Special Olympics at ISC – Reminder

July 30th, 2008

Just a reminder about the ISC/Special Olympics game that will be held this year. To date, I’ve heard from the following teams/groups about being part of this event.

The Bar of Appleton – Chad Mix
Thomson Merchants – Bruce Bielema
Fastpitch West – Jim and Maddy Flanagan
The Bar of Green Bay – Ric Thompson
Midland Explorers – Grant Patterson
Circle Tap – Tom Crouch
Scarborough Wolverines – Ryan Freedman
SoCal Bombers – Tony Peeples

Please email me if your team can send someone. We’d like to have as much representation as possible from the all the ISC teams.

Date: Thursday, August 14th

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Location: Diamond 1, Sunset Park

The Blazing Stars, a Fox Valley Special Olympics team, will have about 12-15 players, and once we get the final lists, we’ll split the 2 groups up evenly so that the Special Olympics and WT players get to be teammates. Once the teams are set, we’ll play a 1-hour slowpitch game between the two teams.

The game can accomodate as many players/teams as there is interest – no one gets turned away if they want to be part of it.

2008 Farm/NAFA World Series Wrap-up

July 30th, 2008

2008 Farm/NAFA World Series Wrap-up
July 29, 2008
Middleton, WI

This is Executive Director Benjie Hedgecock with a wrap-up on the 2008 NAFA Open World Series sponsored by The Farm which was held the last weekend in July at the Bowling Green Softball Complex in Middleton (near Madison) Wisconsin.

Patsy’s (7-1 overall) played 4 games on Sunday to win the title over the Casa Trejo Bombers(4-1) in the final. Patsy’s entered the Championship game on a bottom of the seventh game-ending home run over the Midwest Stampede (2007 NAFA AAA World Champions) who took 3rd place with a 3-2 record.

Rounding out the top six teams, MinnDak Millers of (2005 NAFA Open World Champions) took 4th place with a 3-2 record. The Farm (2-2, 2007 NAFA Open Champions) and Circle Tap (2-2, 2006 NAFA Open Co-Champions) tied for 5th place.

The remainder of the field finished in the following order; Townline (2006 NAFA Open Co-Champions) tied for 7th place with IAC/Team Rainey both with 2-2 records. New Image (4-2, 2007 AA-Major Champions) tied for 9th with Herda & Sons (2-3, NAFA AA team). Two AA-Major teams playing up finished tied for 11th, Wilber Lime (NAFA 2004 AA Champion) and Kegel Black Knights (2007 AA-Major Runner-Up) both with 2-2 records. At 13th was Dolan & Murphy (1-2) and at 14th was Quad City Sox. Bar of Green Bay finished 15th at (1-2). Thomson Area Merchants, Bar of Appleton and Stoneyard all tied for 16th.

Just 9 of the 39 games played were settled by the run rule, and two of those were after the 5th inning. 22 of the remaining 30 games were within 1 to 3 run differences. There was not one ejection or one single incident between teams. A true testament to the players and umpires choosing to treat each other right. A big thank you to all the players, coaches and spectators for displaying great sportsmanship at this event. The All World Team is listed below as well as the umpires who officiated this event.

I would like to thank the tournament staff; Tournament Director and NAFA Vice- President Robert Hernandez from Southern California for being the on-site and overseeing the operation there from Friday morning until Sunday night. Thank you to Umpire-In-Chief Carley Parish from Eastern Canada for overseeing the officials and selecting the officials for this most prestigious of events. I have already had emails from coaches saying that it was one of the best officiated Open events of the year. Vice-President Loren Lathrop for selecting and overseeing the scorekeepers and handling the coin flips. Vice-President Mike Watson for managing the bracket board and game controlling. NAFA Statistician Tony Schaaf for providing Box scores, statistics and info for All World Tournament Selections.

A very special thanks to Terry Knight, Bowling Green Sports Complex Manager and his staff for providing field preparation prior to each game, for staffing the gate and providing concessions at the park and across the street at the bowling alley restaurant. Thanks to Al Doran and Jim Flanagan for posting website updates when we could get them to them.

Vancouver Challenge Recap

(click logo to visit official Vancouver Grey Sox website)

Vancouver, BC

The 7th Annual edition of the Vancouver Challenge Mens FP tournament concluded this past Sunday afternoon, with the host Grey Sox defeating the Pueblo, CO Bandits in the final game by a score of 4 – 0. This year’s tournament proved to be another success. Over the course of 3 days the consistent large crowds of fastpitch enthusiasts were treated to some high quality team and individual performances. Mother nature also cooperated throughout the event with seasonable summer temperatures at South Memorial Park, and despite a forecast for rain on Sunday, weather was a non factor throughout the weekend.

The final order of finish was as follows: Champions – Vancouver Grey Sox, Runner Up – Pueblo, CO Bandits, 3rd – Bakersfield, CA Taylor Farms Lumberkings, 4th -Horse Lake, AB Thunder 5th -Camrose, AB Fury, 6th – Vancouver South Hill Giants, 7th – Vernon, BC DC Arrows, 8th – Portland, OR DeMarini.

Individual game scores with details have been posted via Al’s site and are also contained with our team website.

As well with the victory the Grey Sox have qualified for the 2009 ISC World Tournament in Quad Cities, set for August 14 – 23, 2009.

Individual Tournament Awards
Top Hitter – Scott Galenza, Camrose Fury, 10/12, .883, 5RBIs
Top Pitcher – Max Montero, Pueblo Bandits, 2W/1L, 19IP, 31Ks, 1.84ERA
MVP – Brian Ree, Vancouver Grey Sox, 8/14, .571, 2 HRs, 6RBIs

Tournament Highlights:

* A very committed and dedicated volunteer group who worked long hours to execute the event. To the many people who staffed the gate, concession area, beverage gardens, groomed the fields etc. sold 50 /50 tickets and did everything possible to make the event happen we extend a special thanks. Also kudos to George Morneau (father of Justin Morneau – Minnesota Twins) who once again went out of his way to assist the event in any way possible including personally selling 50/50 tickets.

* Once again very large crowds on each day, reminding us what makes being at the ball park so special on a nice summer’s day.

* A good balanced field of teams, who for the most part were evenly matched and used the event as a final tune up prior to the ASA, ISC World Tournament and the Softball Canada Senior Mens FP Nationals.

* An excellent and cooperative crew of umpires whose commitment to the sport was so evident and very much appreciated. Led by tournament UIC -Bob Henning, who successfully assembled and coordinated a very experienced, skilled crew of umpires from many parts of North America and the World. The tournament umpiring crew consisted of the following; Bob Henning (Surrey, BC), John Ribalkin (North Vancouver, BC), Michael Track (Richmond, BC), Tim Lederman (Coquitlam, BC), John Irvine (Edmonton, AB), Rick Leche (Cloverdale, BC), Frankie Billingsley (Edmonton, AB), Al Strang (Richmond, BC), Ricco Powers (Victoria, BC), Don Martin (Coquitlam, BC), Ron Brinkman (Appelton, WI), Greg Pohl (St. Louis, MO), Dan Young (Surrey, BC), Kevin Wallace (Shipman, IL) and Patricia Hamamato (Sao Palo, Brazil)

* A very fitting and appropriate ceremony to recognize Tom “The Colonel” Yipp, a dedicated and long serving individual who has given freely of his time and efforts for the betterment of the game in the Lower Mainland of BC.

* A talented crew of statiscians and scorekeepers who maintained the game records and shared them with the softball world in an expeditious manner via the tournament website and Al’s Fastball List and Fastpitchwest.

* Sincere thanks to our partners South Hill Sports Association for co – operating the event. As well of course to our participating teams, 5 of which were first time visitors to the Vancouver Challenge. Special acknowledement to the Pueblo Bandits, California Lumberkings, Vernon Arrows, Camrose Fury and the Vancouver South Hill Giants for their first time participation. As well thanks to Portland DeMarini and the Horse Lake Thunder for continuing our ongoing partnership by returning to Vancouver and playing in this event.

The 8th Annual Edition of the Vancouver Challenge will proceed in 2009, but will require a change from its traditional date of the last weekend in July, due to the 2009 ISF Mens World Championship being conducted in Saskatoon, SK from July 17 – 26. Watch for a more formal announcement to come from us in the weeks ahead confirming the weekend chosen for the 2009 Vancouver Challenge.
