadian squad. The local committee also launched their official website at today’s news conference…2009worldmensfastpitch.com. The site will have all the latest news on the event as well as information for those people who would like to help out as volunteers.

Carl Hansen Tournament – Salt Lake City, UT

December 9th, 2008

Carl Hansen (Page Brake) Men’s Fastpitch Tournament

July 11 & 12, 2009 – Cottonwood Complex – Salt Lake City, UT
Entry fee: $375 – entry deadline June 26, 2009
Contact to register on-line: Salt Lake County Parks & Red www.slcorecsports.com
Tournament Director: Les Vaughan lavaughan@platt.com
UIC: To be named later
Format: 4-game guarantee

Editor’s note: The 1992 ISC World Tournament was hosted at the Cottonwood Complex, as well as a long string of Pioneer Days Tournaments, into the early 1990’s. The latter was considered the premier tournament in the “West” for many years, thanks to the work of current ISC Executive Director Ken Hackmeister.

Carl Hansen, for whom this tournament is named is the longtime sponsor of Page Brake, which was the arch rival of their Salt Lake City counterpart, Larry Miller Toyota, in the days when two giants (literally) of the mound would square off, Page Brake’s Neil Chadwick, and Larry Miller’s Peter Meredith.

Great to see SLC back on the radar.

Upstarts’ revenge served with cold cash

Andrew Kirkpatrick and Jeff Goolagong Lead the Way

From the Canberra Times:

BY KYLE MACKEY-LAWS

[Canberra, Australia] – Upstarts won the final of Australia’s most expensive skins softball tournament yesterday, with a 5-1 win over the defending champion, the Gators. It was the fifth consecutive year the Canberra sides had played off in the final of the $20,000 tournament.

Upstarts qualified for the match with the highest earnings during the round matches, with more than $4000 claimed, while Gators had a closer battle to scrape through to the decider at Hawker.

The side finished the rounds with $1150 worth of skins, while third-placed Perth won $1125.

Skins are cash prizes awarded for winning an individual inning, with a bonus for winning the match.

Fastpitch Softball League President Geoff Tutt said it was a fitting end to a fantastic event the longest running men’s tournament in Australia.

Both sides were locked at 1-all during the final before Upstarts won a $1000 skin in the fifth inning and secured the victory.

Tutt said it was no surprise the final was between two Canberra teams.

”It’s the biggest tournament in Australia, and the ACT is the strongest state in the country we’ve got 11 players in the tournament who are in the Australian open team,” he said. ”It’s always very close when you play skins it’s about the dollars, you don’t necessarily have to win the match it’s all about the jackpot and winning the game dollar wise.”

Tutt said Upstarts pitcher Andrew Kirkpatrick dominated the tournament.

”He’s the world No1, and he pitched the final very well and hit the ball strong. Jeff Goolagong also played really well, he batted well and is probably the second best batter in Australia behind Andrew.”

Fourteen teams contested this year’s event, with entries from Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and New Zealand.

Tutt said he was already looking towards next year, and believed more international entries would come.

”We had a couple of international teams two from Singapore and one from Malaysia who pulled out prior to the tournament, and I’m confident they’ll play next year.”

High Quality Video on YouTube

December 3rd, 2008

As you have probably noticed, we’ve been posting more videos of late, to the “Fastpitchwest Channel” at YouTube. We plan to post a lot more during the 2009 season, including some from the AAU International tournament in January.

YouTube, as many of you know, is owned by Google, and is the leading site for display of videos. The quality of the video is fair at best, but it’s become popular because the site is easy to use and allows you to upload any and all video formats, without worry as to whether it will play on someone else’s computer, a sort of universal video converter that everyone can use and watch. The good news is that the Google boys have upgrading their system to permit you to view the videos in “high quality”. The difference is dramatic. (900 kbps vs. 200 kbps for you techies).

To watch in high quality mode, simply start the little movie displayed in the blog, then click the “YouTube” logo on the lower right had side of the screen. That will take you to a wide screen, high quality version of the video.

Please note:

I have the defaults at the Fastpitchwest Channel at YouTube set to “high quality”. If you are on a dial up or slow connection, after you click the YouTube logo on the blog post video, look for the link underneath the wide screen video that says “view in normal quality”.

Click here to watch a Fastpitchwest video in high quality.

Click the YouTube logo above to visit the “Fastpitchwest Channel” at YouTube, and see all available videos.

For those so inclined, you can “subscribe” to the Fastpitchwest Channel, and get updated whenever we post a new video. You can also “Add to Google”, if you use iGoogle homepage, and the latest video will display inside a little widget on the page.
