The annual AAU Tournament at the Disney Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida is expanding the field to 36 teams for the 2009 edition. The tournament will be played January 22 – 25, 2009. The tournament began in 2000 with 8 teams. 8 grew to 16, then 24, 28, and 32 for the past several years.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, recently announced the 34 athletes invited to attend the September 25-28 selection camp for the 2009 USA Softball Men’s National Team.
The athletes will take part in a three-day camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. in order to be selected to the 17-member 2009 Men’s National Team. The 2009 team will compete in a series of events leading up to and including the ISF World Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan July 17-26, 2009.
“We have a mixture of proven veterans and first timers and young talent in this group,†said head coach Peter Turner (Stockton, Calif.). “I think our young talent will push the veterans and we will be able to fill our roster with the right combination to continue moving forward. I think the international experience some of the younger players received over this past summer will go a long way for us.â€

At the recent ISC Board of Directors meeting in Kimberly, the body approved naming a South American Player Rep. This new position replaces the former At-Large Player Rep position held by Michael White. With Michael retired from the game, he is no longer eligible to be a Player Rep.
We thank Michael’s years of service as an ISC Player Rep where he served professionally and productively. It was Michael’s concept that led to the approval of the ISC’s PRAWN program.
Michael committed his continued service to the ISC if and when his input and talents are needed. He was very gracious about the change.
Juan Potolicchio, a 26 year old pitcher from Argentina has been named to the new position of South American Player Rep. With the increasing number of South American’s coming to the US and Canada to play ISC ball, it was felt they deserved a formal voice on the ISC Player Rep Committee.
Juan has been playing fastball since age 14. He is single and is currently studying Industrial Engineering and working in Industrial Resource Safety. He has been playing in North America for the past 5-years, most recently with Dolan & Murphy of Aurora, IL.
He is a highly intelligent person as evidenced by his Mensa membership. He reads, writes and speaks fluent English.

Howdy Fastballers,
It’s nearing time for the Fastpitch September Classic to be held at Les Eva Field on September 27th and 28th. I would like to invite teams of all levels to come play in this wrap up of the 2008 season. We usually end up with mostly “C” teams but again I would love to raise the bar a bit and encourage “B” teams to come also. The entry fee is $350.00. Checks will not be excepted after Sunday the 21st of September. The cash deadline will be Tuesday September 23rd. your game times will be sent out on Wednesday evening. The format is negotiable. Please e-mail back or call if you are interested in playing and at that time please let me know if you would like round robin on sat. and then single elimination on Sunday or if you would like to do a double elimination.
All proceeds will go directly to our local Grass Valley league and a portion of the proceeds may go to benefit a certain 40 year veteran of the Grass Valley fastpitch that is having health problems and is having a hard time paying for much needed medication. Before I divulge this persons identity I need to talk to him directly and make sure it’s ok put his name out there as he is a very proud man and may not want the added attention. This man has played and been a spectator for so long that he is a part of the field and our league. It would be a great if we could help him out in his time of need. Money aside, this is always a very fun and competitive tournament. It’s not Grass Valley Nationals but it is the last chance to win a four foot trophy this year. 2008 was another very successful year for fastpitch here in Grass Valley and in CA in general. We added two more new teams to our league and plan to add two more next year witch would bring our league to 12 mens teams. Not too bad for little old G.V. The uniforms and the breakaway bases that were purchased with money raised from previous tourneys have been a gr eat success not to mention the King and His Court show last year was a blast. These are the things that peak interest in our sport and lure younger players to try it, so lets keep it going guys!!! Please call or e-mail ASAP if you plan to bring a team. The official Final Order of Finish for the 2008 ISC II Tournament of Champions was released at the ISC website today. (see below)
All three California teams finished in the Top 10, with the Bakersfield Lumberkings coming away with the championship trophy in this highly competititive event.
The 2008 ISC II marked the third trip to the ISC II Tournament of Champions for the Lumberkings, who improved in three consecutive years. In 2006, they became the first California team ever to compete in the event, qualfying for the playoff round, and winning their first round game before elimination. In 2007, the Lumberkings were the runners-up, falling to TNT of South Lebanon, Pennsylvania in the finals, after eliminating another California team, A-1 Taylor Farms in extra innings in the semi-finals. This year, they reached the top of the mountain, combining forces with many of the A-1 Taylor Farms players.
2008 was the first time that the River City Rockers of Sacramento, California and Rude Pac of Sun Valley competed in the tournament, with both clubs finishing in the top 10 and coming away with winning records.
California teams were a combined 15-5 in this year’s T of C.

If you were at the 2008 ISC II Tournament of Champions, you doubtless saw Maddy Flanagan and her camera. Maddy does an absolutely phenomenal job taking photos and we were lucky to have her as the official ISC II photographer this year.
Having taken thousands of photos in just four days, Maddy has been busy combing through the raw photography to find the best of the best. They are now posted at her remodeled web site Maddy’s Photos.

Editor’s notes: The new site permits players and fans to purchase any photo they wish online, in automated, shopping cart fashion. Hope this streamlines the process of getting the photos you want. As you can imagine, it was difficult for Maddy to keep up with the volume of email requests. Watch for uploaded galleries from past tournaments, which we will also announce here at the Morning Brief.
For those of you unaccustomed to seeing Maddy’s Photos for sale, she was hired as the “official photographer” for the ISC II this year, after the first fellow opted out. She was not paid for her services, but invited to post and sell the photos in the same fashion as the other photographers at the tournaments who have done so in the past. She has tried to scale the prices down a bit from what others have. I am obviously biased, but I happen to think the quality of hers is much higher than some other tournament photographers. Given the cost of equipment, including rentals, not to mention travel costs, it’s not a money making proposition. (That big lens she lugged around this year was $365 to rent for the tournament). And you don’t want to know about the other gear. She is out there taking photos because she loves the game and the people involved in it, which I think shows in the photos you see. Anyway, hope you understand, and maybe order a photo or two.
About the only thing that the new site does not do is handle volume discounting. If you are a manager and wish to a quantity (e.g. 10 or more) photos for the guys, use the “Contact Us” link at the site to write to Maddy about quantity discounts.
